Our President Speaks I am writing this letter from Fargo, N.D. - stuck

here in a blizzard while on our way to Phoenix - our flight has been cancelled and we will be coming back in Winnipeg tomorrow. Oh, well, the travails of try-ing to avoid winter.

We had another successful President’s luncheon

on December 15th and made a nice donation to the Dream Factory. Thanks to everyone who makes this a great event each year. Thanks again to Al and Eri-ca for hosting the Xmas party at their new home. I think all the Gyros enjoyed a lovely evening with more than adequate Christmas cheer!

I hope everyone had a great Christmas and man-

aged to connect with all your loved ones. It’s time to now start thinking about 2019 and those New Years resolutions. Remember, hope abounds within the depths of winter (wind outside here currently about 50mph….lucky to find a beer at the bar…hard to be-lieve any of the hotel staff made it to work!). Good thing I’m an optimist.

Our scheduled Gyro event for January is GoCart

and AirSoft on January 26th. Please advise Derek if you are planning on attending. A reminder to all that the meeting that is normally scheduled on the 1st Wednesday of January is cancelled and we will com-mence our 2019 meetings on week 3, January 16th.

Gyro Dinner Meeting December 5th, 2018

In attendance tonight were Gyro’s: Al, Don, Ty-ler, Gary H., Craig, Bill, Brent, Gary P., Tony, Derek & George, who all came out to enjoy out-standing salad followed with a nice turkey dinner and dessert made to add pounds. Casual conversa-tion around the table as mainly about hockey.

Brief Business portion: • Christmas party • Al is ready. Traditional Turkey dinner. • President luncheon already to go

Health • Val is doing very well • Bill A. Doing good as well • Don visited Bob Dines, doing well but dementia

has set in Board meeting • Donation this year increased by$1000 to a total

of $4000 this year. Dream Factory • New events and some old events are in the plan-

ning phase for the Spring. The draw

Good bye George, so long Don as these two were eliminated from the draw tonight, leaving the win-ner to be Craig, with Don & Tony wining the NTI.

The free dinner was also won by Tony who went home with some of the many coins in brought in a month ago.

For those in the Lottery pool from last meeting we are still active. A new Pool also started up this meeting.

Good & Welfare

Tony has given up trying to find a comparable venue that can provide a private meeting area for our meal. Also our meals seem to have gotten better in the last month, so there is no reason at this time to move to a different location.

Christmas Party By Michelle

On December 8, 2018 the GYRO Christmas cele-bration took place once again and thanks to our gra-cious hosts, Al and Erica McLaughlin and their two busy elves, a great time was had by all 36 guests. Al and Erica always succeed in amazing us, not only by opening up their home at such a busy time of year, but by their ability to create a wonderful spar-kling evening with all the right touches.

Mouth watering appetizers greeted us as we set-

tled in to their cozy and warm holiday environment. The dinner table was incredible with many mouth-watering choices including turkey, ham and all the trimmings. The flower centre piece set the stage for each dish calling to us from its prefect setting.

Interaction was constant as we all caught up and

shared stories with one another. At times conversa-tion tackled serious concerns and current affairs but as always individuals and groups found a way to combine serious talk with laughter and fun. Our President, Brent Young, found just the right words to thank our hosts as they looked on in appreciation

and we were all wished the very best for the upcom-ing year.

In the midst of our evening and to our surprise

conversation was halted as a group of enthusiastic carollers arrived and sang their favourite songs in support of a chosen charity. Thank you members for giving generously to their cause and thank you San-ta for bringing them our way!

As we leave 2018 it is important to consider one

important point. We all deserve a pat on the back and why? No matter what the occasion, we can walk into a room filled with folks from many walks of life and share the best gift of all, FRIENDSHIP. Congrats Gyros and Gyrettes, the world is a better place with all of you in it. Carry on and lets recruit some fascinating new members for next year’s par-ty. They will be amazed!

If you become aware of a death, sickness or hospitalization involving a fellow Gyro or their immediate family, please notify Don McInnes, Chair of the Health Committee so that appropriate action can be taken.

Gyro President’s Luncheon By President Brent

Another successful President’s Luncheon was held at the Winter Club on December 15th with ap-proximately 70 men attending. Our guest speaker, Joe Poplawski, entertained us with some stories about his early career with the Bombers, some of the famous players and coaches with the Bombers and the league - Dieter Brock, James West, Rick House, Bernie Ruoff, Tom Clements, Ray Jauch, Cal Murphy, Hugh Campbell, Paul Robson, just to name a few. Joe shared some very candid thoughts regarding the state of our football team and provid-ed comments on our quarterback, the receiving core, the offensive coordinator, the large upcoming free agent market, field conditions at this years Grey Cup, etc. Many of these reflected some of the con-cerns that many of us have had regarding the state of Winnipeg football.

We all enjoyed a meal of beef wellington and the

attendees enjoyed a few libations keeping in mind that many of us needed to drive home safely follow-ing the event. A donation of $4,000 has been made

to the Dream Factory, an increase from our $3,000 donation level of previous years. I would add that there were three guests at my table who also attend-ed our wine and cheese event in October for pro-spective new members. Overall, a successful event and special thanks to the Gyro members who make a concerted effort each year to bring out one or more guests (and one member in particular who was the host for probably 25% of the crowd).

