H.4.2 For immediate release December 4, 1963 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended November 27: An increase of $370 million in loans adjusted, decreases of $254 million in holdings of U. S. Government s e c u r i t i e s and $171 million in holdings of "other" securities, an increase of $924 million in demand deposits adjusted, and decreases of $596 million in U. S. Government demand deposits and $358 million in demand deposits credited to domestic commercial banks. Commercial and industrial loans increased a net of $56 million; during the comparable week a.year ago these loans decreased $107 million. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying U. S. Government securities increased $17 million, and their loans for purchasing or carrying "other" securities increased $130 million. Loans to sales and personal financing institutions increased $3 million and loans to "other" nonbank financial institutions increased $3 million, as compared with decreases of $74 million and $20 million, respectively, during the similar week in 1962. Real estate loans increased $28 million. "Other" loans increased $118 million. Holdings of Treasury bills by weekly reporting member banks decreased $195 million, Treasury certificates increased $8 million, and the combined total of Treasury notes and U. S. Government bonds decreased $67 million. Demand deposits adjusted increased in all but two districts and included increases of $4lB million in the Chicago District, $104 million in the St. Louis District, $86 million in the San Francisco District, $84 million i n New York City, $80 million in the Kansas City District and $75 million in the Dallas District. Sayings deposits decreased $109 million and "other" time deposits of individuals, partnerships, and corporations increased $280 million. Borrowings of weekly reporting member banks from Federal Reserve Banks increased $121 million and borrowings from others increased $105 million. shows the f o l l o w i n g pr inc ipa l changes f o r the week ended November 27: An increase

Commercial and i n d u s t r i a l loans increased a net of $56 m i l l i o n ; during the

comparable week a .year ago these loans decreased $107 m i l l i o n . Loans t o brokers and

dealers f o r purchasing or carrying U. S . Government s e c u r i t i e s increased $17 m i l l i o n ,

and t h e i r loans f o r purchasing or carrying "other" s e c u r i t i e s increased $130 m i l l i o n .

Loans to s a l e s and personal f inanc ing i n s t i t u t i o n s increased $3 m i l l i o n and loans to

"other" nonbank f i n a n c i a l i n s t i t u t i o n s increased $3 m i l l i o n , as compared with

decreases of $74 m i l l i o n and $20 m i l l i o n , r e s p e c t i v e l y , during the s imi lar week in

1962. Real e s t a t e loans increased $28 m i l l i o n . "Other" loans increased $118 m i l l i o n .

Holdings of Treasury b i l l s by weekly report ing member banks decreased

$195 m i l l i o n , Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s increased $8 m i l l i o n , and the combined t o t a l of

Treasury notes and U. S. Government bonds decreased $67 m i l l i o n .

Demand depos i t s adjusted increased in a l l but two d i s t r i c t s and included

increases of $4lB m i l l i o n in the Chicago D i s t r i c t , $104 m i l l i o n in the S t . Louis

D i s t r i c t , $86 m i l l i o n in the San Francisco D i s t r i c t , $84 m i l l i o n in New York City ,

$80 m i l l i o n in the Kansas Ci ty D i s t r i c t and $75 m i l l i o n i n the Dal las D i s t r i c t . Sayings
