Coosa River Fish GuideCoosa Riverkeeper, along with Alabama Rivers

Alliance, has put together an exciting multi-facetedprogram titled Fish Guide. The goal of the programis to help provide more easily accessible informa-tion in a variety of formats to give citizens — espe-cially subsistence fisherman and families – access tolearn about the health warnings contained in ourfish consumption advisories. Every river in Alabama has fish consumption ad-

visories, with more than 100 statewide. Unfortu-nately, many folks don’t know where the fish aresafe to eat and how to understand these advisories.Coosa Riverkeeper and Alabama River Alliancewant to provide the 411 on dangerous contaminatesthat plague many of our watersheds. A few exam-ples include:

PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) are chemi-cals banned by Congress in 1979, but becausethey don’t break down in nature, we are still liv-ing with their toxic legacy. PCBs build up in thefatty tissue of the fish, so you CAN reduce yourexposure by cleaning and cooking your fish toreduce your exposure to PCBs.Methylmercury is a highly toxic organic com-

pound of mercury. Species of fish that are olderand higher on the food chain tend to have higherconcentrations of this pollutant than others. When mercury is present in your food, it cancause significant damage over time to the nervous system and kidneys.Currently, there are multiple fish consumption advisories on various water bodies of the Coosa River. I

am proud to report that Beautiful Lake Jordan currently has none, but be proactive and know before youfeed your family. You have to fish for answers to understand the advisories themselves. CALL before youCAST: 1-844-219-RISK (7475) toll-free. Dial [1] to hear all known advisories on the Coosa River.

The Alabama Rivers Alliance advocatesfor a comprehensive sustainable watermanagement plan to protect our state’s

natural resources, specifically our132,000+ miles of rivers and streams.

Coosa Riverkeeper is a citizen-based river con-servation group with a mission to protect, re-store and promote the Coosa River and itstributaries in Alabama. We patrol the waters, educate the public, and advocate for the river.

Did you know there are 34 fish consumption advisories on the Coosa in Alabama as a result of PCB and

mercury contamination? Though 91% of fish-ermen would heed these advisories, only 6%know what they are. The Coosa River Fish

Guide offers all kinds of great information likethis that every angler should know!

Sommer and Pegue Wins 2017 Alabama Bass Trail – Lake Jordan

For the second time in history, Lake Jordan, hasserved as the venue for the kickoff of the AlabamaBass Trail (ABS) Southern Division’s season. Thisteam-style tournament series will be held oneleven of the lakes of the Alabama Bass Trail with

the championship tournament concluding the serieson October 6-7, 2017 on Logan Martin Lake. Sanctioned by BASS (Bass Anglers Sportsman Society), the Ala-

bama Bass Trail Tournament Series contains two divisions: Northand South. Each division is made up of five tournaments on fivedifferent lakes. The maximum number of boats for each entry is225 and teams must fish in all five tournaments in their respectivedivisions. New in 2017, the Championship will include up to 180

boats. The 180 boats will be comprised of the 10 divisional tourna-ment winning teams, top 75 teams in points from both divisions that fished all five events in their respec-tive divisions, along with the top 10 student boats, top five college teams, and the top five couple teamscollectively from both divisions that fished all five events in their respective divisions. The Southern Division Kickoff on Lake Jordan on February 18, 2017 featured a record, full field of

225 boats. With what is believed to be the smallest fishery on the entire Alabama Bass Trail schedule, Lake Jor-

dan experienced an amount of fishing pressure the lake had likely never seen. Couple the pressure ofthe amount of competition with the unseasonably warm temperatures that gave way to a cold front, thefishing was not expected to be stellar. The team of Erick Sommers and Tommy Pegues managed to prove that assumption wrong. The pair of anglers from nearby Deatsville and Montgomery managed to produce an incredible mixed

bag, 24.95 pound limit of Lake Jordan bass that earned them their first ABT victory that came with a$10,000 first prize; as well as, a $7,000 Phoenix Boats First Flight bonus prize. The winning duo reported having the bulk of their limit by 10:00 in the morning and then their final

fish, a 5.22 pound largemouth bass, put them well in the lead. Stan Hallman and Steve Thrash from Autaugaville and Prattville respectively took home second prize

honors with a 19.76 pound limit and a cash prize of $5,000. Third place went to Brad Edwards andAustin Nelson with a total limit of 19.75 pounds.Lake Jordan HOBO’s would like to send a big congratulation to all the talented anglers that partici-

pated in this event. And please feel free to come back and enjoy Beautiful Lake Jordan anytime.

