Background

This training is meant to help you become a safe and effective member of a HABET Recovery Team operating out of the Clyde Williams Field Primary Launch Site. It is also valid for any other launch site.

The Recovery Team’s primary job is the recovery of the spacecraft after landing. It’s secondary concern is reception of data from the spacecraft before launch, during actual flight, and after landing. The Recovery Team must also collect pinhole video and track the spacecraft during the flight.

The Recovery team must begin operations prior to the MRR to ensure the recovery vehicle is fully prepared for the flight.

Although most recovery procedures do not take long to complete, it is important that they are completed before the various steps in the flight timeline to ensure that all systems may be checked for proper operation.

The Recovery Director will direct you to follow certain procedures at certain times.

However, if you notice that a procedure has been missed, or think that something is wrong in any way, it is your responsibility to point this out to the Recovery Director.

Only trained members of the Recovery Team are permitted to operate any of the Recovery Team equipment while a flight is in progress. However, observers may ride in the recovery vehicle. It is YOUR responsibility to ensure that only authorized personnel operate the equipment.

Recovery Team Procedures begin prior to the MRR with the MRR Checklist.

By following all of the Recovery Checklists, the Recovery Director ensures that all procedures required to prepare the Recovery Team for the flight are completed.

While it is the Recovery Director who will follow the checklists, as a member of the team you should be familiar with all of them so that you can be sure no procedures are missed, and so that you understand when and why procedures need to be completed.

The recommended start time indicates, where applicable, the time that this procedure should be started during a normal HABET mission. This time is measured from some fixed marker in the mission, such as FRR, MRR, or Launch.

Certain standard information can be found at the top of every Recovery Team Procedure.

The Master Timeline reference indicates, if applicable, where on the Mission Manager’s timeline this procedure should be carried out.

If there are rules associated with when or how the procedure should be carried out, they will be specified here.

HABETHABET Recovery Team Recovery Team Training Training Certain standard information can be found at the top of every Recovery Team Procedure.

Lastly, if the procedure is dangerous, there may be a warning or caution notice underneath the rules. For example, the Vehicle Setup Procedure may cause death if not followed correctly. Electrocution from power wires or Electromagnetic Radiation from the antennas on the rooftop of the recovery vehicle can cause serious personal injury.

MRR ChecklistThe MRR checklist specifies the procedures to be carried out before and during the MRR.

First, a recovery vehicle must be secured from Transportation Services. This must be done through the HABET Manager. To ensure the correct type of vehicle is available, this MUST be done several days in advance.

Also, a Recovery Team member must be authorized to be able to drive an ISU vehicle - this can take several weeks (this person is usually picked from a pool of approved people).

Second, the Recovery Team must check that all of the equipment on the Recovery Equipment Checklist is available for the mission.

Once a piece of equipment is known to be available, it should be checked off in the MRR column of this list.

Note: At this time, checking that the equipment is functional is not required since this would require a functional, operating spacecraft, which may not be available before the MRR. However, if a piece of equipment is clearly not functional it should be noted and brought to the attention of the RD and MMGR.

Ensure all batteries are charged before FRR.

Third, before the MRR, the RD must ensure that all required training for prospective Recovery Team members has been completed, or waivers obtained.

Note: If you have not completed the training satisfactorily, you will not be allowed to be a member of the Recovery Team without a waiver.

The Recovery Team is now ready to begin the Countdown Timeline and Flight operations sequence.

The Recovery Team will be responsible for monitoring all recovery gear in the chase vehicle to make sure that it is operating correctly and that telemetry and pinhole video is being captured during the fill sequence. This will continue until the actual launch of the balloon by the Launch Team.

Countdown Timeline

The countdown is started by the Flight Director immediately after the end of the FRR. The Recovery Director then begins working through the Countdown Timeline.

Recovery Team members will usually need to arrive at the SSOL 2½ before the planned launch time. However, the RD may choose to alter this under certain conditions.

Once the FRR has been completed and the Countdown started, the RD must ensure that everything will be ready for launch. This includes prepping the Chase vehicle systems (refer to Chase Vehicle Setup (pre-FRR) for details).

On flight day, the RD must determine what the approximate departure time after launch will be based on the initial landing zone (LZ) prediction from the Flight Team - this should be recorded on the Timeline

While the Launch and Flight teams are performing their pre-flight jobs, the Recovery team must also prepare the Chase vehicle and it’s equipment (refer to the Chase Vehicle Set-up (pre-Flight) Procedure). Once this is completed the completion time should be entered onto the Countdown Timeline on the appropriate line.

The Recovery Team MUST have this completed before the Launch team can start the Fill Procedure for filling the balloon.

Once the Launch Team is nearly ready for starting the Fill Procedure, they will ask the MMGR for approval to power the spacecraft on external power. At this time the MMGR will ask each of the Directors (via radio comm) for a “Go for External Power”. The Recovery Team must have all of it’s equipment on and functioning within normal parameters AND all team members must be ready as well.

