Hi all, Although Wingless Weekend was unable to
be an in-person event this year, Ken Kintner made a great Live-Stream video to keep us informed and in-spired. It was very exciting when our Chapter was honored with the 2021 MI District Individual of the Year and the 2020 Newsletter of the Year! Congratu-lations Dale Duncan as 2021 MI District Individual of the Year and Trish Tacey as 2020 Newsletter of the Year Editor!
Spring is finally here... and with it some great upcoming rides. We’re very happy that Dale Duncan is offering to lead picnic rides again this year. They were a lot of fun last year and easy on the wallet to boot, not to mention going to places we didn’t know existed. What fun! Thanks Dale.
By now our planned ride at the end of March to The Iron Pony, near Columbus, Ohio, has already passed. If there’s one way to get you into riding sea-son, it’s a trip to The Iron Pony. We bought gators there on our one and only trip 7 or 8 years ago. We had no idea there were such things. Boy have they come in handy. As the saying goes “you don’t know what you don’t know”. So, be prepared to “learn”.
Our next big, planned ride is to Tennessee’s Spring Fling the end of this month. We’ve made it to one of their events so far and look forward to another. We certainly don’t have hills like they have. You can get “your curve on”, so to speak. We hope you get the opportunity to go if you’ve never been. Meeting GWRRA members from all over the United States was an experience we’ll never forget. We learned we actually have an accent... at least that’s what we were told a few times down there. It’s definitely fun to expand friendships with other people that love riding motorcycles as we do.
Spring is a great time to feel renewed, and what better way to do that than feeling the air on your face while riding your motorcycle. Enjoy the warmer weather everyone and please stay safe and healthy.
Stay safe and healthy.

Getting Close to Riding Season in Michigan, As we know, many drivers are not aware of how
to safely share roads with us as motorcyclists. Most crashes happen in intersections. Be sure traffic is clear when you are making the turn, but even more importantly remember that a vehicle turning in front of us is the larg-est cause of motorcycle fatalities.
Use your full lane when needed for road condi-tions such as potholes, animal and road debris. When you are driving in a four-wheeler with someone and they mention a motorcyclist ahead or behind that is swerving, point out that the motorcyclist has the full lane and from your personal knowledge, often needs it. I believe our sharing our knowledge with the general public, friends, and family does help us all.
We have little personal protection other than hel-mets and clothes, but we also know that the way vehicles are built, their cage is not the same as it used to be. Share that information with others also, whenever possi-ble. Mention that the motorcyclist you just saw is wearing all their safety gear, or that one may someday have a rough landing in that tank top and tennis shoes.
Rick Andreen, our Rider Course Coordinator, has begun working with our regular venues to schedule clas-ses. Oakland County Complex has June 5th available and are willing to host us so we will be holding an ARC and TRC there. LSSU at Sault Ste Marie has August 7th or August 14th available and are willing to host us so we will be holding an ARC and TRC there. Ionia School District is not allowing anyone on their campus from outside of the school, but we are trying to get a Range Only on May 1 or May 8. Grayling High School is a possibility and we have tentatively scheduled them for July 24th, but they are wary of committing so we are waiting to hear from them again.
We would like to hold an ARC-R on Friday morn-ing, August 20, in St. Louis during our Michigan Rally, but we have not yet found a paved 200 ft x 300 ft clear area (no poles, lights, drainage structures, curbs) for the range. Google Earth shows only a small parking lot at the campgrounds, and the St. Louis High School shows on Google Earth a 236 x 232 max parking lot. We do not want to put it on the Rider Course Registration form if we cannot have it, but we also want you to spend time with us practicing our motorcycle safety skills so we are trying to get the registration form finalized with the best knowledge we have at the moment.
We are offering MFA courses and have success-fully taught them this year, so please complete the Re-quest form on the Michigan website. We would love to

