One of the seven sisters of the north east of India, Meghalaya covers an area of 300 kilometers (approx) in length and about 100 kilometers (approx) in breadth. It is surrounded by Assam on the north and east and by Bangladesh on the south and west.

Abundant rainfall, sun-shine, virgin forests, high plateaus, tumbling waterfalls, crystal clear rivers, meandering streamlets ornament Meghalaya with natural beauty. But the real jewels of Meghalaya are the sturdy, intelligent and hospitable people.

Khasis, Jaintias and Garos are the main tribes of Meghalaya.

People of Meghalaya

People who reside in the Garo Hills are known as the Garos.

Besides the Garo hills, there are Garo settlements in the plains of Assam and Bangladesh. The Garos call themselves Achik-mande. In the Garo language Achik means Hills and mande, Man. So, Achik-mande means the Hills people.

The traditional Garo female dress is a piece of cloth around the waist and a blouse or vest. The men usually wear, in addition to cloth, a turban. Males and females both wear bangles and earrings. The chief meals of the Garos consist of rice with onions, capsicum and salt thrice a day. Practically all types of animal foods are taken. The liquor is not distilled, but prepared by brewing food grains.

The society is matrilineal like the Khasis and the Jaintias. Till death, the new-born baby belongs to the mother's family, irrespective of sex, even after\r\nmarriage. Marriage within the clan is completely prohibited and severely punishablefor both the Khasis and the Garos.

Till now, the institution of Bachelors Dormitories which is gradually disappearing amongst the tribes of North Eastern Region, are found in the Garo villages. In such dormitories young people stay and live together till they are married. They receive various training in the dormitories like protection of crops, construction of roads, organising festivals, sports and ceremonies.

The Khasis and Garos are now mostly Christians. But before that, they used to pray natural objects.

A journey to the abode of the colouds

There is an air of expectancy in the journey. You begin your trip and soon hit the hills as the road follows a serpentine path, giving you the first impression of a peculiar quaintness.

The small road-side tea shops, the glistening pots and pans scrubbed to a silvery sheen, the smiling Khasi ladies serving at the tea stalls, an innovative water supply system of bamboos dug out to serve as pipes, all giving a feeling of neatness, a feeling of living with nature.

Page 7: hindisahityasimanchal.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewRanikor: 140 Kms from Shillong, a place of scenic beauty. Ranikor is one of Meghalaya's most popular spots for angling,

The road winds its way through tropical forests and with each bend of the road you get a glimpse of the variety of the flora and fauna that abound the state of Meghalaya. A flock of parrots may whoosh past your car, a lone orchid would hang in silent resplendence on a giant tree, the turtle doves would scamper to safety to give way to your car and the most charming and exhilarating part of it - a drive through the rain with the sun still shining and then your car suddenly disappearing into the mist to transport you to another heavenly experience.

After a short journey from Guwahati one reaches Byrnihat, a famous trading place since yore and now a bustling township. One can take a detour and visit the picnic spot of Umtru. Most of the villages on the way have a name beginning with 'um' meaning water in the Khasi language. The road winds ahead and an interesting part of the journey is the stretch beyond Umling where one can reach uphill and look down to see the road traversed to reach the high point. All through the journey babbling streams run along the road and you are served with chilled mineral water at any point. For the more enterprising traveller there are many rapids and the river flowing along, touching the road at several points gives him the the chances to take a quick dip or to guzzle a frothy beer.

Nongpoh is the mid-point of the journey. In the good old days when a backpack ride or ponies were the only means of reaching Shillong, this was the overnight rest spot. From here it was 60 km of the journey past and 60 km of the journey ahead. The road side market of Nongpoh has a flavour of its own. The fruit stalls are a major draw, with luscious fruit at throw away prices. For the everyday traveller there is a variety of vegetables, both from the plains and the hills. The Nongpoh market was once famous for its venision, parrots and mynas pet stalls, but for them to be available today one needs a fair share of luck also, you can buy orchids at unbelievably low prices, if you are lucky. A captivating up-hill drive through idyllic country scenario and you enter 'pineland'. As the winds whisper through them, the sonorous chirping of the birds is broken by the roar of water hurtling down and believe it, you can feel the spray, sitting down in your car a waterfall cascading down in silver and froth, to lap up the boulders and rocks below.

You may have not got over the excitement of the vista, the emerald groves, when a few moments ahead, nestled in the hills, one comes across a majestic placid lake amidst the sylvan heights. The green of the surroundings, the azure blue of the skies have a hypnotising effect. The placid setting is truly idyllic. Water sports and angling are the prime attractions in the Orchid Lake Resort here.

