GESHER SCHOOL NEWS BETSY SCHNEIDER, EDUCATION DIRECTOR

ABOUT GESHER SHABBAT by Sophie Needelman, Gesher School Intern '16-'17

This year's Gesher Shabbatot have featured a wide variety of activities and lenses through which to experience Shabbat as a community. Most recently, Rabbi Yael and Betsy incorporated what they learned at the Shababa Network Summit (which they recently attended in New York City) to integrate a new flavor into the Gesher Shabbat classics. There is a new Gesher School sloth friend named Todah who still continue to make appearances as he overcomes his shyness, and as always new songs are highlighted at each Gesher Shabbat depending on the time of year.

Last month, in honor of Tu B'shvat, each family created their own artistic representation of its family tree to recognize the importance of cultivating deep roots, honoring where we came from, and working together to grow strong and sturdy like the trees that represent each family.

Betsy introduced our Sloth named Todah (from our participation in the Shababa Network out of the 92nd Street Y in NY). Todah loves Shabbat, because everything moves slowly on Shabbat!

A close up peek inside the Torah with our guest, Rabbi Isaac Saposnik

Rabbi Yael and Hilly Rubin lead our spirited Gesher Shabbat,

Shababa style.

HUNGER PROJECT PARTICIPATION

Twelve Dor Hadash teens and adults served brunch last month as part of Beth Israel's Sunday morning Hunger Project. We fed 717 meals at Father Joe's Villages homeless shelter, staffed the coffee/water bar and helped guests choose free clothing items. Here are some thoughts from those who participated:

"I was surprised at how patient and kind most of the recipients were despite their terrible living conditions." "Everyone was very appreciative and courteous." "Do you think that [they would allow us to come back] on other Sundays?  I found it to be a valuable experience and

good for [my daughter]." "It felt really good to work hard and do something for others who are less fortunate than I am and hopefully make a

small change.”

UPDATE FROM THE ENDOWMENT BOARD

The Endowment Fund of Congregation Dor Hadash is a permanent pool of investments created through the gifts and bequests of our members, and managed by the Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego. The fund will provide a stream of income to support the programs of Congregation Dor Hadash in perpetuity; in other words, forever.

The Endowment Board is responsible for encouraging bequests and gifts and administering the assets already entrusted to the Endowment Fund. Since its establishment through a generous bequest from our member, Harriette Schapiro (z'l) more than ten years ago, the Endowment Fund has transferred over $90,000 in earnings to the Congregation's operating account to support various programs which benefit our community. As of December 31, 2016, the Fund had an investment portfolio valued at over $217,000.

The current Endowment Board consists of three elected directors, each of whom serve for three year terms: Peter Bonavich, Mark Nussbaum, and Marilyn Scheininger. In addition, the president of the Congregation has appointed Lee Goldberg to the Endowment Board and John Ciancio serves on the Board as the Congregation's Treasurer.  Board members participate in ongoing training offered by the Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego, and meet regularly to discuss strategies to increase the size of the Endowment.

The Endowment Fund accepts current gifts in memory of or in honor of a loved one, and is seeking bequests—promises from our members and friends to remember Congregation Dor Hadash as a beneficiary of their estate plans.  Dor Hadash holds a unique place in the San Diego Jewish community as the only Reconstructionist synagogue in the county, offering a wide range of services and programs. Our Gesher School pioneered family-centered education and we give back to the larger community through our tikkun olam programs. The Endowment Board's long-term goal is to increase the level of support that the Endowment Fund can provide to our community on an ongoing basis. To do that, we need your help to create a larger Endowment Fund.

Each year in May, the Endowment Board hosts a Donor Recognition Brunch. If you are interested in learning more about how to provide support in perpetuity for the programs that you enjoy, or if you have already made Congregation Dor Hadash part of your estate plan, please reach out to one of us. We would be happy to recognize your gift and send you an invitation to our Donor Recognition Brunch.

ANNUAL NEW MEMBER DINNER HELD FEBRUARY 4

Congregation Dor Hadash's newest members were hosted by Rabbi Yael, Education Director Betsy Schneider, and the Membership Committee at a casual dinner at the home of Patti and Mark Nussbaum.