Hi Gang: What ya been up too?
Well with me the same old same old. Just got done with a team meeting. It was good to see everyone. It is start-ing to get a little warmer outside. About time. Maybe I can take Ella for a short ride on the wing soon.
Have been helping my brother out by driving him around to his appointments and odd stuff he wants me to do for him. It gives me something to do also and gives Ella some time for herself. She is glad for that. lol.
Well, I know this isn't very long like I usually write, but I can't think of anything else to write about right now, so I will let you off the hook for now on reading this arti-cle. Hi! Everyone Hope March was good for all of you. I got my
second vaccine shot Saturday 3-20-21. Arm is a little sore but nothing serious. Hope this works as I’m get-ting tired of not being able to do all the fun things I would normally be doing. I hope everyone who went on the Iron Pony ride had a great time. Thanks, so much Dale for putting this ride on. I know everyone appreci-ates all the work you do to help keep us active. CON-GRATULATIONS to TRISH for being the winner of the NEWSLETTER of the YEAR. Dale for being the MI Dis-trict Individual of the Year, and Jeanne for being our Chapter J Individual of the Year.
April sounds like it will be a better time to partic-ipate in all the activities that are listed in the Newsletter. Dale is starting the Picnic rides again, so be sure to check your emails frequently, so you don’t miss out.
The Chapter J COOKBOOK deadline for reci-pes was March 31. I know Terri put that in one of her emails that she sends out. It’s really looking great, and I’m excited to see it in print. At the April Gathering I will have the categories with the recipes for proofing. We hope we can have a real Chapter Gathering. It is sup-posed to be at Kim and Charlie’s. I will need some vol-unteers to proof the recipes, to make sure everything is correct, spelling, ingredients, directions, instructions, notes, and anything else that relates to the recipes. We have over 150 recipes in different categories, so it will be great to try out some of them when we get this pub-lished. My hopes are that the deadline dates for this will be:
1. April for proofing 2. May for any corrections to be completed by June 3. June to see if we can get the Cookbook published
I want to THANK everyone who sent me recipes. This wouldn’t be possible without you. The recipes all look delicious.
Don’t forget if you want to go on the Chapter J Face Book site use only: GWRRA Cascade Wings MI-J of Jackson Michigan
Now on our Website is the “Member Page” (bottom on the left side of the front page) Hopefully I can get all this done real soon. If you don’t see your name be patient, I’m still working on getting every “Member of the Month” article that Vicki Rogers and Julie Hoover have done since it started in 2000.
Go to the MICHIGAN WEB SITE, choose CHAPTER SEARCH, scroll down to Chapter J You will see 2 op-tions Website and Newsletter. If you click on the News-letter you will see previous Newsletters and our Current

Seems like I just wrote the newsletter just yesterday. Not much has been going on. Just the same old things. Going to the store and cooking meals, seems like I have cooked more in the last year then I ever did. Don't think I didn't cook before because I did, but it seems like I do it more now. Even cooking different things. Made corn beef and cabbage and it did turn out good. Gordon likes corned beef better than I do. I like the veggies that goes with it. Going to Iron Pony Mar. 27 I just might get me a heated vest if I can find one, I like. We will be staying overnight, but we have to get back early because we are getting our second covid shot. We will have gone with some of our group. Will be going to the Blarney Bash on the 10th of April, will be nice to see everyone. Hope everyone is staying well and safe.

Happy Easter, Our weather is warming, and Spring is in the air. Looking forward to being able to see friends and can’t wait to get the bikes out for Dale’s picnic rides, Jeff’s ice cream rides and enjoying Michigan’s beautiful back roads with friends. I want to thank Dale and Andy for the great ride to Iron Pony. We had a great weekend and Bob and I bought new helmets. Ours had been around a few
years and we wanted to start the season with safety in mind. If you’ve never been to Iron Pony in Westervill, OH, it has about everything you can imagine in motor-cycle and autocycle from gear to the bike itself. Tim
Reimers and I had a chance to sit in a Vanderhall Car-mel Autocycle. Autocycle you say? What in the world is that? It is the coolest Automobile Motorcycle combo you can imagine. They are hand made in Utah and the

