STRUCTURAL NOTES

1018 STRUCTURAL DEMOLITIONA. SEE SHEET 2 OF THE CONTRACT DOCUMENT FOR THEREQUIREMENTS FOR NON-DESTRUCTIVE METHODS FOR EXAMINING THECONCRETE PRIOR TO CONCRETE DEMOLITION.

B. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR SELECTINGMETHODS OF DEMOLITION SO THAT THE REMAINING STRUCTURE WILLNOT BE IMPAIRED OR DAMAGED.

C. SAWCUTTING AND CORING SHALL BE UTILIZED TO THE FULLESTEXTENT POSSIBLE. ISOLATE CONSTRUCTION TO BE REMOVED FROMTHE STRUCTURE TO REMAIN.

D. ONLY OVERCUT OPENINGS WHERE INDICATED. USE APPROPRIATESIZE CORES AT CORNERS SO THAT OVERCUTTING AT CORNERS WILLNOT BE NECESSARY. USE CHIPPING TOOLS WHERE CORNERS AREREQUIRED TO BE SQUARE.

E. SELECT METHODS OF TRANSPORTING DEBRIS THROUGH THEBUILDING WHICH WILL NOT OVERLOAD THE EXISTING OR NEW BUILDING.

F. PROVIDE SHORING REQUIRED TO SUPPORT THE STRUCTURE WHENNEW WORK TO STRENGTHEN THE STRUCTURE CANNOT BE INSTALLEDPRIOR TO DEMOLITION. MAINTAIN SHORING UNTIL NEW WORK HASATTAINED DESIGN STRENGTH.

3103 PLUMBING SLEEVES AND EMBEDDED CONDUITS:A. LOCATION DRAWINGS FOR ALL SLEEVES AND BLOCKOUTS IN THECONCRETE SHALL BE SUBMITTED FOR APPROVAL BY THE STRUCTURALENGINEER PRIOR TO PLACEMENT.

B. All CONDUIT, SLEEVES, AND PIPES EMBEDDED IN OR PASSING THRUCONCRETE SHALL CONFORM TO SECTION 6.3 OF ACI 318 AND THEFOLLOWING:

1. SLEEVES AND PIPES SHALL BE PLACED SO THAT REINFORCINGSTEEL CAN BE PLACED WITH THE SPECIFIED COVER AND CLEARDISTANCE BETWEEN BARS.

2. MINIMUM SLEEVE SPACING SHALL BE THREE DIAMETERS CENTERTO CENTER OF THE LARGER SLEEVE OR 6" CLEAR BETWEEN SLEEVES,WHICHEVER IS GREATER.

3. SLEEVES OR GROUPS OF SLEEVES 16 INCH IN DIAMETER ANDLARGER SHALL BE TREATED AS A SLAB OPENING AND REINFORCEDPER TYPICAL OPENING REINFORCING DETAILS.

4. CONDUIT AND PIPES PLACED WITHIN SLABS, BEAMS, WALLS ANDTOPPING OVER SLABS SHALL OCCUPY ONLY THE MIDDLE ONE THIRDOF THE MEMBER DEPTH OR THICKNESS. MAXIMUM CONDUIT O.D. FORSINGLE CONDUITS OR SUM OF O.D.’S FOR MULTIPLE CONDUITS THATCROSS SHALL BE NO LARGER THAN ONE THIRD THE MEMBER DEPTH.PARALLEL CONDUITS SHALL BE SPACED WITH A MINIMUM OF 3DIAMETERS CLEAR. CONDUITS SHALL BE A MINIMUM OF ONE DIAMETERAWAY FROM AND SHALL NOT INTERFERE WITH OR DISPLACE ANYTENDONS OR REINFORCING. CONDUIT SHALL NOT BE TIED TOREINFORCING OR TENDONS. 5. CONDUITS AND PIPES PLACED IN COLUMNS SHALL NOT DISPLACEMORE THAN 4% OF THE CROSS SECTIONAL AREA OF COLUMN ANDSHALL BE LOCATED ON THE CENTER LINE OF COLUMN. OUTLET BOXESIN COLUMNS SHALL BE APPROVED BY THE ENGINEER, SHALL NOTDISPLACE REINFORCING AND SHALL NOT BE DEEPER THAN REQUIREDCLEARANCE FOR REINF.

3104 CONSTRUCTION JOINTS AND CONTROL JOINTS:A. CONSTRUCTION JOINTS AND CONTROL JOINTS SHALL BE LOCATEDAS SHOWN IN PLAN OR SECTION.

B. UNLESS NOTED OTHERWISE, CONTROL JOINTS IN SLABS ON GRADESHALL BE PROVIDED SO THAT THE MAXIMUM DISTANCE BETWEENJOINTS SHALL BE NO MORE THAN 3 TIMES THE SLAB THICKNESS INFEET (OR AS SHOWN ON PLANS). SAWCUT CONTROL JOINTS SHALL BEMADE AS SOON AS SLAB WILL SAFELY SUPPORT MEN AND EQUIPMENTAND THE SLAB WILL NOT BE DAMAGED BY EQUIPMENT.
