2 – H2.0.4

Describe changes in the local community over time (e.g. types of businesses, architecture and landscape, jobs, transportation, population)

While teaching this unit I would use sources from the community of the school, however, I chose a nearby community to do my ILA.

Primary Source Books

The Railroads of Holland, Michigan Volume 1. and A Picture Album of Holland Michigan. Both works by Donald L. van Reken from the 19th Century.

My Grandparents have both of these books in their home, but requested that I did not take them in to class.

(I found similar pictures online.)

PoemCome Down to Holland in Tulip Time (paraphrase of Alfred Noyes' poem: "It's Lilac Time in London.”)

"Come down to Holland in Tulip Time, in tulip time,

Come down to Holland in tulip time, it isn't far to go.

And you shall wander, hand in hand,

Friend with friend in Holland - with friends in summer’s wonderland.

Come down to Holland in tulip time, it isn't far to go!”

- Lida Rogers (original creator of Tulip Time in Holland) created this poem for her presentation of the idea for Tulip Time

(Taken from Unit Plan on previous slide)

Photos – Past to Present

Four of these photos were found from the “Remembering Holland” Facebook page, and I would use them in my lesson to help students compare past buildings to present. The two photos in the center are current pictures of Holland.