The enchanted Shangrilla, The Scotland of the East is not very far ahead and as the car strains itself up the final climb, you are soon in Shillong - the town to be there, to get away from the humdrum of city life. Shillong is the town of the famed Wards Lake, Lady Hydari Park, Golf Links, The Shillong peak (1965 mtrs), the Spread

Eagle, Crinoline and Bishop, Beadon Falls, the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians; all spots with a charm of their own. Shillong is the base point to go to the wettest spot on the earth,, the caves near Mausmai, Nature trekking in the hills is also an exilarating experience where one can embrace the plethora of the three hundred varieties of orchids that abound in Meghalaya like the Blue Vanda, the Lady's Slipper, and that botanical wonder, the carnivorous Pitcher Plant.

A warm and hospitable welcome awaits you, so next holiday make it to nowhere else but to Shillong, an experience you will cherish lifetime!

Smit: The trek begins from State Library and after passing the Crinoline Falls, it ascends till it reaches Laitkor. This two-day trek includes some parts along the metalled road.

Mawlyngot: It is a fairly big village, connected by a proper road. The route after this village descends sharply till it reaches the Singsong gorge along the Um Song River. Both the banks of Um Song River are covered by thick mix forest with dense undergrowth.

Pynursla: The route after Um Song ascends sharply till it reaches the town of Pynursla.

Weiloi to Ponkung / Pongkung to Umngi: One can reach Weiloi village from Shillong by car/bus. On the way from Weiloi to Umngi there exist two natural mineral water springs. The Hot Spring of Umngi has the potential for becoming a health resort. From Weiloi, one can also opt for a less exhausting shorter route via Mawblang.

Besides these routes, there exist some excellent long bridle path s which were constructed by the erstwhile British rulers. The path from Ladmawphlang to Mawngap is one among them. It was made by Captain David Scott.

Teeing Off in Shillong

Golf was introduced to Shillong in 1898 by a group of British Civil Service officers who initially constructed a nine hole course in an area called laban. It was only after the first world war that Shillong gained popularity as a golf resort for European golfers from East Bengal and Calcutta, and in 1924 the present 18 hole course with its picturesque club house was inaugurated.

The course is set in an undulating valley covered with thick groves of pine and rhododendron trees. The tight fairways are carpeted with an indigenous species of

local grass which hardens the soil and makes the course tough to play. The longest hole on the course is the 594 yards, sixth, which makes it an extremely trying hole, and also one of the longest in India.

The tight fairways are difficult to negotiate in any case, but the task is made more trying by the number of out-of-bounds streams that criss-cross almost every fairway. Most of the approaches are uphill shots and even veterans opt to play safe. The greens are as challenging as the fairways. They are lightening fast and are invariable trapped by heavy sand bunkers. Not only is the Shillong course scenic and enjoyable, but it is also challenging. Obstructions don't come only in the form of bunkers and trees, but also rain. Shillong is just 56 km from the wettest place in the world! Shillong Golf Club Polo ground, Shillong

Located in the north-eastern corner of the district, Rajasimla is one of the earliest villages to be visited by the American Missionaries in the early years of the last century.

The name Rajasimla was given to this place to commemorate the treaty between the Rajah or Zamindar of Bijni and the villagers which recognized

Page 13: hindisahityasimanchal.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewRanikor: 140 Kms from Shillong, a place of scenic beauty. Ranikor is one of Meghalaya's most popular spots for angling,

this particular spot as the boundary between the territory of the Rajah and the independent Garo villages.

The place is of particular interest to Garo Christians because it was here that the American Baptist Missionaries laid the foundation of a church on 14th April, 1867. Prior to this the Missionaries had gained two converts, uncle and nephew, named Omed and Ramke who were baptized by dr. Miles Gronson on 8th February, 1863, at Sukhleswar Ghat in Gauhati. These two persons worked actively to spread the Christian message and also opened a school in Damra. The School at Rajasimal was opened later.

At present, Rajasimla has one High School, a Hospital and a Veterinary Hospital. It serves as a base for socio-cultural contacts among all the surrounding villages and here such plays as Kalsin-Sonatchi, Serejing Wal’jan and other dramas are regularly staged. Local theatres are still in a formative stage and need time to develop, but the local people deserve credits for their talents in this art form.

Resubelpara

This important village is located in the northern part of the district. It is the headquarters of the Resubelpara Development Block. It has a Post Office, a Hospital and Veterinary Hospital as well as a number of Government Offices. It also has a Government Aided School and a Government Aided Girls’ High School as well as a Basic Training Centre for Lower Primary School Teachers.

