FEDERAL RESERVE * f*AL RES^ . * H.4.2 statistical release For immediate release August 22 1962 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BAMS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended August 15: Increases of $838 million in loans adjusted, $788 million in holdings of U. S. Government securities, $316 million in balances with domestic banks, $2,251 million in U. S. Government demand deposits, $373 million in demand deposits credited to domestic commercial banks, and a decrease of $790 million in demand deposits adjusted. Commercial and industrial loans increased in nine districts and a net of $240 million; during the comparable week a year ago, these loans increased $233 million. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying U. S. Government securities increased $253 million, and their loans for purchasing or carrying "other" securities increased $123 million. Loans to sales and personal financing institutions increased $122 million and loans to "other" nonbank financial institutions increased $48 million, as compared with increases of $113 million and $18 million, respectively, during the similar week in 1961. Real estate loans increased $62 million. "Other" loans decreased $9 million. Holdings of Treasury bills by weekly reporting member banks increased $248 million, Treasury certificates increased $894 million, and the combined t o t a l of Treasury notes and U. S. Government bonds decreased $354 million. "Other" securities decreased $58 million. Demand deposits adjusted decreased $176 million i n New York City, $121 million in the Philadelphia District, $113 million in the Boston District, $92 million each in the Chicago and Dallas Districts, and by l e s s e r amounts in all but two other districts. Savings deposits increased $62 million and "other" time deposits of individuals, partnerships, and corporations increased $36 million. Borrowings of weekly reporting member banks from Federal Reserve Banks decreased $298 million and borrowings from others decreased $31 million. The condit ion statement of weekly report ing member banks in leading c i t i e s

shows the fo l l owing pr inc ipa l changes f o r the week ended August 15: Increases of

$838 m i l l i o n in loans adjusted, $788 m i l l i o n in holdings of U. S. Government s e c u r i t i e s ,

$316 m i l l i o n in balances with domestic banks, $2 ,251 m i l l i o n in U. S. Government

demand d e p o s i t s , $373 m i l l i o n in demand depos i t s c red i t ed t o domestic commercial

banks, and a decrease of $790 m i l l i o n in demand depos i t s adjusted.

Commercial and i n d u s t r i a l loans increased in nine d i s t r i c t s and a net of

$240 m i l l i o n ; during the comparable week a year ago, these loans increased $233 m i l l i o n .

Loans t o brokers and dealers f o r purchasing or carrying U. S. Government s e c u r i t i e s

increased $253 m i l l i o n , and t h e i r loans f o r purchasing or carrying "other" s e c u r i t i e s

increased $123 m i l l i o n . Loans to s a l e s and personal f inanc ing i n s t i t u t i o n s increased

$122 m i l l i o n and loans t o "other" nonbank f i n a n c i a l i n s t i t u t i o n s increased $48 mi l l i on ,

as compared with increases of $113 m i l l i o n and $18 m i l l i o n , r e s p e c t i v e l y , during the

s imi lar week in 1961. Real e s t a t e loans increased $62 m i l l i o n . "Other" loans

decreased $9 m i l l i o n .

Holdings of Treasury b i l l s by weekly report ing member banks increased

$248 m i l l i o n , Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s increased $894 m i l l i o n , and the combined t o t a l

of Treasury notes and U. S. Government bonds decreased $354 m i l l i o n . "Other" s e c u r i t i e s

decreased $58 m i l l i o n .

Demand depos i t s adjusted decreased $176 m i l l i o n in New York City , $121 mi l l i on

in the Phi ladelphia D i s t r i c t , $113 m i l l i o n in the Boston D i s t r i c t , $92 mi l l i on each

in the Chicago and Dal las D i s t r i c t s , and by l e s s e r amounts in a l l but two other

d i s t r i c t s . Savings depos i t s increased $62 m i l l i o n and "other" time deposi ts of

i n d i v i d u a l s , partnerships , and corporations increased $36 m i l l i o n .