The adults enjoyed schmoozing while the kids were doing art projects, building with Legos or playing with some vintage 1980s Fisher-Price toys from the Nussbaum's attic. We concluded the evening with havdalah, always a sweet way to end Shabbat and welcome the new week. Todah rabah to Brianna and Melina who helped out with the children. Thank you to the Membership Committee for providing the potluck dinner!

ONE BOOK, ONE CONGREGATION

Please go online to amazon.com through the Dor Hadash website to buy this book or click where indicated above.

On March 19, 2017, 1:00 p.m., at the home of Bleema and Richard Warburton, OBOC will discuss All Who Go Do Not Return by Shulem Deen. Please buy this book at Amazon through Dor Hadash’s website.

•Named one of "forty-three books to read before you die" by the Independent (UK) •2015 National Jewish Book Award Winner •2016 Winner of the GLCA New Writers Award in Nonfiction •One of Star Magazine's "Fab 5 Can’t Miss Entertainment Picks"

All Who Go Do Not Return is a moving and revealing exploration of Hasidic life, and one man’s struggles with faith, family and community. Shulem Deen, a member of the very insular Skverers Hasidic sect, was raised to believe that questions are dangerous. He knew little about the outside world, only that it was to be shunned. His marriage was arranged at the age of 18 and several children soon followed. His first transgression, turning on the radio, was small, but his curiosity led him to the library, and later the Internet. Soon he began a feverish inquiry into the tenets of his religious beliefs, until several years later, his faith unraveled entirely. He feared being discovered and ostracized. His relationship with his family was at stake and he was forced into a life of deception, and began a long struggle to hold on to those he loves most—his five children.

RABBI’S CAFÉ JUDAISM THROUGH A RECONSTRUCTIONIST LENS

10:30 A.M. • Library at SDJA

Discover the concept of Judaism as an “evolving religious civilization” and examine questions such as:

Are the Jews a “chosen people?” In a scientific age, how do I understand evil and suffering?

What obligation do I have to help heal the world (tikkun olam)? How do I decide which Jewish holidays or rituals to observe?

Each unit presents one of the fundamental perspectives of Reconstructionist Judaism established by the movement’s intellectual founder, Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan: belonging, believing and behaving.

Rabbi Kaplan said: “Reconstructionism is not a series of affirmations or conclusions…it is a method of dealing with Judaism, a lens through which to view it.”

Schedule: April 9 and May 7

amazon.com

There are two programs at Amazon to earn $$$ for Dor Hadash. One is the Affiliate program and the other is smile.amazon.com and one offers more reward than the other.

The payback Dor Hadash receives through the Amazon Associates program is much greater than through smile.amazon.com. Qualifying purchases made through the amazon.com links on our

website can result in a payback range of 4%–8.5% on total monthly purchases through our link. In contrast, shopping through smile.amazon.com and selecting Dor Hadash as your qualifying charity,

only 0.5% of qualifying purchaes help to support Dor Hadash! That’s a big difference.

Bottom line—shopping amazon.com through the links on our website, a greater portion of your purchases help to support Dor Hadash—at no additional cost to you!.

The Wine Tasting Social FUN-raiser for Gesher School was a huge success with 40 people in attendance at Koi Zen Cellars urban winery! Thank you to all who attended, donated, bought raffle tickets, additional tastings and bottles during our event.

Koi Zen's barrel and tasting room ambience and the assistance of the awesome owners, Darius & Lisa Miller made for a lovely, smooth-running event.

Raising funds in a fun manner is always good, but more important was the chance to have an adult night out for Gesher parents and for all congregants in attendance, not as volunteers or service attendees, but rather as friends, just to be together at a really enjoyable social gathering!

Winners of the two raffled small wine gift baskets were Ros Goldstein and Sandy Sherman. The grand prize raffle wine gift basket, donated in memory of Rodger Goldman by Jack & Connie Reingold, was won by Betsy Chessler.

Thank you to those that helped set up and/or cleanup. Thank you to the Social FUN-Raiser Committee, Judy Hante, Naomi Jensen, Connie Reingold, Jack Reingold, John Ciancio, and me.
