5°VfV Hill * f^AL F E D E R A L R E S E R V E statistic m release H.4.2 For Immediate release September 19, 1962 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended September 12: Increases of $7^6 million in loans adjusted, $1,195 million in demand deposits adjusted, and $310 million in demand deposits credited to domestic commercial banks; and decreases of $453 million in holdings of U. S. Government securities and $1,204 million in U. S. Government demand deposits. Commercial and industrial loans increased a net of $198 million; during the comparable week a year ago, these loans increased $180 million. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying U. S. Government securities increased $523 million, and their loans for purchasing or carrying "other" securities Increased $64 million. Loans to sales and personal financing institutions decreased $159 million and loans to "other" nonbank financial institutions increased $17 million, as compared with increases of $12 million and $34 million, respectively, during the similar week in 1961. Real estate loans increased $82 million. Other loans increased $26 million. All categories of U. S. Government securities held by weekly reporting member banks decreased: Treasury bills by $160 million, Treasury certificates by $18 million, and the combined t o t a l of Treasury notes and U. S. Government bonds by $275 million. "Other" securities Increased $264 million. Demand deposits adjusted increased in all but one district and included increases of $435 million i n New York City, $139 million in the Chicago District, $118 million in the Cleveland District, $116 million in the San Francisco District, and $106 million in the Boston District. Savings deposits increased $6l million and "other" time deposits of individuals, partnerships, and corporations increased $146 million. Borrowings of weekly reporting member banks from Federal Reserve Banks increased $89 million and borrowings from others increased $144 million. CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES

The condition statement of weekly report ing member banks in leading c i t i e s

shows the following pr inc ipa l changes fo r the week ended September 12: Increases of

$7^6 mil l ion in loans adjusted, $1,195 mill ion in demand deposits adjusted, and

$310 mil l ion in demand deposits credi ted to domestic commercial banks; and decreases

of $453 mil l ion in holdings of U. S. Government s ecu r i t i e s and $1,204 million in

U. S. Government demand deposi ts .

Commercial and indus t r i a l loans increased a net of $198 mill ion; during

the comparable week a year ago, these loans increased $180 mi l l ion . Loans to brokers

and dealers f o r purchasing or carrying U. S. Government secur i t i e s increased $523 mill ion,

and t h e i r loans f o r purchasing or carrying "other" secur i t i e s Increased $64 mil l ion.

Loans to sa les and personal f inancing i n s t i t u t i ons decreased $159 mill ion and loans

to "other" nonbank f inanc i a l i n s t i t u t i ons increased $17 mil l ion, as compared with

increases of $12 mil l ion and $34 mil l ion, respect ively, during the similar week in

1961. Real e s ta te loans increased $82 mi l l ion . Other loans increased $26 mil l ion.

A l l categories of U. S. Government secur i t i e s held by weekly reporting

member banks decreased: Treasury b i l l s by $160 mi l l ion , Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s

by $18 mil l ion, and the combined t o t a l of Treasury notes and U. S. Government bonds

by $275 mi l l ion . "Other" secur i t i e s Increased $264 mi l l ion .

Demand deposits adjusted increased in a l l but one d i s t r i c t and included

increases of $435 mil l ion in New York City, $139 mil l ion in the Chicago D i s t r i c t ,

$118 mil l ion in the Cleveland D i s t r i c t , $116 mil l ion in the San Francisco Di s t r i c t ,

and $106 mil l ion in the Boston D i s t r i c t . Savings deposits increased $6l mill ion

and "other" time deposits of individuals , par tnerships , and corporations increased

$146 mi l l ion .

Borrowings of weekly report ing member banks from Federal Reserve Banks

increased $89 mi l l ion and borrowings from others increased $144 mi l l ion . Loans to

domestic commercial banks decreased $97 mi l l ion .