Distracted Driving Laws in Michigan Distracted driving is responsible for various significant problems regarding Michigan motorists and public streets, consequently causing property damage, serious injuries and even fatalities. According to distracted driving facts, nearly 3,500 deaths are consequences of driving distractions every year. Furthermore, polls indicate that one in eve-ry five motorists admits to using some form of hand-held device for sending or receiving electronic commu-nications while operating a vehicle. Overall, distracted driving laws in MI are de-signed to discourage motorists from engaging in the kinds of behavior that result in damages, injuries or fatalities. Thus, they aim to lessen the frequency of the accidents caused by this behavior. To find out more about the state’s laws on distracted driving, read the sections below.
What is distracted driving in Michigan? According to Michigan laws, distracted driving occurs when a motorist fails to focus on the operation of a motor vehicle because he or she engaged in some other activity, such as using a handheld device. Be-cause of the rise in the popularity of smartphones, many states have passed legislation to combat the rising number of accidents occurring in the United States as a result of cell phone use while driving. The Centers for Disease Control and Preven-tion (CDC) classifies driving distractions into the three following major categories:
• Visual – A visual driving distraction involves any action in which a driver’s vision is pulled away from the operation of a vehicle. This category includes such activities as texting and driving, changing a radio station or looking for a lost object inside a moving car, to name a few.
• Manual – The category of manual distractions in-cludes any action that causes you take your hands off the steering wheel for any reason. If you are eating food while you are driving, or putting on makeup or shaving, those instances will be consid-ered manual distractions.
• Cognitive – Driving while distracted involves things that occupy your mind and shift your focus elsewhere, distracting you from operating a motor vehicle. A fairly typical cognitive distraction in-cludes carrying a conversation with a passenger in your car while you are driving.
As a general rule, texting while driving is considered one of the most severe forms of distracted driving, as it involves elements of all three of the CDC’s categories of distractions. Other common activities that may be classified as driving distractions include:

• Talking on a cell phone or using it to send an elec-tronic message
• Having a meal or drinking a beverage
• Reading
• Using any sort of device to watch a video
• Having a conversation with a passenger
• Grooming, such as shaving or applying makeup
• Using any form of navigation devices
Distracted Driving Laws in Michigan for Handheld Devices Cell phone use while driving is a persistent issue that has caused a significant number of auto accidents in Michigan. As such, MI state laws prohibit various forms of cell phone use while driving, such as reading, typing or sending text messages or establishing any two-way wire-less communication between electronic devices. The only exceptions regarding cell phone distraction laws include placing a call to report an accident or medical emergency.
Michigan Laws on Distracted Driving for Novice Driv-ers Michigan laws on distracted driving prohibit all motorists who hold a level I or level II graduated license from using a cell phone while driving, unless the phone is using a voice-operated system that is integrated into the vehicle. In general, novice drivers who hold these types of driving credentials are younger than 18 years of age.
Texting and Driving Laws in Michigan Michigan law prohibits texting while driving for motorists of all ages and skill levels. These rules encom-pass the usage of any handheld device that sends and/or receives text messages. Such devices are also not per-mitted to be used to read, write or play any sort of media while operation a vehicle. As detailed in previous sec-tions, MI provides very few exceptions for this distracted driving law, which include:
• Reporting a traffic accident, medical emergency or road hazard
• Calling for help during a situation in which the motor-ist believes that he or she is in imminent danger
• Reporting a crime against another individual
• Using a GPS or other type of navigation system that is integrated into the vehicle
Michigan Distracted Drivers Regulations for CDL Holders Distracted driving laws in Michigan prohibit bus drivers or any other motorists who hold commercial driv-er’s licenses from using handheld electronic devices while operating a vehicle. On the other hand, cell phone use while driving is acceptable for law enforcement officers, firefighters or emergency medical technicians (EMTs) using mobile phones during the course of carrying out their official duties.
Distracted Driving Penalties in Michigan Texting and driving fines in Michigan cost $100 for a first offense and $200 for subsequent offenses. Moreover, state courts may impose additional costs on

