L ast month we ad-dressed the office of Chapter Director and planned to address the

Assistant Chapter Director and other officer positions within the chapter this month. However, with the announcement from GWRRA National regarding changes in chapter structure that will be effective 1/1/18, we will change gears on our plans. GWRRA was founded with a small group of people who met to go for a ride and have dinner…..guess what …. we still do that today. The difference is that the organi-zation grew and so did the struc-

ture, rules, and guidelines to help keep us all in order. Now that our organization is experiencing a downward trend in membership, like many other social and busi-ness organizations, National is making structure changes to take us back to the more social and fun side. Beginning in January 2018, the chapter will only be required to have a Chapter Director, Treas-urer, Ride Coordinator, and MEP. The Chapter Directors will be tasked to focus on members and ensure the chapter is healthy and having fun. To assist in this en-deavor, the MEP will become more of a fun/social planning per-son and the Ride Coordinator will continue to plan fun rides and events for the members. Treas-urer – well they will continue to do what Treasurer’s do – handle our chapter funds. As we learn more about this new structure, we will continue to share that in-formation with the membership. Now, at our July meeting, we had a fairly small crowd as many of our folks were on vacation. Sid and Terry being two of those off enjoying family and time away. Jerry stepped up to give Sid’s Rider Education presentation. If you missed it, he brought “show and tell” and filled in nicely for Sid. Thank you Jerry!

We did have a new perspective member – Ernest Cagle – invited by J. O. Lyon. It was a pleasure to have Ernest and we’re pretty sure he’s on his way to being our new-est GWRRA member. Please consult the ride schedule here in the newsletter or on-line at www.gwrra-nch2.org and join us when you can. Until then, ride safe and often and HAVE FUN!

T hanks to Jerry Hyde for taking care of the safety talk at our July gathering while Terry

and I were on a family vacation in the Charlotte area. Yes, that is me in the picture on the Fury roller coaster! Look Terry, no hands! That safety topic was about hydra-tion. Coincidentally, we were staying hydrated the next day at Carowinds. With the temperature hovering around 98 to a 100 de-grees in the shade, Carowinds was also very conscious of the heat and potential dehydration prob-lem. They were making an an-nouncement about every 15 min-utes telling everyone in the park that all food and drink locations in the park would be offering free glasses of cold water all day! We certainly took advantage of that offer on many occasions! Thank-fully, we did not hear of any heat related issues while we were there. The old saying, “An ounce

of pre-

vention is worth more than a pound of cure” was certainly very true and appropriate for that day. By now, you may have read the articles or watched the videos that have come from the GWRRA home office in Phoenix about re-structuring GWRRA. Whether you like change or not, change will al-ways be with us. The gist of these changes is that the Region level of management will be eliminated on December 31, 2017 and the Chapter Educator position will change to a Chapter Ride Coordi-nator. Phoenix has said, “As we change our focus, we need to have someone coordinate our rides. We want this position to be under Rider Education so this per-son has to believe and participate in our Rider Education program and be at least a level 2, which is why they are an Officer of Rider Education. Their role will not be the same as the previous role of

the Chapter Educator as we want you to

f o c u s

your energy on planning all variety of rides that suit your Chapter Participants. As you get ready for that ride you will conduct a very informative Rider Meeting and you will encourage safety, i.e. T-Clocs, group riding techniques; safety clothes and more. You ac-cept the Riders that show and they need to be in compliance with State law. You will encour-age, communicate and lead the way sharing GWRRA’s benefits of safety as developed through our Rider Education Program. You will not be focused on paperwork, but on the opportunities to ride and share.” Gary Harris, our current Ride Co-ordinator, and I often “work” to-gether when planning or conduct-ing a ride. We both have the same safety related ideas about how a ride should be conducted. As we await more information from Phoenix and our District staff, we will continue in our roles until notified otherwise. As for me, I applaud GWRRA for seeing what was not working in GWRRA

T here isn’t any better feeling than sitting at a stop light waiting for it to change, looking over

at the driver next to you and hear-ing them say those two magic words – nice bike. Or while gas-sing up, you see someone come out of a convenience store and look at your bike adoringly. Our bikes are an extension of our-selves. Receiving compliments about our bike is almost as gratify-ing as getting a good hug. It’s time for a change at Wing Ding 38 in Billings!

