Teamwork

ERIC KPESESE

RoleFinance Manager, Ghana

Outside work“I like football and also spending time with my family. We go out, watch movies, watch football.”

Puma Energy in three wordsHard workingTransparentFocused

You have to have good teamwork. We do the work together, and we achieve the results together, and we all become happy.

1

Attracted by the challengeI’m Finance Manager for all the Puma Energy Ghana entities. I joined Puma Energy to take a more challenging job, because I am a young and ambitious guy. I need challenges in work. It is great to be part of such a fantastic, fast-growing entity like Puma Energy.

Getting great results togetherYou have to have good teamwork. Even though I have quite a number of people under me, I don’t just read out and give instructions. We do the work together, and we achieve the results together – that makes us happy as a team.

I compare Puma Energy with the other multinational companies here in Ghana. I must say, Puma Energy is very focused.

Puma Energy has a challenging and competitive working environment – you always learn new ideas.

It is a very good working atmosphere. For instance, we used to work in a very well designed container office, but we have every work tool we need to work with and that makes everyone happy. It is a well organised and friendly environment. We have since moved to a beautiful new office in the centre of Accra with very great ambience.

Achieving much moreOur focus remains on performance and growth and our service to customers. It’s a very active Puma Energy take on teamwork. Because we can actually get more done more effectively, more quickly together than we would ever do individually.

To be successful in Puma Energy you need to be very hard working, you need to be direct in your dealings, in your work. You need to be focused, and you need to be committed.

Always more room for improvementWhen I joined I told myself, there is no way I’m going to leave Puma Energy without leaving a legacy. My ambition is to reach a level where my professional experience can contribute significantly towards the success of the group as a whole. I always look for ways to perform higher because I know there’s always more room for improvement.

All companies say teamwork’s important. But how many actually go about making it work really well? We strip away all the stuff that gets in the way of working brilliantly together and add just what you need to oil the wheels and turbocharge the performance of teams. So you can live up to your potential – and promise – to be an excellent team player.

SHARON WHITE

RoleBusiness and Programme Manager, Australia

Outside work“I love boot camp, reading, and spending time with my family and also my friends.”

Puma Energy in three wordsDynamicChallengingEncouraging

Brave new ideasMy current role is the Business and Programmes Manager based here in Brisbane. It’s definitely challenging at times, but it’s also fun and rewarding.

To succeed you’ve got to be someone who is not afraid to think outside the square. You also need to be prepared to back your idea and accept the outcome too, because not everything works, not every idea is successful. So, you’ve got to be prepared to accept the successes with the failures and not be afraid to also continue to put new ideas forward.

Exploring new opportunitiesPuma Energy is very open to exploring new opportunities. To me it means progress and innovation. So, it’s being prepared to look at new ways of doing things. Just because it’s always been done this way doesn’t make it right.

You’ve got to keep your mind open and try not to prejudge the value of what that change will bring. As the saying goes, if it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.

Change brings opportunity. If we want to stay ahead of the game we need to be prepared to look at how we can do things differently and provide a reason for customers to choose Puma Energy over the others.

When something goes wrong it’s not about who is to blame, but rather, how can we resolve it and ensure we don’t go and make the same mistake again. It’s about learning.

Faster, faster, fasterIt’s about improvement at pace. Faster, faster, faster. We’re trying to be a business that can adapt easily and to be able to do that. I think everyone needs to be able to work at a pace without compromising quality.

Openness for change2

To me it means progress and innovation. So, it’s being prepared to look at new ways of doing things.

34 Puma Energy People Brochure

It can be a big leap forward or a small step in the right direction – constant improvement fuels our rapid growth and ongoing success. The spark for this improvement is our openness for change. It’s a key characteristic of our restless pioneering spirit.

Page 37: H U R PEOPLEMarine systems We receive and deliver oil products through a number of marine facilities. We have also developed a strong competence in marine infrastructure and operations

Exceeding expectationsI joined Puma Energy because I was promised exposure to a multicultural, entrepreneurial environment, continuous growth while developing and working with the most talented, experienced, energetic and passionate people. The promise has exceeded my expectations and now I can say without a doubt I’ve made my best professional decision so far in joining Puma Energy.

When I describe working at Puma Energy to others I often use the words fast-growing, dynamic, a speed-to-action company focused on excellent results through its most important asset – its people!

Always looking to stay aheadWhat kind of person succeeds here? Those who are not afraid to take risks, who are committed to go above and beyond objectives; those with strategic and entrepreneurial thinking who are always looking to be one or two steps ahead of the competition.

The Puma Energy difference is all about its determination to succeed – fast growing and quick decision-making. It’s a company that seeks opportunities and goes for it, trusting and empowering the people who work here.