top of the fines established by law enforcement authori-ties. Distracted driving penalties for those using a cell phone while operating a vehicle are civil infractions that carry fines of up to $100. Court costs may raise that amount, but no demerit points are assessed on a driver’s record. Comparatively, while commercial drivers incur fines of equal amounts, they are subject to incurring points on their driving records.
Ways to Prevent Distracting Driving in Michigan Michigan law enforcement agencies and offic-ers always aim to find effective ways to stop texting and driving, as well as discourage other behaviors that in-hibit the safe operation of a motor vehicle. Some of the most effective ways to reduce the odds of a distracted driving accident include the following:
• Multi-tasking, talking on the phone, searching for a radio station and sending a text message are all considered driving distractions.
• Eating while driving is another significant source of distraction for motorists. For instance, spilling foods or liquids in the car can cause a major distraction from driving.
• Tired drivers are four times more likely to have an accident. Thus, consider pulling over and resting for a few minutes if you do not feel energized enough to operate a car.
• Limiting the number of passengers in a vehicle can significantly reduce driving distractions. As a gen-eral rule, having several passengers in a car may greatly increase a motorist’s level of distraction.
• Cell phone use while driving should be reserved to emergency situations. If you need to use it, make sure to pull over to the side of the road first, and bring your car to a complete stop before using the device. Furthermore, avoid engaging in social and/or casual conversations while you are driving.

News from Chapter “J” Hello Chapter J Friends! Well, we think we are finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel. Bear still has a few lingering health issues but overall is much better. After getting both of the Pfizer vaccine shots, he is now fully vaccinated. We are blessed that he never got the virus. He’s now start-ed back to the gym to rebuild the strength he lost.
We played golf yesterday. Got in 9 holes and were both playing fairly well (Donna shot 46 and Bear 48). Then our grandson called while we were teeing off on hole 10. We took turns talking to him in between golf shots but we had lost the rhythm of the game, so we quit on the 14th hole. Still a good time and we love talking to our grandkids so that was great too. Mike’s oldest daughter, husband and 2 kids are coming to Myrtle Beach for spring break. We have rented a house right on the beach and will meet them there. Will be good to see them after this covid time of isolation!
We’ve been able to get out on the bikes for some short (1 to 2 hour) rides. It feels good to be back. The peach trees are blooming now, and the strawber-ries should be out in a week. Absolutely gorgeous rides when the trees are blooming.
We are getting ready to pack up and head to Michigan for the summer probably mid-May. Oh, and we have a hawk that loves to hunt in our backyard. Until next time, ride safe! Bear & Donna
From Charlie and Kim Brown Our trip to Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge Feb 2021
Maybe some thoughts for Spring Fling. We aren't going to write about the weather because weather just happens and there isn't much you can do about it. But we can give you a few tidbits of what we did while there.
We went over a long President's day weekend which was also Valentine's weekend. Boy what traffic! If you can find a "side" way into Pigeon Forge besides the main road off Hwy 40 that might be good. That main Road that runs between Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg can take you 40 minutes to go 10 miles. So, plan accord-ingly. Going through early in the morning helps!
Since it was chilly when we were there, we did some Antique hunting. I collected quite a few pieces of my Grandmother's Jewel Tea dishes. Quite a few shops along that main route. On one of our alternate routes back we found the Three Jimmy's Good Time Eatery in Gatlinburg. That food was DELICIOUS!!
If you have an interest in History try the Buttonwil-low Civil War Theater in Pigeon Forge (right across from the Titanic Museum). The man who owns/runs/acts in the production has done a ton of research into events. It made us really think!
One of the things we didn't get to do was to expe-rience one of the tramways to the top of the mountain in Gatlinburg. They have one that goes to the SkyBridge.
The end of Gatlinburg that was closer to the Smoky Mountain National Park was less crowd-ed. Google was a great help finding things and alternate routes.
Anyway a few thoughts. We won't be able to go to Spring Fling, because by then we should have our very first, brand new Grandson and we'll be helping them out for a bit. Yippee!!! Have fun and ride safe!