Rong’bang Falls

Locally known as Rong’bang dare, this waterfall is situated 25 miles away from Tura on the Tura Williamnagar Road, a little beyong Rombagre village. It is a tributary of the Simsang River which can be seen from this road but the real beauty and magnitude of it can be experienced when one goes down to the place at the bottom of the waterfalls.

This Sprightly fall, though perennial, is at its best during the monsoon months. It presents motorists driving from Asanangre towards Williamnagar, a romantic visual of lasting satisfaction. Although the fall is located about crow-flight kilometres away from the highway, the width and depth of the falls are enough to make it clearly visible and a sheer delight. Clustered on either side by vast evergreen hills of bamboo’s which sway, leaving the viewer with memories of ecstatic joy.

Williamnagar

It is the district headquarters of East Garo Hills. Williamnagar is situated on the upper reaches of the Simsang River, and for this reason it was originally called Simsanggre, the name being changed in 1976 to Williamnagar, after

The presence of an a ‘sim or salt-lick nearby still attracts many kinds of wild animals. Surrounding thick jungles provide an ideal haunt for wild animals like elephants and tigers.

This place is becoming an important center for cultural, educational and socio-economical activities. The rural people of surrounding areas are also provided with agricultural training facilities.

The township has one Civil Hospital, a Veterinary Hospital, a Post Office, a Telephone Exchange and a Police Station.

As Williamnagar is the district headquarters, major offices are being established here together with accommodation for the government staff serving here. The government Circuit House and the District Council Inspection Bungalow overlook the beautiful Simsang River.

Bus services ply daily between the township and other places within the Garo Hills and outside. One such service connects Williamnagar to Shillong. The service may use the alternative route via Nongstoin in West Khasi Hills in the event of floods in the plains.

As a planned town, it has the advantage that older towns in Meghalaya do not have, which give a better look and a better layout to it.

The land is very fertile and suitable for horticultural products of various kinds.

Rongresgiri

Located on the left bank of the River Simsang close to Williamnagar, the district headquarters of East Garo Hills, Rongrengiri and its environs are covered with tall, elegant and mature Sal trees which constitute the Rongrengiri Reserve Forest covering an are of over thirty six square kilometers. During the British Expedition to annex Garo Hills to British India, they faced the last major Garo resistance to their intrusion at Rongrengiri. After days of seize, they succeeded on 12th December 1837 to fell the Garo Warrior Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma who led the Garos, at Chisobibra near Rongrengiri. This broke the Garo resistance and the British annexed Garo Hills with ease. A simple Memorial to Pa Togan has been erected at Chisobibra within Rongrengiri Reserve Forest. A function to commemorate the fallen martyr Pa Togan, is held annually at the site of the Memorial, on the anniversary of his martyrdom.

Rongrengiri is ten kilometres off Williamnagar on the Tura- Asanangre-williamnagar state Highway. At Rongrengiri, the River Simsang provides an excellent spot for anglers to try their hand for big as well as small catch.

Wildlife lovers will find flocks of Imperial-Pigeons grazing for calcinates, on the sandy banks of the Simsang River, at Chisobibra.

Darugiri Reserve Forest

Alongside the Dudhnoi- Damra-Darugiri-Baghmara road, at Darugiri, one comes across a vast expanse of Reserve Forest, covering an area of approximately ten-and-a-half square kilometres. This is the Darugiri reserve Forest set up towards the close of nineteenth century. The Reserve forest located between Songsak and Rongjeng consist of mature Sal plantations which stand elegant and tall, spreading an eternal canopy of emerald green over vast areas with very little undergrowth except their smooth, tall trunks which look like pillars set to uphold and bear the weighty canopy of Sal foliage, above.

On the periphery of the Reserve Forest, at Darugiri, is the century old Darugiri forest Rest House, still maintained in its original state of simple rustic opulence, yet enough to meet the requirement of officials and visitors who frequent the place in search of all things natural that a mature Reserve Forest can offer.

The Darugiri Reserve Forest-a naturalists’ paradise, to be sure.

51minutes East

The present day Jaintia Hills District is but a remnant of the erstwhile Jaintia Kingdom which had been subjected to repeated divisions and partitions since the advent of the British in the North Eastern region and immediately after India's Independence.

Being one of the oldest states in the region, it was mentioned in the Puranic and Tantrik literature.

It was computed by scholars that U Chyngklein Am, the eldest son of KA Li Dakha and U Luh Ryndi, ruled the Jaintia state in the 3rd century B.C.

This district has one of the largest collections of ancient monolith, menhirs and tomb stones.

After Meghalaya became a full-fledged state in 1972, the Khasi and the Jaintia Hills were constituted under one administrative unit but later it was change. The District Council was introduced in the hill areas in 1952. Khasi and Jaintia Hills were put together but a separate District Council was created for each of these tribal groups.
