Evolution of Metadata
Different communities – of both users and practitioners
Different levels of interaction and of interoperability
H. Weinberger - A. Frank5
Introduction to Metadata
1. Metadata definition
2. What is metadata?
3. Why metadata?
4. Dimensions of metadata &
development approaches
5. Categories of metadata
H. Weinberger - A. Frank6
Metadata is ”Data about Data" -Descriptions of what kind of information resource is stored where, how it is encoded, how it is related to other information and where it comes from.
Metadata is machine understandable information for the web.
http://www.w3.org/Metadata/
1 .Metadata Definition
H. Weinberger - A. Frank7
2 .What is Metadata?
Metadata is data: what, where, how. Ex: Where can I find what is there?
How to define it? Structured data about data: templates. Ex: TL, SH, AU, WO - in Aleph. Machine understandable information about
resources: standards, protocols, etc. Ex: HTTP, z39, XML. Metadata can describe data, information,
knowledge. Ex: URL, URN.
H. Weinberger - A. Frank8
3 .Why Metadata?
H. Weinberger - A. Frank9
4 .Dimensions of Metadata & Development Approaches
1. Resource dimension – origin: Bibliographic control approach– Structural Metadata: fields of description.– Metadata Key: for managing the object in networked
environment.
2. System dimension – origin: Data management approach– Enabling Technologies: infrastructure for
information retrieval, search & access information.– Standards: used for Semantic & Syntactic
Interoperability to bridge over communities of users.
H. Weinberger - A. Frank10
4.1 Resource Dimension
Metadata & Information Resource Discovery Discovery and description of Web
resources are facilitated by the use of metadata: – Supports Information Retrieval (IR).– Enhances SEs & Web crawlers capabilities.
Self-descriptive information that Web authors can embed directly in their documents.
H. Weinberger - A. Frank11
4.2 System Dimension
Metadata & Information Resource Discovery
Discovery and description of Web resources are facilitated by the use of metadata: – Supports Information Retrieval (IR). – Enhances SEs & Web crawlers capabilities.
Self-descriptive information that Web authors can embed directly in their documents.
H. Weinberger - A. Frank12
5 .Categories of Metadata
1. Descriptive Systems
2. Structural Systems
3. Administrative Metadata

4. Layers of metadata, or: How is metadata shared?
– Metadata as language; metadata records as sets of statements.
– Effective transmission of information requires agreement on: semantics
– what terms mean– e.g., “cat”, “to sit”, “mat”
structure– significance of arrangement of terms– e.g., sentence: subject -> verb -> object
(in English….) syntax
– rules of expression– “The cat sat on the mat.”
H. Weinberger - A. Frank24
4 .Layers of Interoperability
Layers of interoperability architecture:
1. Syntax: Formats, Protocols & Templates
2. Common Tools: Enabling search, Navigation & retrieval
3. Semantics: Tables, Indices, Cataloging rules
H. Weinberger - A. Frank25
5. Advantages
Communicating data between applications:
Benefits– Transparent management of different
applications and software. Integrate wide range of information services in a distributed and heterogeneous network environment.
Resource discovery application – Transparent searching of and retrieval of data
from diverse systems and in different metadata formats.
H. Weinberger - A. Frank26
6. Examples (1)
Interoperability in practice:– Sharing information between applications
regardless of format, standard or protocol.Examples: Z39.50, MARC, Dublin Core, Roads,
RDF
Supporting Interoperability architecture at 3 levels: 1. Syntax: Formats, Protocols & Templates2. Common Tools: Enabling search,
Navigation & retrieval3. Semantics: Tables, Indices, Cataloging
rules
H. Weinberger - A. Frank27
6 .Examples (2)
1. MARC2. Z39.50 from the Library of
congress (Structural)3. Dublin Core (Descriptive)4. ROADS (Descriptive)5. RDF (Structural)
H. Weinberger - A. Frank28
7 .Interoperability in DL
Interoperability features of Metadata in DL: Elements description: The Dublin Core Documentation element description. Resource Description Framework: RDF
Metadata framework: interoperability between applications.
Protocols: Z39.50 interchange protocol Structured Markup Languages: SGML, HTML, XML
H. Weinberger - A. Frank29
8 .Semantic Interoperability