Humour Page Thoughts to Ponder. ? If poison expires, is it more poisonous or is it no

longer poisonous? ? Which letter is silent in the word "Scent," the S

or the C? ? Do twins ever realize that one of them is un-

planned? ? Why is the letter W, in English, called double

U? Shouldn't it be called double V? ? Maybe oxygen is slowly killing you and It just

takes 75-100 years to fully work. ? Every time you clean something, you just make

something else dirty. ? The word "swims" upside-down is still "swims" ? 100 years ago everyone owned a horse and only

the rich had cars. Today everyone has cars and only the rich own horses.

? If you replace "W" with "T" in "What, Where and When", you get the answer to each of them.

? At a movie theatre, which arm rest is yours? ? If people evolve from monkeys, why are mon-

keys still around? ? Why is there a 'D' in fridge, but not in refrigera-

tor? ? Who knew what time it was when the first clock

was made? ? Wonder why the word funeral starts with FUN? ? Why isn't a Fireman called a Water-man? ? How come Lipstick doesn't do what it says? ? If money doesn't grow on trees, how come

Banks have Branches? ? If a Vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a Hu-

manitarian eat? ? How do you get off a non-stop Flight? ? Why are goods sent by ship called CARGO and

those sent by truck SHIPMENT?

? Why do we put cups in the dishwasher and the dishes in the Cupboard?

Golf at Christmas

Four old-timers were playing their weekly game of golf, and one remarked how nice it would be to wake up on Christmas morning, roll out of bed an without an argument, go directly to the golf course, meet his buddies, and play a round.

His buddies all chimed in and said, “Let’s do it! We'll make it a priority, figure out a way and meet here early Christmas morning." Months later, that special morning arrives, and there they are on the golf course.

The first guy says, "Boy, this game cost me a for-tune. I bought my wife such a diamond ring that she can't take her eyes off it."

Second guy says, "My wife is at home planning the cruise I gave her. She was up to her eyeballs in brochures."

Third guy says, "Well, my wife is at home admir-ing her new car, reading the manual."

They all turned to the last guy in the group who is staring at them like they all had lost their minds. "I can't believe you all went to such expense for this golf game. I woke up, slapped my wife on the butt and said: "Well Babe, Merry Christmas. It's a great morning for either sex or golf, and she said, "Take a sweater. ”

LAST RIDE ON MY HARLEY? While riding my Harley, I swerved to avoid hitting

a deer, lost control and landed in a ditch, severely banging my head. Dazed and confused I crawled out of the ditch to the edge of the road when a shiny new convertible pulled up with a very beautiful woman who asked, "Are you okay?" As I looked up, I no-ticed she was wearing a low cut blouse with cleavage to die for...

"I'm okay I think," I replied as I pulled myself up to the side of the car to get a closer look.

She said, “Get in and I’ll take you home so I can clean and bandage that nasty scrape on your head.”

"That's nice of you," I answered, "but I don't think my wife will like me doing that!"

"Oh, come now, I’m a nurse," she insisted. "I need to see if you have any more scrapes and then treat them properly." Well, she was really pretty and very persuasive. Being sort of shaken and weak, I agreed, but repeated, "I'm sure my wife won't like this." We arrived at her place which was just few miles away and, after a couple of cold beers and the bandaging, I thanked her and said, "I feel a lot better but I know my wife is going to be really upset so I'd better go now."

"Don't be silly!" she said with a smile. "Stay for a while. She won't know anything. By the way, where is she?"

Still in the ditch with the Harley, I guess."

Court Date A cranky older woman "in her senior years" was

arrested for shoplifting at a grocery store. She gave everyone a hard time, from the store manager to the security guard to the arresting officer who took her away. She complained and criticized everything and everyone throughout the process. When she appeared before the judge, the judge asked her what she had stolen from the store. The lady defiantly replied, "Just a stupid can of peaches you old fool.”

The judge then asked why she had done it. She replied, "I was hungry and forgot to bring any

cash to the store." The judge asked how many peaches were in the

can. She replied in a nasty tone, "Nine! But why do you care about that?"

The judge answered patiently, "Well, ma'am, be-cause I'm going to give you nine days in jail -- one day for each peach."

As the judge was about to drop his gavel, the lady's long-suffering husband raised his hand slowly and asked if he might speak. "Yes sir, what do you have to add?"

The husband said meekly, "Your Honor, she also stole two cans of peas.

The Dying Irishman An Irishman lies dying; his wife is by his bedside. He says in a weakened voice “There is something I

must confess.” “Shhhh” said the wife, “there is nothing to con-

fess.” She holds his hand and caresses his head. “Everything is all right” she whispers.

“NO!!” the husband replied “I must die in peace...I had sex with your sister, your best friend, her best friend and your best friend's mum!”

“I know,” she whispered, “That's why I poisoned you. Now close your eyes.”