W ing Ding 38 will bring major changes to the Bike Show. Critical judges looking for something wrong – gone! Numerous classes with lots of rules – gone! Devoting an entire day of Wing Ding to par-ticipating in the Bike Show (not counting cleaning time) – gone! Showing pride in our rides for eve-

ryone to admire – now you’re talking!

Here’s the plan. One afternoon, all bike show entrants will place their bikes on display in the designated location. Each entrant, along with everyone coming to look at the bikes, will be given a ballot to pick their favorite bike using whatever criteria they choose. No special judging rules – just “People’s Choice.”

Favorites will be selected in each of five categories – bike, trike, bike with trailer, trike with trailer, and sidecar. Classification will be made simple – just count the number of tires! No special in-spections, points or cumbersome rules. Don’t think just because you don’t have thousands invested in artwork or chrome you won’t win, and hence, you don’t even enter. We haven’t forgotten that every-

one loves winning. Every entry will be placed into a drawing for sev-eral desirable prizes to be awarded during the Bike Show, giving everyone an equal opportu-nity to win.

The Wing Ding 38 Bike Show will be about getting together with new and old friends, walking around to see what others have done to personalize their bikes, picking up some new ideas for our own next project, and enjoying others casting those adoring looks at our bikes. That sounds like something I want to be part of! How about you?

W hat is your favorite thing about mem-bership in this awe-some association

we belong to? I’ll tell you what mine is…making new friends. Some of the people I hold most dear are friends I have met thanks to our membership in GWRRA. I look forward to seeing them, no matter how seldom that may be, and they lift my spirits just by be-ing there.

Not that we need them to let us know, but studies have shown that friends have a huge impact on our happiness. They can bring more happiness into our lives than pretty much anything else. Friends improve our mood. Spending time with happy, positive people can elevate our mood and improve our outlook on life in general. Friends help us reach our goals. Encouragement from friends boosts our willpower and im-proves our chance of success. Friends reduce our stress and de-pression. Having good friends ac-tually boosts our immune system. Friends support us through tough times. Having friends to share our problems with, such as the loss of a job or a loved one, helps us cope with life’s curve balls. Just remem-ber that friendship is a two-way street and the friendship you give contributes to your own sense of self-worth. Being there for friends reinforces the fact that you are needed and adds purpose to your

life. Be a Friend – Have a Friend. It enriches our lives beyond meas-ure. Yep, the favorite part of my membership is all of the friend-ships we have made through GWRRA.

The convention/rally in West Vir-ginia on the 22nd & 23rd of July gave me another chance to con-nect with friends I hadn’t seen in some time and to make new friends. I want to thank Bill & Beth Ann McCormick and their great staff for providing the opportunity to do that. It was a great time in Summersville. We are looking for-ward to going to Cave City, Ken-tucky next month for their con-vention/rally so that we can re-peat the experience. We hope to see you there.

Speaking of conventions, if you haven’t seen the flyer for the Re-gion “N” rally in November take a minute to go out to the Region website and download it, fill it out, and send it in. Let’s make the comeback for the Region a huge success. It’s been a long time com-ing, so tell your friends and bring your neighbors for a great time in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Until next time, remember to ride safe, ride often, and above all else have FUN.

I found this years ago in a Home Owners’ Associa-tion newsletter and have had it posted at work as a

reminder. Looking at it the other day (and knowing I had to write a newsletter article) I thought about how the lessons apply not only to my work, but to GWRRA members as well.

Fact 1: As each goose flaps its wings, it creates “uplift” for the birds that follow. By flying in a “V” formation, the whole flock adds 71% greater range than if each bird flew alone.

Lesson: Our members share a common purpose, sense of be-longing and community. We work with each other as we share com-mon goals. Events are more fun and happen more easily because we work from the energy of the group. The same holds true when we are group riding. We are safer traveling together and the ride seems shorter because we enjoy the synergy and company of oth-ers.

Fact 2: When one goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of flying alone. It quickly moves back in formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird im-mediately in front of it.

Lesson: As members of GWRRA, a Region, District and Chapter, we support all the members. Through

Sunshine, we learn when some-one needs help, prayers or advice and we quickly move to support them. As individual members, we are willing to accept help when it is needed because we know that others really care for us.

Fact 3: When the lead goose tires, it rotates back into formation and another goose flies to the point position.

