4-H
January 2017 Newsletter
We want to drastically boost our enrollment so go let every-one know how great 4-H is, all it can do for them, and how much fun we will all have together. Membership allows you to participate in any and all 4-H activities, giving you resources, guidance, and insurance for all 4-H activities. You will not be on your own, we will support you through-out each step of the process. Find what interests you, get friends to participate with you, and have fun doing it. To sign up for 4-H register at www.4honline.com. If you were enrolled before do not create a new profile, use the email address and password from the previous year. If this is your first time to enroll, complete the application. BE SURE TO KEEP YOUR PASSWORD! Let us know if there is any problems. Once you fill out your profile and submit we will approve from the county level, then it will move on to the state level. If you are going to help a club, project or help with any 4H children you must have the background check completed.

Texas 4-H Opportunity Scholarship: Texas 4-H
Youth Development Program Opportunity Scholarships are academic scholarships awarded each year to applicants based on their academic record, 4-H experience, and financial need (for scholarships for which it is a required criterion). The Texas 4-H Youth Development Opportunity Scholarship Program is conducted by the Texas 4-H Youth Development Foundation. All applications must be submitted through the applicant’s county Extension office and meet all criteria to be considered.
Texas 4-H Collegiate 4-H Scholarship: The Texas 4-H Youth Development Foundation
provides a limited number of collegiate scholarships to students who are currently enrolled in a Texas col-lege or university. These scholarships are awarded to deserving former 4-H members who have continued
to excel in both academics and service at the collegiate level. See the link below for more information.
Stock Show Scholarships: When you apply for a 4-H scholarship, you are automatically en-
tered into the application process for stock shows in Texas. Stock show scholarships are based on your plac-ing in the overall scholarship program. The exception is Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. You will be con-sidered for the main Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo scholarship in your general 4-H scholarship applica-tion, but Houston has other scholarships you can apply for separately. You can only receive one scholarship from Houston so we recommend that you apply for the main 4-H scholarship as well as any others you quali-fy for with Houston, such as the exhibitor scholarship.
The Texas Extension Education Association Scholarship: This scholarship is for high
school seniors who have been involved in 4-H for four years, have shown leadership and personal development, plan to get a college or vocational degree, and have not passed their 19th birthday by January 1 of the current application year. Applications are submitted to your county AgriLife Extension office.

Academic Eligibility for 4-H Events Contest &
Stock Shows
In order to participate in 4-H Contests and stock shows, you
must be academically eligible, just like for UIL events, school
sports, etc.. Below are the procedures that the Extension Office
will follow to make sure 4-H members are eligible to partici-
pate in events:
4-H Events where members will be missing school:
If 4-H members will be missing school to attend a 4-H event,
contest or stock show, the Extension Office will send a letter to
the school, to check that students are eligible to participate.
It is the PARENT/CHILD’S RESPONSIBILITY to take a
note to school (or complete a pre-arranged absence form)
stating the exact dates the child will miss school. With
stock shows and fairs, it is impossible for our office to know
the exact dates everyone will be out of school. Please help us
keep the Wichita County 4-H program in good standing with
the schools by communicating with them on when a child will
be out for a 4-H event.
4-H Events where members will NOT be missing school:
For an event where a 4-H member will not be missing school,
members will be required to submit a copy of their most
current report card to the Extension Office BEFORE
participating in the event.

The VFD Changes Impacting Youth Livestock Exhibitors
** The updated Veterinary Feed Directive took effect January 1st, 2017.
What do you need to know as a 4-H Livestock Exhibitor?
You must have an established Veterinary Client Patient Relationship with your Veterinarian.
Most antibiotics that are currently available “over the coun-ter” (OTC) will now be in the VFD or Rx drug category. Click below to
see the lists of drugs transitioning to VFD and Rx status. new VFD status drugs new Rx status drugs
To administer a VFD drug to your livestock, you must obtain a VFD order from your Veterinarian.
The Veterinarian will obtain the original VFD order. The livestock exhibitor will retain one copy and give another copy to the
feed distributor supplying the feed or drug.
Keep your VFD orders and records for at least 2 years.
VFD feed and drugs must be administered only according to the directions of the VFD order.
Why is it important you keep a record of your 4-H activities? Because, by recording your
activities you can remember all the fun you’ve had so far, and set future goals! Keeping
records of 4-H projects could help you when you apply for college scholarships too! 4-H
Recordbooks are books you make to record your annual projects.
http://texas4-h.tamu.edu/recordbooks/ has several resources to help organize your
Recordbook.
