Millions of job opportunities.More than anything else, the best thing about technology today is that there are millions of open job requisitions waiting for those with the skills to fill them.

Beyond that are all the other jobs in every industry that require tech familiarity and skills. You don’t need to be aiming for a career in tech for your career to benefit from your knowledge of it.

Tech4All was conceived to show many New York-area job seekers how they can prepare themselves with the skills and knowledge needed to pursue these available jobs. We are hosting Tech4All in partnership with the United Federation of Teachers and thank them for the use of their facility, but today’s attendees are not all graduating students. They are also parents whose children are grown freeing them to return to the world of work. Military veterans returning from their service with wonderful skills and experience. Experienced workers who feel the need to change careers. They are men, women, boys, girls, and truly a “gorgeous mosaic” of all races, creeds, and colors.

Like myself, all our presenters and moderators deeply appreciate the successful careers tech has enabled us to enjoy. It has been rewarding work, helping others be productive and successful by using the technologies we provide. At some point along our careers we benefited from others in the industry who had gone before. This is our opportunity to continue the Tech industry tradition of paying it forward.

We thank all our sponsors, partners, moderators, participants, and volunteers for everything they’ve contributed.

Please thank us by listening, learning, and using what you find here at Tech4All to launch your successful, high-paying, deeply rewarding career in tech.

Keynote: Working in a Post Degree WorldWhy job role-based, pre-employment training is the

wave of the future.

If autonomous vehicles were perfected tomorrow where would all those people work? What if an AI breakthrough was developed that made lawyers and accountants obsolete? What would we do? How would we retrain all those individuals quickly for other positions? Our current education market built on the premise that a degree is the end all be all won’t serve us well in a world with substantial job turnover and dislocation. We need a model that allows individuals to reskill and upskill more quickly while emphasizing the soft skills and business acumen employers are demanding today. Mr. Thibodeaux will describe such a model and talk about how industries can put it to work to fill their current and future needs.

Todd ThibodeauxTodd Thibodeaux is the President and Chief Executive Officer of CompTIA, the leading non-profit trade association for the global technology industry. CompTIA represents more than 2,000 member companies and 3,000 business partners spanning the worldwide technology industry.

Since joining the organization in 2008, Thibodeaux has led the expansion of

CompTIA’s commitment to advancing industry growth through education and training programs, market intelligence and research, networking events, professional certifications and public advocacy.

One of the issues Mr. Thibodeaux has been most vocal and engaged on is the need for new policies, programs, straegies, and tactics to assure that there are sufficient numbers of workers to fill the employment needs of the global tech industry. Under his leadership, CompTIA has launched a series of initiatives to deepen the pool of qualified job candidates.

He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Willmington (Bachelor of Science, economics, 1988) and George Mason University (Master’s degree in economics, 1997).

Success Testimonies

Miguel Ortiz

There are many differnet paths to success in technology careers. With a little ambition and the will to learn, you can bring yourself from a rough spot all the way to a successful career. Hear from five of the success stories from right here in your backyard as they tell you how they went about securing a spot for themselves and their future in the world of tech!

Miguel Ortiz is a Security Architect for Verizon Enterprise Sales helping Fortune 500 companies build security solutions for DDoS attacks, managed SIEM, MSS premise based and SaaS solutions. Having gained his IT experience from IBM and computer programming courses at New York City Technical College and Pace University, he received his Bachelor of Business Administration (BAA) degree in Accounting from Pace

University in 1990. His career has taken him from Spanish Harlem, where he was born and raised, up through the ranks of companies such as IBM, Verizon, American Catholic, UBS, and Bear Stearns. One of his proudest accomplishments was piloting IBM Skills Discovery, a personal computing application training program.

William MendezWilliam Mendez is a founding member and Director at Friedman CyZen, a cybersecurity firm where he helps companies protect against emerging cyber-attacks. Born and raised in the South Bronx, graduating high school at age 16, William then completed basic training in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve while attending multiple colleges in Florida and New York, attaining a degree in Computer Science. He then worked for the Department of Defense

as a computer scientist, then as an Information System Security Professional with the Defense Security Service. William holds an Associate of Science in Computer Science from NYC College of Technology, a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from NYU Polytechnic, a Master of Engineering in Network Information Systems from Stevens Institute of Technology, and is a Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP).

Joseph Laub, New York

Student Success Story: Queens College

“The things I learned at Cisco Networking Academy all came together and empowered me to address the challenges that were coming at me. Had I not had that discipline, I could easily have failed at the job.”

If technology is your calling, chief information officer (CIO) might well be your dream job. For many, being a CIO is the pinnacle of success in ICT. But you might also assume that the journey to the CIO office requires a degree in engineering or computer science and a long career in ICT.

