Sadly, last week, January 6, 2021, was one of the darkest days in American History. Many of us never thought that we would see a violent insurrection in the United States. We must never forget the events of January 6, 2021, yet at the same time move past them to unify our country. At the end of the day, our elected Senators and Representatives stood with our Constitution. Many of these people spoke their conscience and broke with their party. As a member of the Hampden County Bar Association, I condemn the violence and the anarchy that occurred in the "Peoples' House." I condemn those who attempted to stop the Senators and Republicans who were trying to do their jobs. I applaud the courage of those men and women of Congress who, despite their political differences, stood up and condemned those who tried to interfere with our political process. Those who were part of the violent protest should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. It is my fervent hope that we never have another day like January 6, 2021. God bless America. Here is to a better 2021! Hopefully, the vaccine will be available for everyone, and we can come out of our hibernation and enjoy the spring and summer. Although being optimistic is not in my nature, I have asked Noreen and the crew to book the Ranch for our golf tournament hopefully in late May or early Summer. Also, depending on how things play out, perhaps Judges Night may occur! Until then, we must live with our virtual world. Speaking of which, we had a great trivia night that was enjoyed by all that attended. The Real Estate Section played Jeopardy, hosted and designed by Joe Schneiderman. Joe has agreed to host Jeopardy for the entire bar association, as only Joe can do. Also, Cary Szafranski has graciously agreed to host another trivia. I hope other HCBA members will share your ideas for virtual events to carry us through the winter and spring. Virtual lawyer volunteer projects are in full swing, and WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!!! I urge you to please contact our Legal Clinic Director, Krystle Bernier, to help out! On another note, you may recall the mentoring pilot program that Travaun Bailey and Christina Turgeon worked on through the SJC Standing Committee on Lawyer Well- Being. I am happy to say that the pilot was in Hampden County! Our mentors were Jeff Morneau, Alex Hogan, Maurice Powe, Joe Pacella, Travaun Bailey, and myself.

Well, 2020 finally has gone away. I wish you all a Happy 2021!

Sadly, last week, January 6, 2021, was one of the darkest days inAmerican History. Many of us never thought that we would see aviolent insurrection in the United States. We must never forget theevents of January 6, 2021, yet at the same time move past them tounify our country. At the end of the day, our elected Senators andRepresentatives stood with our Constitution. Many of these peoplespoke their conscience and broke with their party.

As a member of the Hampden County Bar Association, I condemn the violence and the anarchy that occurred in the "Peoples' House." I condemn those whoattempted to stop the Senators and Republicans who were trying to do their jobs. Iapplaud the courage of those men and women of Congress who, despite their politicaldifferences, stood up and condemned those who tried to interfere with our politicalprocess. Those who were part of the violent protest should be prosecuted to the fullestextent of the law. It is my fervent hope that we never have another day like January 6, 2021.God bless America.

Here is to a better 2021! Hopefully, the vaccine will be available for everyone, and we cancome out of our hibernation and enjoy the spring and summer. Although being optimisticis not in my nature, I have asked Noreen and the crew to book the Ranch for our golftournament hopefully in late May or early Summer. Also, depending on how things playout, perhaps Judges Night may occur!

Until then, we must live with our virtual world. Speaking of which, we had a great trivianight that was enjoyed by all that attended. The Real Estate Section played Jeopardy, hosted and designed by Joe Schneiderman. Joe has agreed to host Jeopardy for theentire bar association, as only Joe can do. Also, Cary Szafranski has graciously agreed tohost another trivia. I hope other HCBA members will share your ideas for virtual events tocarry us through the winter and spring. • I received the following email from Heidi Alexander, Director of the SJC Well-Beingsteering Committee.

"As you may know, the SJC Standing Committee on Lawyer Well-Being is pursuingopportunities to help alleviate stress-related to student loans, as identified in our July2019 Steering Committee Report. Christina has been significantly involved in our efforts! We are currently conducting a pilot program with AccessLex to provide education andcoaching to lawyers with debt from student loans. Thus far, the experiences have beenvery positive.

Based on this pilot, data from our Steering Committee Report, and additional discussionswith attorneys around the Commonwealth, we learned that private attorneys who takeon appointed or assigned work through the Committee for Public Counsel Services areseverely in need of support with loan repayment and financial assistance generally dueto the low compensation rates for private counsel. While we will advocate for increases inrates for private counsel, at the same time, as Christina is aware, we discovered anotherpath for assistance to these private attorneys doing primarily public service work throughPublic Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF).

Upon advice from experts in student loan repayment and advocacy, we are drafting aletter to the presidential transition team to request acknowledgment of eligibility forprivate bar advocates under PSLF. Not only could this be life-changing for the attorneyscurrently doing this work, but it will also help to attract and retain attorneys to fill themuch need gap in the shortage of CPCS bar advocates, particularly in the western partof our state.

We learned today that the presidential transition team plans to wrap up their memosand recommendations this Friday. We are thus scrambling to finalize our letter and addas many signatories as possible to our letter."

We would love to include the Hampden County Bar Association as a signatory. I happilysigned this letter.

As always, contact me with any questions, comments, or suggestions!
