As part of a 1935 initiative to recognize and celebrate the gift that catechists give to their parish communities by volunteering their time for the education of children, the Church began what we know today as “Catechetical Sunday.” Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all Catholics to rededicate themselves to the mission of handing down the faith and being a witness to
the Gospel as a community of faith. This day provides an opportunity to celebrate those who do the important work, and an opportunity for all of us Catholics to consider ways we are witnesses for Jesus Christ ourselves.
Each Catechetical Sunday, we celebrate catechists. All those who teach the Catholic faith and share the Church’s teachings are catechists. The word catechesis is from a Greek word meaning “to echo.” All those who teach in the Church’s name and about Jesus by the way they live are catechists. Parents and guardians are also catechists; they are the first and primary teachers of the faith for their children.
In May of 2021, Pope Francis established the lay ministry of the catechist in the Catholic Church in his apostolic letter Antiquum Ministerium. This document officially declared that catechists are to be recognized as lay ministers in the Catholic Church and are due the training and support they need to be successful in their ministry.
On this Catechetical Sunday, we come together as both a parish and Church community to acknowledge the dedication of those who serve as catechists in our parish family.
Each year, Catechetical Sunday has a unique theme. The 2021 Catechetical Sunday theme focuses on healing: “Say the Word and My Soul Shall be Healed.” This year’s theme acknowledges a world in need of healing. The Church shares Jesus’ special concern with those who are sick and suffering.
As our parish community celebrates Catechetical Sunday and commissions catechists for their ministry, as they open eyes and souls to God’s healing, we acknowledge that this year’s Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity to recognize, reflect on, support, and celebrate the ministry of catechists—all those who teach the Catholic faith and share the Church’s teachings—in a world in need of physical, spiritual, and emotional healing. The 2021 theme “Say the Word and My Soul Shall be Healed” reminds us of the healing offered by Jesus in the Eucharist.

Parish News & EventsAll three Sandusky Catholic Parishes will begin accepting 2022 Mass Intentions on Monday, October 4th at 9 AM. All Parish Offices will be closed from 9 AM- 12 Noon that day. In-person reservations will be taken at the Gathering Spaces of each parish.
No email or phone requests will be accepted on or prior to October 4th. All email or phone requests will be accepted any time AFTER Tuesday, October 5. Mass offerings can be delivered to the parish office where your Mass intention is held.
Because Church law limits the number of intentions for each Mass, and because there are a considerable number of individuals who would like to have Masses offered for themselves and/or their loved ones, each individual will be limited to a maximum of six (6) Mass offerings per year. If additional Masses are available after January 1, 2022, individuals may make additional offerings for Masses at that time. As in previous years, no offerings will be accepted for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and All Souls Day. On these weekends, all Masses will be offered for “All Mothers,” “All Fathers,” or “All Souls of the Faithful Departed.” Also, due to a number of events this coming year that will take all three of our parish priests out of town, a few weekday Masses have been canceled. Please contact the parish office for more details.

The Catholic Parishes of Sandusky are in search of 5 Catholic, registered parishionerswho would be willing to occasionally help out with wedding celebrations. The idealperson would be available 3-4 times each year to assist the priest or deacon at weddings. This would include helping to set-up for the wedding, being available to families justprior to the wedding in case they have a question or need something, opening doors forthe bridal party, and helping put things away after the wedding. No public speakinginvolved! This is a paid position that would typically take a total of 3-4 hours perwedding (1 hour the evening before; 2-3 hours the day of the wedding).
If you think you are interested, please call or email Fr. Hoyles for more information(419-625-7500 or [email protected]).
Wedding Coordinators Needed
CouncilPARISH PASTORAL
Would you like to see your parish become more vibrant? Do you have ideas on how our parishes, individually and collectively, can improve the culture of prayer, healthy teamwork and active discipleship? We need your help!
Father Hoyles is starting the process to rebuild our Parish Pastoral Council. Five individuals--from a variety of generations--are needed from each parish to help him do this. These individuals will meet four (4) times each year to discuss important pastoral issues that will help our parishes to thrive today and in the decades to come.
Ideal candidates will be willing to give honest, direct and vital guidance to Father Hoyles. They’ll know and be actively involved in the life of our parishes, and be passionate about promoting the Catholic faith, and not be afraid to tackle challenging issues that need our attention.
We hope to have the council formed and have a first meeting in November 2021!
If this sounds like something God is calling you to, or if you know someone whom you think would be great for the new Pastoral Council, please email Father Hoyles at [email protected] or give him a call at (419) 625-7500.