As a former musician, construction worker, systems programmer, and Cisco® Networking Academy® instructor, Joseph Laub hopes that his eclectic career teaches one important lesson: you don't have to start with a dream to achieve one.

Joe never dreamed that at the age of 37 he would be the deputy CIO of John Jay College of Criminal

Justice in New York City. “I am proud of the fact that I took a nontraditional approach in my education and my career. That doesn't take anything away from people with back-grounds in engineering or computer science. I'm just glad that I can show people there are other paths to your dreams.”

Like a lot of high school students, Joe had no idea what he wanted to do after he graduated. He freely admits to having been an under-achiever in high school. Joe explains that he was finally motivated to study harder after he worked on a construction crew to help pay his way through college.

> > > www.cisco.com/go/netacad/us

“It taught me that I wasn't cut out to do road construction for a living, so I’d better pay more attention in school.”

He went to a community college to study music, and then tried to transfer to Queens College in New York to continue his studies. But when he found out that they were going to make him start over, he decided not to pursue his music career and picked up a course catalog to see what other classes were available. “The only class I could get into was a graduate level social research class. That led me to working in the sociology department as a statistical analysis systems (SAS) programmer.”

Joseph LaubRaised on a 50-acre farm in Pennsylvania, Joseph Laub is the Chief Information Officer (CIO) at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in NYC. Originally going to community college to study music, Joseph transferred to Queens College in NYC, taking Cisco Networking Academy courses, later becoming an instructor. When John Jay College was setting up its Cisco Networking Academy program, an instructor atended Joseph’s class at QC, suggesting that he apply for a senior network manager position in the John Jay ICT department, supporting 12,000 undergrads and 2,000 graduate students. Joseph later became the deputy CIO, and today is the CIO.

Cristal EspejoCristal Espejo is one of four siblings raised by a single mother of Dominican heritage. Despite challenges of income adversity and limited resources, Cristal navigated the Bronx public school system and completed her Bachelor’s Degree from Manhattanville College. Upon finding herself unemployed after graduation, she decided to enroll in the NPower Technology Service Corps program. This enrollment was the turning point for launching her career in technology. After receiving her A+ certification, she progressed from being an intern to working full time as a Technology Business Analyst and Project Manager at Morgan Stanley. She recently pursued her AWS Solutions Architect Associate certification and accepted a role as a Consultant. During her free time, she enjoys running, photography and salsa dancing. Cristal attributes much of her success to her faith and the support of her family and friends.

Arnold RamsaranArnold Ramsaran is a Network Engineer for the National September 11th Memorial & Museum and an ITQ Instructor with Cisco Networking Academy for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where he trains U.S. Navy training officers on naval bases. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and is currently pursuing his Masters of Science degree in Cybersecurity. Arnold liked building and working with computers from an early age. Growing up in the NYC public school system, the only programs available to him at the time in his zoned middle and high school were Computer Science programming. After attending technical schools geared for industry certifications without success, he discovered Cisco Networking Academy. He has been Cisco Certified now for over ten years.

“For me, it matters that we drive technology as an equalizing force, as an enabler for everyone around the world.”

Seven basic myths about technology careers stand between tweens, teens, and choosing a career path as a technologist. So, join author, podcaster, social innovator and CEO of Creating IT Futures, Charles Eaton, as he busts all seven fallacies one by one.

• “Technology is all about coding, math, and science” • “Working in Technology requires a 4-year college degree” • “If it’s not at Facebook or Google, it’s not a technology job” • “A tech career means being stuck at a desk.” • “Money is the main benefit of a tech job.” • “Kids don’t listen to their parents.” • “Tech jobs are going overseas.”

Eaton assails these misconceptions using recent research and real-life anecdotes that illustrate the solution to filling our nation’s “Tech Skills Gap” is mentoring the next gneration of technologists, not just training a new wave of technicians.

While filling two charitable executive roles as Executive Vice President of Social Innovation at CompTIA and as CEO of the Creating IT Futures Foundation, Charles Eaton helps populations that are under-represented in IT and individuals who are lacking in opportunity to prepare for, secure and be successful in information technology careers. Under Eaton’s direction, Creating IT Futures has expanded its scope to cultivate best practices in American workforce development and tech-related STEM education. Eaton joined CompTIA and Creating IT Futures in June 2010 and has more than two decades of non-profit management experience. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English from Duke University and has four kids, ranging from elementary school-age to young adult.

Artificial intelligence is shaping our lives in ways that are obvious (Alexa, Siri, Google) and in many ways that are not. The session will take a look at both, and help you understand how AI and machine learning will impact society for decades to come. Learn what industries are likely to undergo the most rapid change from AI including medicine, design, travel and leisure, education and more.