We have had a mild winter, letting a number ofus enjoy our outdoor lake life already this year. Ihave already seen many out fishing and enjoyingtheir boats and even a large number jet skiersbraving the chilly water temperatures of February. But it won’t be long before swimmers will take toour waters and our lake population will triple. Bemindful that with increased activity on our lake,we need to remember the many water safety tipsthat have been shared in our past newsletters.Let’s make 2017 our safest year yet on BeautifulLake Jordan. Not only should we strive for a safe lake, but a

clean one as well. Lake Jordan residents takepride in being one of the top lakes in Alabama inwater quality. If you would like to contribute toour clean water efforts, consider joining our WaterWatch Committee chaired by Ms. Judy May.Water monitors receive free education from ex-perts at Auburn University and enjoy the knowl-edge that their time and attention to our lake todaywill pay off for generations to come. Speaking of a clean lake, don’t forget our an-

nual Lake Jordan HOBO Clean-Up scheduled forSaturday, April 22, 2017. This year’s clean-up willstart promptly at 8:00 AM from Bonner’s Point and

able bodies and boats are needed. Homeownersand visitors alike benefit from this worthwhile ef-fort and we encourage everyone’s participation. And before you know it, summer will be upon

us. Fireworks and 4th of July fun are synonymouswith Beautiful Lake Jordan; however, funds areneeded now to insure we will even have a showthis year. If you have not already done so, pleaseconsider donating to this wonderful tradition. Do-nations can be sent to Lake Jordan HOBO Associ-ation, P.O. Box 431, Wetumpka, Alabama36092-0431. Wishing you all sunny days on the lake!

Did You Know?Lake Jordan is a reservoir with a water surface of 6,800 acres, shoreline of approximately 188 miles, a

total length of 18 miles and a maximum storage volume of 236,200 acre-feet.Owned and operated by Alabama Power, the lake was impounded December 31, 1928 and named

for the mother of Reuben and Sidney Mitchell, who were instrumental in the construction of MitchellDam, also on the Coosa River and also run by Alabama Power. Jordan Dam is a concrete arch dam, 125feet high, built for hydropower generation with a 100 megawatt generating capacity. Beautiful Lake Jordan is known as a fishing haven with fishing opportunities for largemouth bass,

spotted bass, bluegill and other sunfish, crappie, catfish, striped bass, hybrid and white bass. So if youhaven’t tried your luck lately, grab a pole and enjoy your bounty!

Lake Jordan Home Owners and Boat Owners Association (HOBOs)Working to Prove Navigation Assistance and Aiding Safety on Lake JordanThose of us who go boating on an unfamiliar

lake or river often find it difficult to identify spe-cific locations on the lake when navigating to aresidence or landing. Recently, the Lake JordanHOBO Association began an effort to assist withthis problem and one that will provide emergencyresponders some much needed assistance whentrying to determine the location of a boating acci-dent or other incidents on the lake. Lake JordanHOBO’s slough naming project will give namesand install signs identifying major sloughs andcoves on our lake. The HOBO membership approved this project

in mid-2016 that resulted in our Area Representa-tives working with their neighbors to name thoseinlets. They identified 52 locations where signsshould be placed to aid residents, emergency re-sponders and other boaters to locate sites on thelake from Walter Bouldin Dam allthe way up the river into CoosaCounty south of Lake Mitchelldam. The signs and metal posts have

been procured and installationhas begun with expected comple-tion of all sign placements by

April 1st. The signs are mounted at the entranceto the cove or slough so there they are viewableby responders and boaters coming from any of thethree major boat launches on Lake Jordan.Jeff Royal, Lake Jordan HOBO Vice President, is

heading the project and expects to have maps ofthe lake/reservoir with sign locations printed fordistribution during March. Royal indicated themaps will be provided to the Sheriff’s Department,911 Dispatch, Alabama Marine Police, local firedepartments servicing the lake areas and to rescueorganizations that often perform critical lifesavingoperations on the water. Copies of the map willalso be made available to each member of theHOBO organization.HOBO Area Representatives are now urging

residents to know the name of the slough or covein which they live and are encouraging them to

make their family members awareof how to report emergencies accu-rately.Residents and visitors to Lake Jor-

dan can obtain additional informa-tion concerning the lake and thissafety project by visiting:www.lakejordanhobo.org.

