Habitat Build! While we have had a very sad few weeks

in the parish, I am excited to tell you that

there are good things happening, also.

Our Habitat coalion of churches

(Harvest Home) was approached by a

Lutheran charitable group called Thrivent

with an offer to make a significant contribuon to our next

house. With the funds that we had on hand from our

UNO’s days, pie sales and other fundraisers, this offer gives

us the funds to pay for a new house build this year! We

expect to break ground on our next house someme in late

July. We will need your support to help us work on building

this house during August and the fall months. This is a

chance to support those in need in our community as Pope

Francis regularly calls us to do.!

Our house will be built on a lot at 179185 Whitney St. This

is in the same city neighborhood as the last house that we

built. Habitat has built a number of homes in this neighbor-

hood, called the Josana Neighborhood, which is located be-

tween Lyell Ave and Jay St. !

It was a great experience for me to work on the last house,

even though I am not highly skilled with my hands. You will

likely come home very red a6er a day’s work there, but

you will be very sasfied that you helped someone experi-

ence the joy of owning their own home. Studies have

found that children who live in their own home perform

be8er in school, and parents who parcipate in building

their own home, which is required by Habitat, are much

more likely to care for it and become good neighbors. Habi-

tat also provides training to prospecve homeowners to

help them learn to manage their finances so that they can

pay their mortgage to Habitat.!

The property consists of two plots of land that have been

combined, and there will be a gardenlike corner as a me-

morial to Tyshaun Lamar Cauldwell, who died this spring.

The Homebuyer is a single woman, Mary Su8on, 57, who

works for Acon for A Be8er Community. Mary had at one

me received services from ABC and now works in their

Program for troubled kids. !

I hope to schedule at least two parish workdays on week-

ends in August and September. Habitat has an online sig-

nup, so that anyone over 18 can sign themselves up to work

on any house under construcon at any me. I encourage

you to do this. However, I plan to arrange days when we as

a parish can work together on the house. Watch the bulle-

n for more informaon. No construcon experience is

required, just your energy and goodwill. !

Thank you for all that you do for the parish!!!!

Deacon Bob Lyons!

ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE!

Today's Gospel offers a rare framework

a story in a story. Most of the healing

miracles are standalone encounters.

One person approaches Jesus, demon-

strates faith, and is healed. The evan-

gelist tells the next story. This Gospel, however, is differ-

ent. Jesus is on his way to heal one person, a young girl of

twelve, and is interrupted on his journey by "a woman

afflicted with hemorrhages." She bravely approaches Jesus

in a crowd, despite being ritually unclean from her bleed-

ing, and stretches out to touch his cloak. She is healed!

Jesus meets her eye, confirms her faith, and connues on

to resurrect the young girl. !

Reading this passage, it might be easier

to idenfy with one story the long

suffering woman or the young, inno-

cent girl and to move past the other.

But here they sit side by side. The girl

is twelve. The woman has been suffering for twelve years.

For the Gospel writers, number parallels have deep sym-

bolic meaning.!

Between the woman and the young girl, we are not one or

the other. We are both. None of us had a perfect child-

hood, perfect families, or a perfect peer group. As we en-

dure pain, disappointment, or unmet expectaons, it can

feel like a part of our childhood hopes have died. Our cop-

ing mechanisms, social adaptaons, and hidden secrets can

make us the "walking wounded" in some respects. Jesus

wants to do more than simply staunch the bleeding. His

healing hand makes dead things come alive. He awakens

the dreams that are asleep. This process requires prayer,

conversaons with trusted community and spiritual men-

tors, and crical looks at difficult areas of our life. Howev-

er, we can believe the words of our Lord. If we approach

Jesus in faith, believing that he wants to heal and save, we,

too, will hear his calming words spoken over the hurts of

our life. "I say to you, arise!" Go in peace. !
