APRIL 2017

Health Information Privacy and Security Week (March 26-April 1)Health Information is vital to the delivery of care and so is keeping it secure. Health Information Management and Technology Professionals work diligently throughout the year to ensure valuable information is only available to those who needs it and no one else. It’s more than a commitment, it’s a mission, and it’s essential to maintaining the trust of people and communities we serve. This is a cause we celebrate and reconfirm each year during Health Information Privacy and Security week.

“Protecting Information-It’s a Top Priority” is the selected theme for the 2011 celebration. The message will be on prominent display March 26-April 1, as we reassure the public their information is in safe, reliable hands.

Equally important, this week is a time to recognize and reward the hard work and tireless commitment of valued staff member who help you keep health information private and protected throughout the year.

Arbor DayArbor Day is a nationally recognized observance that encourages tree planting and care. National Arbor Day in the U.S. officially falls on the last Friday in April. However, Arbor Day celebrations are held nationwide on dates determined by the best tree planting times in each area. Observances take place as early as January and February in some southern states, and as late in May in more northern locations.

VolunteersAs you all know, it’s that time of year again. As I write this note, I want to thank all of the volunteers in the past for their hard work, dedication, and time put forth here. April is National Volunteer Month. We would love you to come and join us April 12 in the Classroom. Please, phone the Activities Department at (864) 675-6421 and let us know if you will be willing to help us and our residents out. Thank you.

Wireless InternetWe have wireless Internet throughout the facility. You can access the Internet from your laptop in your family member’s room. See the receptionist for log-in information.

We have a computer with Internet access available for our residents only. Stop by for details and rules regarding its use. We’re here to help. Also, we are now able to Skype if interested please see an Activity partner.

Team Work is KeyIn the care of anyone who is ill, it is important to remember that everyone must work and communicate together for the best outcomes. Often families hold the key about residents past history that will help improve the medication selections and activities and care given. We don't always get to speak with each family member or even every nurse caring for a resident, but the team must function together to help the resident receive the best care possible. Some night sift nurses see an entirely different picture than what occurs in the mornings and afternoon hours. But we desire to give the best care possible, so let us know what has worked or not worked in the past so we can maintain high quality and the best loving care we can. If your mom or dad so better in the evenings or used to work at night maybe things need to be arranged to help their schedule better. Often our rhythm of life needs to maintain the same for better functioning.

It is important that everyone communicate and work together so each resident stays as happy and comfortable as possible.

Top 10 Nutrition Facts Submitted by: Carrie Hawkins

National Nutrition Month is April 2016

During National Nutrition Month®, the American Dietetic Association urges consumers to look beyond the myths of nutrition and focus on the facts. Remember, the theme for 2016 is Nutrition: It’s a Matter of Fact.

THE EXPERTS AT ADA HAVE IDENTIFIED THE FOLLOWING FACTS:

1. Eating right doesn’t have to be complicated. Use Mypramid.gov to develop a personalized plan for lifelong health.

2. The best nutrition advice is based on science. Before adopting any changes to your diet, be sure the information is based in scientific fact.

3. Get your food and nutrition facts from the expert: a registered dietitian. RDs are uniquely qualified to translate the science of nutrition into reliable advice you can use every day.

4. Balancing physical activity and a healthful diet is your best recipe for managing weight and promoting overall health and fitness.

5. Think nutrient-rich than “good” or “bad” foods. The majority of your food choices should be packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber and other nutrients - and lower in calories.

6. Look at the big picture: No single food or meal makes or breaks a healthful diet. Your total diet is the most important focus for healthful eating.

7. Prepare, handle and store food properly to keep you and your family safe from food-borne illness.

8. Don’t fall prey to food myths and misinformation that may harm rather than benefit your health.

9. Read food labels to get nutrition facts that help you make smart food choices quickly and easily.

10. Find the healthy fats when making food choices. By choosing polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fats, you can keep your saturated fats, trans fats and cholesterol low.

March Mission MadnessThank you for welcoming the members and friends of Advent United Methodist Church to NHCHealthCare Mauldin on Saturday, March 11. We brought in 120 blankets for your residents that we handmade that morning especially for you! It was such a pleasure making all the blankets.

March Mission Madness is a day of community service where Advent sends hundreds of people out to serve our community. This year we had over 500 people serving in Greenville! It was a blessing for our team of 30 people to serve NHC HealthCare Mauldin this year. Thank you for the opportunity!

A Reminder from Social ServicesThe Social Services Unit would like all residents and families to remember the guidelines for all gifts and goodies we may have accumulated. These guidelines are set forth by DHEC, and if any residents or families have any questions, please feel free to call or stop by and see the Social Services department. We always welcome any concerns or suggestions! Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

1. No over the counter medications 2. No medicated lip balms or rubs such as Vicks, vapor rub, or medicated chap stick. 3. Nothing that contains alcohol in the ingredients such as hairspray, deodorant, nail polish remover, and air freshener. Cepacol and Listerine are good choices as they do not contain alcohol. Alcohol is combustible and could cause a fire hazard. This also includes flammable items. 4. All sharp objects - such as nail clippers, scissors, razors, and finger nail files must be kept in a sealed plastic container that is labeled with the resident’s name and room number. 5. Pump dispenser soap only. 6. No eye drops. 7. Food that has been opened must be kept in zip lock bags or air tight containers. 8. No Benadryl cream, Aspercream, hydrogen peroxide, medicated shampoos, aftershave, Neosporin, or Destin. 9. No perfumed powders or after-shower - these can be harmful to those residents with respiratory problems or allergies.

Any items that are not allowed in resident’s rooms will be kept in the Utility Room on each unit. A staff member of NHC can obtain these items from the Utility Room.

Please, remember that we want all of our residents to be happy and comfortable, but we must go by DHEC guidelines.