#weloveourlakelife The WHO, WHAT & WHEN of Beautiful Lake Jordan:

spotlight Skier’s Up!

Dad loading the lawn chairs and cooler in thecar, Mom putting the last touches on the picniclunch, the kids running about when they should begetting in the car and the dog on the loose; all on ahot summers day in central Alabama circa 1975.This could have easily been the scene repeatedmany times over the years aseveryone prepared to go to JonesCorner to see one of the manyski shows put together by the SkiClub at Lake Jordan. The Ski Club, that mystical

floating building with its oddroof line as its landmark and theplace where well over a thou-sand people of all ages havelearned to ski over the last 57years. The club itself was startedby Mr. Fred Marquette in 1960and found its humble beginnings by way of hisfriends desire to learn to ski coupled with his abilityand patience to teach them. In the early days every-one would gather, bring a covered dish and taketurns getting behind the boat. Over the years thosefriends would bring other friends and people wouldeventually be referred to the Ski Club as the quintes-sential place to go to learn to ski. Eventually itwould blossom from teaching others to ski to an ac-tual club with monthly meetings, instruction time, holiday gatherings and of course lots of skiing. I sat down with Mr. Fred recently and found out

more about the Ski Club itself. He had many storiesto tell, fascinating stories, funny stories; a true his-tory of the club itself. I learned that there is muchmore to the Ski Club than just a building, a guy anda boat. Such as those free ski shows that he and hisgroup organized together and then presented to

anyone that cared to watchalong the shoreline nearJones Corner. At the time, water skiing around theworld was in its heyday andfor Lake Jordan it was no dif-ferent. There was a mystiqueabout being able to ski, doingtricks and performing for oth-ers. The shows allowed thosethat Mr. Fred had taught toshow off their skills with pyr-amids, tricks and costumed

themed skiers hamming it up for the crowd that wasgathered.I asked about the Ski Club building, the floating

building moored at Mr. Fred’s house and the center-piece of the club itself. The building started out as agas station on the north end of the lake in the early50’s and was donated to the YMCA once the busi-ness failed to be profitable. The building sat atCamp Chandler for a time with no real purpose inmind, so Mr. Fred acquired the building and turnedit into the equipment storage area for the up andcoming Ski Club. On the day of my visit, I saw the

building from above for the firsttime and noticed that the oddroof line is actually a work ofart. The shape of the roof fromabove is an arrow while fromthe water, you see the wingedsides. This design was to mimicthe body style of the cars fromthe day with their high fins onthe back. When you take in thebuilding from all sides, it reallyis a piece of art deco. There has been a lot ofHome still today to the Ski Club building.

Water Skiing is a very popular sport onLake Jordan then and now.

equipment over the yearsthat the Ski Club bought to offerits members. As you can well imagine there were var-ious sizes and styles of skis, the many flags held byskiers during those patriotic shows and the copiousamounts of rope it took to pull pyramids on the water;but the one piece that stood out over the years was akite. Yes, a floating kite that when described is basi-cally a hand glider tied behind a boat. Hours uponhours were dedicated teaching those who wanted tomaster flying the kite behind the boat and master itthey did, all without injury despite the danger it pre-sented. Then there were the boats, a new one everyyear between 1970 and 2003 and not just any skiboat. They were only the best Chris Craft, CorrectCraft and Ski Nautique’s on the market. I asked Mr.Fred if he had to charge a lot for lessons to keep up todate with the equipment and he said “I never chargedanyone to teach them to ski, it just wouldn’t havebeen the right thing to do”. He also informed me thatat 98 years of age he no longer skis; however, he stillenjoys driving his boat for others to do so. I found out that the youngest person who learned

to ski at the Lake Jordan Ski Club was a 6 year oldgirl. The oldest? Well, that would have been justabout three years ago and she was in her late 50’s.Many people came to know the ski club in manyways; including one of the most memorable onesthat found themselves at the Ski Club by way of thewater patrol. During a day of attempting to learn toski, a husband and wife were directed by the waterpatrol to the winged building and Mr. Fred. In shortorder, he had taught her to ski and she was on herway.Lake Jordan Ski Club, a fixture on our beautiful

lake for over 5 decades where thousands have stoodbehind a boat for the first time, often the source ofgood times, great shows and patriotic displays.