For me, people management means having an authentic, personal, one-on-one connection with the people you lead. It is about creating a new mould, being straightforward, communicating clearly and establishing a bond with those you work with.

Nurturing strengthsWe demonstrate this when we help people find their strengths and the skills to make them successful at their jobs, and when we help them improve their areas of opportunity.

Through the right people management we create individual success stories that contribute positively to the company’s bottom line.

Fast-pacedPuma Energy is fast-paced, so I need to make quick decisions. If I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do, I immediately need to escalate the issue and let the necessary people know what is going on. So, there is a high expectation from Puma Energy and they also help you.

All accountableIn operations, the scope is wide – we deal with safety, with the environment, with customers, the transporters and most important of all, we are managing our stock – so we need to make sure we are all accountable in whatever we are doing. We owe it to the company and to the communities surrounding us. We need to make sure we don’t have any incidents that will impact negatively on our neighbours and people on the road.

IntegrityIntegrity is key. So, for example, you need to make sure you check everything you sign to make sure it is correct.

In operations, it’s not business as usual – every day is different. Maybe equipment needs to be sorted out that day, or you need to go and do a risk assessment because of a non-routine job in the terminal. So for you to succeed in Puma Energy you need to be consistent every day and make timely follow-ups and reports.

No surprisesPuma Energy hates surprises. So, if you’re thinking you might encounter a problem, you need to make people aware and communicate quickly. But if you’re bringing surprises every day, you cannot survive in this environment, so you need to communicate clearly and be accountable at each point.

Accountability runs throughout our business. From the fine detail of day-to-day operations to long-term strategic decisions – we put our name to our choices and actions, signing up to the performance, risks and results.

Embracing challengesI joined Puma Energy to help the growth of the company, to embrace new challenges, to cope with new difficulties and to try to successfully overcome them.

For myself, for Puma Energy and for Angola, I want growth based on merit. I want to help Puma Energy grow, improve the conditions of our community and be happy while doing my job.

I also intend to became part of a worldwide team, make a successful career and never stop learning.

Enjoyably intenseWorking at Puma Energy is intense, aggressive and enjoyable, with no borders. We are always going beyond.

Puma Energy is different for not fearing to take risks, for assuming the lead and entering new markets and business sectors.

The opportunities are endless and worldwide. We are always adding new responsibilities and challenges. It’s increasingly demanding.

Stronger togetherMy strength comes from my team, from our daily work, from helping them grow and enjoy what they do. I believe in a culture of sharing and learning with each other to accomplish our goals.

I believe that our knowledge, our will and our commitment have to be employed in good causes. This is the way for a better world.

Transparency should be the motto in every situation. Transparency to foster a culture of integrity and proactivity. Transparency to make room for errors to be quickly sensed and corrected. Transparency so that the best practices are disseminated and valued.

Open, honest, clear, straightforward. Say what you’re going to do, and do it. No bull, just business. It’s a key part of how we cut through and get on with things – from setting up a new business to investing in a local community.

A good fitI’m General Manager for Puma Energy Panama and Colombia. I joined because it seemed like a good fit from the beginning – practical and results-oriented.

My ambition is to continue to grow Puma Energy in Panama until we are participating in all profitable lines of business in the country. What’s it like working at Puma Energy? It’s the closest thing to managing your own business.

Practical empowermentPuma Energy is special because it promotes innovation and empowerment in a practical way. To succeed you need to be results-oriented, a clear communicator, resourceful. There are many opportunities for the right people. When you think about how to grow deeper and wider and make a list, you’ll see.

In terms of recognition, the main one for me is your own personal pride in accomplishing the goals you set out to accomplish. To the extent you ask for support, you will get it – make sure to reach out and create your own network.

Capturing opportunitiesFor me, an entrepreneurial mindset pushes you to constantly look for business opportunities before most people do and follow up to capture them. We demonstrate entrepreneurship by being alert and able to identify business opportunities arising from a changing market environment and promoting idea generation from our team. An initial idea which may not seem like a good one generally sparks a variation of the idea, which could represent the next big business venture.

Keep looking for moreWhy is entrepreneurship so important for Puma Energy? Entrepreneurship is what keeps people looking for more and thus makes Puma Energy a sustainable growing business. This differentiates us from most competitors and makes us a partner and supplier of choice for our customers.

Not just looking for new opportunities but making the most of them, not simply coming up with a great idea but putting it into action – fast. Entrepreneurship is critical to our ongoing growth and success. We look for the entrepreneurial spark in all our recruits and encourage it across the business. So if you’d like to join a band of 7,000+ entrepreneurs, we’re all ears.

Incredibly dynamicI'm the General Manager for the Southern Africa sub-region. I joined Puma Energy from BP. I could see that Puma Energy was a dynamic company – lots of responsibility and accountability, aggressive growth. And I wanted to be part of that.

