Butter Braid Sales Reminder Thurston County 4-Hers will again have the opportunity to sell Butter Braids. What is a Butter Braid? A Butter Braid is a frozen pastry dough that you thaw, let rise, bake and frost. It is a mouth watering delicious homemade pastry. Butter Braids are available in a variety of flavors. Thurston County 4-Hers will be tak-ing orders from February 17 to March 13. Orders will be delivered to the 4-Hers on

March 24 at 5:00 p.m. at the Thurston County Extension Office. Proceeds from this fundraiser help fund 4-H activities throughout the year.

Butter Braid Sales Incentive The Thurston County 4-H Council voted to again provide you with an incentive to sell butter braids. The incentive will work like this, if we make $1500 profit we will have a drawing for two $50 gift cards to Walmart. To be eligible for the gift certificates, an individual must sell a minimum of 18 Butter Braids®, for every additional 5 sold they will have another entry in the drawing. If there is more than one person selling in your family, you will receive 1 entry into the drawing for each 18 Butter Braids® sold. For example if there are two youth selling Butter Braids® your family would receive 1 entry in the drawing for the first 18 sold and another entry for the second 18 sold and then one entry for each additional 5 sold. If your family chooses not to sell Butter Braids®, which is the only fundraiser we have for our 4-H program, we ask that you pay $50.00 per child. They will not be eligible for the gift card drawing. Re-member this is just an incentive to encourage our 4-H’es to sell more Butter Braids. Selling any number of Butter Braids®, will benefit the Thurston County 4-H program.

2015 Dakota-Thurston County 4-H Public Speaking & PSA Contest

March 19, 2015 at 7:00 pm at

Salem Lutheran Church, Dakota City

Speech Contest Rules

All speeches must be original and include 4-H as the major component of the speech.

Many speakers in the Public Speaking Contest have given speeches in other contests. This is fine; howev-

er, previous speeches may not be used verbatim for the 4-H contest. It is okay to use the same ideas

from a speech previously delivered in competition, but it must be 4-H related. Enough changes should be

made to make that speech new to the speaker and the audience. 4-H public speakers may not use an old

speech written by a sibling, other 4-H member, or anyone else.

Acknowledge the source of information used in the speech. For example, an article from a magazine may

Public Service Announcement (PSA) Contest Rules

All PSA’s are 60 seconds in length. The state theme for the 2015 Public Service Announcement is "4-H Grows…". All radio PSA’s must promote 4-H and be general enough to be used anywhere in Nebraska at any time

of the year. All 4-H PSA’s must include the following tag line within the last ten seconds of the PSA: “Learn more

about the Nebraska Extension 4-H Youth Development Program at 4h.unl.edu.” The tag line is includ-ed in the 60 second time limit.

Sound effects and public domain music may be used. Copyrighted material may not be use. All PSA’s must be the original work of the presenter. Contestants may not use PSA’s written and provid-

ed by the state or national staff. No team PSA’s are allowed. Radio PSA’s will be submitted on CD along with the PSA text. Please use .wav or .mp3 audio formats when recording your PSA

How does the PSA contest work?

For this contest, participants may use manuscripts of their presentation. Pre-recorded PSA’s or live

presentation can be used at the county contest. For live presentations contestants will sit behind the judge

when making their presentation. This is to ensure that no judging is made on visual presentation. The con-

testant is judged only on content and oral presentation. Contestants may use sound effects and/or back-

ground music; however the participant is responsible for bringing all necessary equipment to the con-

test and is able to operate the equipment without assistance.