Lesson: This is something that all directors and leaders try to as-sure: the successful succession of leadership within the Chapter, District, Region, etc. In some ar-eas, we need to ask more of the members to make certain this oc-curs. Taking turns with the re-sponsibilities that come with lead-ership is sometimes hard to do, but is necessary if we are to con-tinue to grow. We all have a multi-tude of knowledge, skills and ca-pabilities we can use to help each other.

Fact 4: The geese flying in forma-tion honk to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.

Lesson: We encourage our team members by attendance at rides, gatherings and rallies, and by re-sponding with a “Yes” when asked to do something. In groups where the members work together, there is more fun and things hap-pen more quickly.

Fact 5: When a goose gets sick,

wounded or shot down, two geese drop out of formation and follow it down to help and protect it. They stay until it dies or can fly again. Then they launch out with another formation or catch up with the flock.

Lesson: The geese have common sense and are a community. Like them, we share in the hardships (and the joy) of others within GWRRA. We are there for each other when needed. All we need to do is ask!

I think of some of these facts and lessons every time I see geese, especially when they are flying in formation, or when I see three on the side of the road. As we learn from nature and enjoy the beauty of the natural world, I hope you will never look at geese the same after learning the lessons they can teach us.

group of volunteers who teach us to be safe on the road. Well there’s no way to put a price on that but if you’re a participant in H2 the price is free because H2 will reimburse you whatever nominal cost you had to pay.

The most often overlooked bene-fit is Member Benefits. A group of discounts that the National team has negotiated to save us a sad-dlebag full of money. When you go on a trip there are a bunch of hotels in all service levels that will give you 10-20% off your stay. And you can call them from the parking lot because when you’re out on a ride you may not know where you’re going to stop. Every-one loves the deep cuts you get at Office Depot. When I had our wedding programs printed I saved

hundreds. After I booked a cruise I found out that you can now get discounts on cruises. Palm to the head. Then there’s car rentals. I know, who needs a car when you’ve got a bike. But there are times …

So go out there and enjoy all your benefits that your $40 a year af-ford you.

made for a joint North Carolina/Virginia Training day in Goldsboro on Saturday, August 26th. (Continued from page 7) and making changes to get us back to our original roots which include a lot more riding together and a lot less paperwork! I also think it shows that Phoenix has been lis-tening to individual members and officers at every level. As we await more definitive guidance, let us all remember why we joined GWRRA in the first place. Just like the name implies, we are Gold Wing Road Riders (or Restaurant Raiders if you like). The operative words are Gold Wing. That is what unites us all.

Does this change mean that I will no longer be urging you to take rider and co-rider training courses, medic first aid classes, road cap-tain courses, group riding, et cet-era, et cetera?!? Absolutely not! We (includes me too!) can always become better riders and co-riders and that is what our motto says, “Friends for fun, safety and knowledge.” We just want to put more fun back into GWRRA. MSF says: “THE MORE YOU KNOW, THE BETTER IT GETS!” SID says: “THE MORE YOU PRAC-TICE WHAT YOU KNOW, THE BET-TER YOU GET!”

(Continued from page 4)

A ll of us have different reasons for belonging to GWRRA. Some of us enjoy the fellow-

ship and the opportunity to ride in a group. We all know that rid-ing is fun. The wind on your face. The freedom of riding while not being hemmed in with a cage around you. And when you add the group experience. Not only your local friends but friends all around the world who share your love of riding big, fancy bikes. Yeah it’s worth $40 a year and more.

Then there’s the Gold Book. A list of members who have agreed to come to your aid if you’re in a strange land and need a helping hand. I’d pay at least $40 a year for that.

My Kitchen Adventure

Creamy, sweet, smooth, I knew this is good because it is Delores’ most often requested dessert. The question was whether I could make it as well. I said that I wanted to make it alone, without any help but the recipe she gave me. But after I made a big mess in the kitchen she couldn’t resist the temptation to come to my aid. It was a very easy dish to make. I did

all the mixing in the blender and it came out nice and smooth.

It was rather fun cooking to-gether, especially since I was the chef. Delores makes a pretty good sous chef when she wasn’t trying to tell me what to do. Which was-n’t often. All in all we made a pretty good team.

After I got home from buying the ingrediens I thought that it would look and taste great with a dab of whipped cream on top. Well, I have more. I’ll try it later. And now, I think I’ll go and gain a little more weight.