Once the Roll Call has been completed and the spacecraft has started transmitting telemetry, the RD must verify reception in the Chase Vehicle and note the time.

When the Launch team is finally ready for fill - the LD will ask for approval from the MMGR. The MMGR will call “Roll Call: Go for Fill”. Each Director will state their teams’ readiness by giving a “Go” or a “No-Go”.

The RD will give a “Go” only if all equipment is functioning and the display on the laptop indicates that the spacecraft has GPS lock. Pinhole camera video should also be verified at this time

While the Fill is proceeding, the Recovery Team must continue to monitor equipment to ensure that everything is functioning normally.

One person on the team should monitor the telemetry display on the laptop. Another person should be operating the antenna for the pinhole video to ensure a good, clear picture is captured. Someone else can be marking which county maps will be needed based on the Flight Team’s predicted flight path.

When the Fill procedure is nearly complete, the RD must get an updated flight path prediction map with an updated landing zone (LZ) from the Flight Team. This will ensure the latest wind data was used for the prediction and provide a more accurate LZ location.

Once the Fill is complete, the LD will ask for approval to go to internal spacecraft power. At this time the MMGR will give a “Roll Call: Go for Internal Power” call.

When the MMGR asks for the “Go for internal Power”, all Recovery Team members should be in and around the Chase vehicle - this means that Launch and departure are a few moments away.

After the spacecraft has been switched to internal power, the RD must verify that the telemetry still indicates a GPS lock and that the spacecraft still seems to be operating within normal parameters. Once this has been done the time should be noted.

After the Launch Team has finished tying off the balloon and attaching the various tow lines and cables, the LD will ask the MMGR for approval to launch the balloon. The MMGR will then poll each Director to make a last check that all equipment and the spacecraft are operating properly.

For the Recovery Team this means all team members are near the Chase Vehicle and ready to go AND that all equipment is functioning AND the telemetry indicates a GPS lock. Once ALL of this has been verified - the RD will give a “Go for Launch” signal to the MMGR and note the time.

After the “Go for Launch” signal is given by the MMGR the LD is free to release the balloon at their discretion. This means that departure of the Recovery Team is moments away and everyone should be prepared for departure. The only person outside of the vehicle will be the person capturing pinhole video with the Yagi antenna. Once video signal has been lost, the RD will ask the MMGR for permission to depart for the initial LZ.

At this time the pinhole video capturing equipment should be powered down and stowed in the rear compartment of the chase vehicle. The handheld video camera should also be retrieved from the Launch Team so that the landing of the spacecraft can be recorded.

Once the Recovery team has departed, the ‘Recovery Operations’ procedure can be started.

Recovery Procedure

The Recovery Operations Procedure will begin at the Launch of the balloon.

The Recovery Team MUST maintain good safety practices and driving etiquette - it is representing HABET, the SSOL, the Iowa Space Grant Consortium, and ISU when in contact with the public. This includes other drivers on the highway and possibly farmers when actual recovery of the spacecraft is done.

It is important for all team members to be aware that serious injury can occur from unsafe compliance with this procedure.

Always keep hands away from electrical connections - electrocution is possible.

Also, the radio antennas that are used emit electromagnetic radiation. Serious burns can occur during transmission of the mobile radio if a distance of at least 4 feet from the vehicle is not maintained (you are shielded if you are inside the Chase vehicle)

Once the MMGR has called “Roll Call: Go for Launch”, the RD makes his response for ‘Go’ if and only if there is telemetry being received on the laptop AND there is a GPS lock indicated.

Pinhole video capture should be maintained until loss-of-signal (LOS) - this will occur a few minutes after launch.

Once the Recovery Team has left the launch site, it must proceed to the predicted LZ immediately.

Typically this will take about the same amount of time that it will take for the spacecraft to complete it’s flight.

The ‘navigator’ should map out the best plan for proceeding to the landing zone using the county maps available to make sure the team reaches the LZ before the spacecraft lands.

Contact with the Flight Team should be maintained to help determine if any change in predicted LZ or flight path is occurring during the flight. This should be done at approximately 10 minute intervals. On longer flights (flight distance greater than 75 miles from Ames) mobile radio communications with the flight team may be lost. This makes constant updating of position and predicted LZ critical.

Visual spotting of the balloon is usually possible during the drive to the initial LZ. GPS location can be used to determine distance and elevation from chase vehicle (binoculars can be used to enhance sighting ability).

After the balloon has burst or cutdown has been accomplished, the Flight Team will update the predicted landing zone.

If the LZ has changed, the Recovery Team MUST move quickly to the new predicted LZ.

If visual sighting of spacecraft is possible videotape and still pictures should be taken. Also, if the Recovery Team is in a stationary position, pinhole video should be captured of the landing.
