2 RECOMMENDATION Mitigation measures / design considerations Score a) Development of the site would have minimal detrimental local ecological impact.

b) Development of the site would result in some adverse local ecological impact but there is scope for mitigation.

Complete development of the site would result in the loss of small areas of species-rich and marshy grassland. If it is not possible to retain these areas during the development, replacement habitat (wetlands & native seeding / planting) should be incorporated into the development plans. The hedge along the northern edge of the improved grassland should be retained if possible.

3

c) Development of the site would result in detrimental ecological impacts.

The field closest to Lundhill Road includes a species-rich bank along the western and eastern edges – the rest of the field is less diverse. The middle field consists of species-poor grassland. The third field includes scattered scrub and an area of marshy grassland adjacent to a drain. The improved grassland is dominated by perennial rye-grass. It has a hawthorn and blackthorn hedge along the northern boundary and a small section of species-rich hedge to the east. Additional comments / information Figure 1 shows the Phase 1 Habitat map for the site. Figure 2 shows the areas with significant ecological value. Japanese knotweed was recorded at the site – this must be eradicated before any development takes place. With reference to the data search, no significant issues for protected or priority species have arisen for this site.

Site Description

The site is located to the south-east of Wombwell. It consists of a series of four adjacent fields. There is housing directly north, with farm buildings and a large pond to the south. A section of Barnsley Canal is to the south-east, with the Dearne Valley Parkway behind. Lundhill Road is to the east.

The three fields closest to Lundhill Road are grazed by horses and are linked by open gateways. In the field adjacent to the road a slight bank runs along the southern edge, leading down to a track. This area is species-rich, supporting a high percentage of herbs, including abundant common knapweed (Centaurea nigra), frequent birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus), red clover (Trifolium pratense) and ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata). There are a variety of grasses, including crested dogstail (Cynosaurus cristatus), sweet vernal grass (Anthoxanthum odoratum), common bent (Agrostis capillaris) and Yorkshire fog (Holcus lanatus). The rest of the field and the adjacent field to the east have a higher percentage of grasses, with frequent false oat-grass (Arrhenatherum elatius) and creeping thistle (Cirsium arvense).

The third field is the smallest. It contains scattered hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna), rose (Rosa sp.) and bramble (Rubus fruticosus) scrub to the east. A drain runs along the southern edge of this field and is surrounded by an area of marshy grassland. This area contains small pools of standing water, some of which show ochre pollution. Species in this area include great willowherb (Epilobium hirsutum), soft rush (Juncus effusus), meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria), hard rush (Juncus inflexus), creeping buttercup (Ranunculus repens) and greater birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus pedunculatus). There is some bulrush (Typha latifolia) close to the drain and a few willow (Salix sp) saplings. Along the edge of the drain are tall crack willow trees (Salix fragilis).

The final meadow to the east is accessed from Grantley Close, it cannot be reached through the adjacent fields. It supports improved grassland dominated by perennial rye-grass (Lolium perenne). There is a large stand of Japanese knotweed (Fallopia japonica) to the west of the field. A hedge follows part of the northern boundary. Hawthorn is the main species, but there is also frequent blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) and a small amount of hazel (Corylus avellana). Along boundary with the canal there is scattered scrub and in the eastern corner there is a small area that appears to flood on a seasonal basis, though was dry at the time of the survey. It includes bulrush, great willowherb and some crack willow seedlings. Along the short eastern boundary is a species-rich garden hedge. It is thick and well maintained and includes holly (Ilex aquifolium), hawthorn, blackthorn, elder (Sambucus nigra) and hazel.
