• A circle has 360o

• Longitude has 360o, i.e. 180o East and West of the Prime Meridian (England)

• Latitude however only has 180o, i.e. 90o North and South (30o North latitude is the same all the way around the northern hemisphere)




• Using the equator as reference and assuming the north/south circumference of the earth is the same.

• 360o is equal to 21600 minutes (360o x 60 min/deg)

• By definition 1 minute of an arc of longitude at the equator is equal to 1 nautical mile

• 1’ of an arc of Latitude at the equator is 1 nm

• 1’ of an arc of Latitude is constant in length as you go North or South of the Equator



• Flying North/South, Latitude changes and 1’ of an arc is always 1 nm.

• Parallels of Latitude become smaller the further away from the Equator, but distance between parallels is always equal

• A bit confusing since you are traversing a Line of Longitude.



• 1’of an arc of Longitude is 1 nm at the equator, but decreases closer to the poles (higher latitudes) [1 nm x cosine (latitude)]

• 1’ @ L18 is 0.838 nm• 1’ @ 45o N or S is 0.707 nm• 1’ @ 90o N or S is 0 nm



• Flying East/West, Longitude, changes. The distance between Lines of Longitude is not always constant

• Lines of Longitude have the greatest separation at the Equator and began to converge moving toward the poles

• Again, confusing since now you are traversing a parallel of Latitude.



• A standard U.S. Grid at the Equator is 15 nm North/South and 15 nm East/West

• A standard U.S. Grid at Fallbrook is 15 nm North/South and 12.57 nm East/West

• Flying at 90 kts or 1.5 nm/min it takes 10 min North/South and 8.38 min East/West

• If it is NOT in the database, the GPS can’t take you there

• You can navigate to any point on the map using the GPS

• If it is not in the database, you have to enter it

• If it does not have a name - you can’t use it unless you enter it with a name!



• Add a Waypoint:• Give it a Name (6 characters max)• You can call waypoints anything you want.

(Q-Mary, School, Hwy 76, SAR001 etc.)• US Grid waypoints named by corner of

grid (278A1, 278B4 etc.)