Decisions are made extremely fast, and I think that's partly due to the flat structure, but also the attitude is very much outcome focused. Everybody wants to get things done.

Culture of speedWe're a very integrated company. It's not a formal company in the way that we communicate. I think that leads to our culture of speed of decision-making and being really focused on delivering results.

I think a key difference is that all the companies see the opportunity, while Puma Energy is liable to react to them faster. And we're also flexible – we're open to new ideas and able to respond  quicker than our competitors.

This is my third role in Puma Energy in under two years. Each role has been progressively quite a bit bigger. With this business, the opportunities are huge.

All about the results At Puma Energy, inputs mean nothing – it's the result that matters. We keep people inspired by always looking to measurable indicators. For me, commercial drive is really just the horsepower that you need to continually push for outcomes as opposed to inputs.

I think the people that thrive in the company enjoy working in an environment where you're challenged every day. You're challenged to do more, and to push harder to achieve more, often with less.

Our commercial drive and focus on results keeps us grounded as we constantly explore new ways to improve and grow. A great new idea, for example, is only truly great if it translates into strong numbers. It concentrates our minds and encourages us to make quick decisions based on the facts and the real benefits. At Puma Energy we’re all expected to share in this sound commercial sense.

Effective networks8

From personal contacts to simple connections, from strong and lasting partnerships to simple solutions – effective networks are a key part of our business. They help us do more with less and get more done.

Moving into the AmericasClose to a year ago I moved to the region to take care of the business development of our Americas operations. I’m leading that initiative.

The power of strong networksEffective networks for me are very important. Even though I have been out of the region for more than 15 years, I have maintained certain networks in my home country and at the same time have built networks inside and outside the company in other countries.

Now, coming back, I can use my networks to implement the goals the company has in the Americas. Having the right contacts, being able to approach and to have a close network with all of these people, makes it easier to do business.

An easy changeI decided to join Puma Energy because it’s very agile. It’s a very quick result-driven company with a lot of growth, especially in the last years. It was an easy change because I’m used to moving and executing projects quickly.

Seeing the resultsIt is a very demanding company, very results-oriented. But because of that, you are able to see the results quickly. You are able to see what you are developing on the way. When the company sees results and sees that you are performing and delivering, it will give you more responsibility and more trust.

The company is generally very ambitious. It has a lot of potential, a lot of drive, so I think there are a lot of opportunities, not only in the Americas but also in many markets. As we grow, we need to maintain the DNA of the company across the organisation by hiring people with the same drive, the same ambitions, the same targets, so we can maintain that momentum.

Become the bestPuma Energy gave me the opportunity to start with them from scratch. They promised me it was a winning company and invited me to be part of it. That's why I joined Puma Energy.

This is for me a different company, because everybody is committed to achieve something, so it's really challenging. You want to become the best here.

The first thing I saw when I came here was a lot of young people trying to do everything to make the company succeed. You've also got people with more experience, but you cannot differentiate between the young people and these guys, because they are all giving the same kind of effort for the company.

From zeroGoing back two years, Puma Energy had no presence here in the country. We started from scratch, from zero. It was a lot of work for a few people here locally.

Not for zeroTo inspire and motivate people, you show them how great the company will become – show them that their effort is not for zero. This is how we built a willing team, and we are now one of the top 10 biggest companies in Mozambique.

Ever betterYou get financial recognition, which is good. But better than that, you have people saying to you that you did a great job, but you can do more. So they recognise my contribution and they expect more than me. That's why I'm fighting today to do better than I did yesterday.

The best thing is we just don't look for the greatness of the past. We are looking for the greatness of the future.

We’re wholeheartedly committed to moving forward at pace, so being energising and inspiring is a critical and natural key competence for us. One of the ways we inspire each other is by painting a vision of the future and rooting it in our everyday business. It’s about encouraging us all to continue achieving a great deal very quickly.

Pride in Puma EnergyI started with Puma Energy when they officially entered into the Myanmar market last year. I’m proud to be part of developing the Myanmar oil and gas midstream and downstream market by working in Puma Energy.

A high team spiritIt is a dynamic and responsive company. They give flexibility in roles and I have found everybody is helpful whether he or she comes from a different part of the business or the world. Everyone works with a high team spirit and everybody is ready to help each other.

Puma Energy gives room for career development and they share information. They listen to employee ideas and let employees contribute to decisions. This encourages people to take ownership of their own job. Proactive people with creative minds are successful at Puma Energy. You have to be able to learn new things quickly, to be flexible to changes.

Productive customer relationsCustomers and their needs are a primary focus. It’s about developing and sustaining productive customer relations. It is not only outside customers, but also inside – my three co-workers, supervisors, subordinates are all my customers.

To deliver the customer orientation we have to understand very well what their needs are and what they want from us, and we have to respond creatively and effectively to them.