Happy Skiing!

Lake Jordan’s History“Let there be light,” the Ala-bama Power Company said, and there was light. But it didnot shine everywhere. RuralAlabama, where populationand houses were few and farbetween, was still in dark-ness. The roads were little

more than washed out ruts and wagontrails, and the people that lived in these areasseemed forgotten as time went by. The most com-mon greeting of the day was a question, “Haveyou got juice yet?” (Juice was slang for electricity),but only a few of the farmers could answer, “Yes.”Saturday, May 11, 1935

was just another spring dayin the lives of millions ofAmericans. This was theyear of the chain letter —Admiral Byrd returnedfrom another trip to Antarc-tica — people were learn-ing to dance the rumba —“I Got Plenty of Nothing”was the popular song —

James J. Braddock outpointed Max Baer to win theheavy weight boxing crown — and Detroit (AL)beat Chicago (NL) to win the world series. Thosethat had electricity probably thought everybodydid, but the out-of-the-way, remote homes in Ala-bama still used kerosene lamps to light the way.Franklin D. Roosevelt had one more task to per-form that morning before going fishing at theWoodmont Rod and Gun Club in the Blue RidgeMountains. His one last task was to sign the exec-utive order 7037, creating an agency to begin aprogram or rural society. When his name ap-peared on that order, only one farmer in ten hadelectricity. Today, over 1,000 Rural Electric Coop-eratives provide electricity for more than 25 mil-lion people in three fourths of the United States.

The new agency was underway— it would be known as the “REA”to its many users. ...

This is a short part of the pam-plet.

Come to a quarterly meetingand find out how to get the rest of the story complied by Barbara Dreyer.

Missing Hazard Marker BuoysHOBO Safety Charman, Dave Kowalski, has been working with the marine police to get the hazard

buoys fixed. This is one of the many safety projects on our lake he looks after. The Alabama Marine Patrol have started work to

replace hazard buoys in Area 1 between the stateramp and Camp Chandler; as well as, two other loca-tions in Weoka Creek. Take extra caution in theseareas that are only 3-4 feet deep with stumps justbelow the water line. The water patrol hopes to havetheir work complete by mid-March, just in time for“lake season” to kick into high gear. The HOBO Association recognizes that this is a

costly and labor intensive project and we appreciatetheir efforts to keep Lake Jordan safe.

The Signs (with reflectivecoating) have been received and the area reps are in theprocess of getting them installed at the most commonentry points of each named slough. Alabama-Coosa-Tallapoosa (ACT) River Basin ProjectRiver Basin Compact - Dave White gave an update brief-ing on the status of court cases involving both theApalachicola Chattahoochee-Flint (ACF) and our Ala-bama-Coosa-Tallapoosa (ACT) River basins. The ACF is-sues involve Florida claiming that Georgia consumesexcessive water which then impacts Florida and theirneed for water to support industry, farming and fisheryactivities. Special Master Ralph Lancaster heard argu-ments from both states in a hearing last month and is ex-pected to give his ruling later this month.

The other ACT legal case involves Alabama and theCorps of Engineers. That case is based on a suit Alabamafiled against the Corps because they believe the manualproduced by the Corp in May 2015 is faulty as it impactsthe amount of water flowing in our basin. Alabama(ADECA) is awaiting action by Judge Emmet Sullivan (Dis-trict Court of Columbia - DC) to issue a briefing schedulewhich is expected in the next few weeks. We can expect

significant media coverage as the hearings are conducted. The drought conditions have significantly been cor-

rected with recent rainfall in Alabama and the Southeast. The only remaining areas with slight deficiencies are innorth and northeast Alabama. The La Nina conditions thatwere anticipated in the South have not materializes sohopefully the rainfall amount will return to normal. Mem-bers can monitor the rainfall status by visiting their website at http:// water.alabama.gov and follow the links tothe Office of Water Resources.

The $50 Raffle drawing was held. Congratulations tothe winner, Tim Owen.

There being no further business, Gerald Hardy ad-journed the meeting. The next meeting will be held onMonday, April 24th, 2017 at 7:00pm (6:30 pm if youwant to eat) at Camp Chandler.
