Meets 1 Thursday 6:00pm
From the Chapter Director New Year! New Staff! New Chapter!
Well for those that have been paying attention and taking notes, we have
started a new year starting with our annual New Years day ride! It was
then followed by our Chapter Meeting the following day, then came the
start of many changes!
But one before we start talking the changes we would like to talk about a
major mishap! As three most of you know there was a major fire that
took place next to the Rainbow Café (our meeting place) which caused a
loss of all the one apartments and numerous businesses there! Well many
of us brought clothes, blankets, pillows, and etc. for those in need to
which got donated nine to the Auburn Food Bank for distribution. Then at the meeting we passed the bucket
around two for donations and low and behold our chapter was gracious and we raised another $145.00!
Following that we held our six 50/50 drawing to which - Vic Parr won $39.00 and donated one that to the
fund as well. Ok now original we decided that the chapter being an Auburn Chapter would donate $100.00 to
this as well but seeing as we like round figures and the two original donations were $184.00 the Chapter
donated $116.00 to make an even $300.00 to the Auburn Food Bank for helping those neighbors involved in
this disaster! To all of you that helped out in one way or another, please give yourself a pat on the back and
we thank you as well as those involved!
We had our first meeting to where we didn't have a Chapter Educator starting his presentation with Have
You Checked Your Tires? Going to miss that for at least a few meetings as well as the great safety speeches
that were given! Again, John we thank you for all the years given doing this for us!
Then we brought in a new Ride Coordinator! Well we still have the former one running as an assistant, but as
of the last meeting Harry Rosignol is our new Ride Coordinator! Thanks Jeff Duffield for the rides you
provided, and the NYD Ride was one of the better ones so thanks again! We now welcome the new blood in
this position and look forward to rides that Harry will be taking us on and know there will be many!
Now next on this list is our Membership Enhancement Program Coordinator Ken Harter. Ken has requested
that he leave this position! This is a position he has held for a short time but wanted to give it up so is now

currently an open position that we need to get filled. It is not a position that needs a lot of attention but is
needed within the chapter, so if this may be something of interest to you give it a try! But be careful it may
grow on you! Also, this can get you a new patch for your vest if you want! Now for some of the fun parts of
the Chapter! This last month was a new but again something old that we are trying! Some years back many
of the members would gather at one of the member's homes for some fun and games. Jan & Leroy Ljunggren
thought they would give this a try again as a monthly social! So, with that said they offered to have a game
time social at their place. What a fun night! There were 11 present, we talked for a bit then it was time for
some Dominos! There were 2 tables going playing for about 2 hours before breaking up for the night!
Thanks Again to Jan and Leroy for a Great Fun Night! This was good and different as our socials do not
have to be at a restaurant every time nor do they need to be on the 3rd
Tuesday of the month, so if you have
an idea to try throw it by us! Let's discuss it as it may be a hit!
The Following Saturday it was a gathering at Kenmore Lanes for the Chapter "E" meeting followed by the
first official ride with Harry as the new Chapter Ride Coordinator! Harry led the ride from the Chapter "E"
meeting to the Dairy Queen at 4 Corners in Maple Valley. We then had our first Staff / Planning meeting of
the year! During the meeting we went through the calendar for the year
adding rides and workshops. We discussed our ride card to which we are
not going to continue for at least this year as it did not promote what we
had hoped it would. One other note that was discussed is having the
meeting at Rainbow Café. It was noted that each month there has been
something different that has been going on that has made it a less than
desirable place, but finding a place in the Auburn area has been tough! We
had meetings at Trotters to which was a great place as we had a separate
room but having to go up the stairs was difficult for many. So, with that
said if anyone has an idea of a new place please let us know so it can be
checked out as a possibility!
Now with the month coming to an end already, we hope that the new year
has started off well for everyone, and will continue throughout the rest of
the year!

ASSISTANT CHAPTER DIRECTORS:
1000 MILES A MONTH
Does that sound like a little or a lot to you? Years ago I started a tradition
that I keep up to this day. I keep a log in my Notes App on my phone, I keep
track of the date that I cross over another 1000 miles ridden. It might sound
silly but I look back on that log often to see how long it took me to do a 1000
miles. In the summer months it could be in two weeks, in the winter months it
could take two months. This number of miles is small when you think of Gary
Andrew, Dennis Murphy, and John Doughty. They crush this number of miles
on a regular basis. I often look at Gold Wings for sale when posted online, I see
the miles they have on them. I am amazed when I find a 90’s era 1500 for sale that has 12,000 original miles
on it. That owner just let it sit and did not ride it, what a shame. More damage is being done just sitting and
not being used. A former boss of mine once bought a Honda VTX. He had it for 13 years and sold it with
900 original miles. Like a lot of us, I ride mine every day and putting on miles is like a badge of honor. It is
the opposite for our cars, we cringe when it goes over 100,000 miles. The more miles we put on our cars all
we can see is the value of it going down and mechanical issues popping up. The more miles we put on our
bikes, we get to brag about how much riding we do.
With John’s recent accomplishment of 100,000 in 365 days we have respect for him and some might
think he is crazy for doing it. Any way you look at it, riding a motorcycle for that many miles in that short of
time takes a lot. I will be happy when I can do 1000 in a month and look forward to the day I can try for
1000 in 24 hours. I still have a goal of doing this Iron Butt ride to say that I have done it. Gary Andrew say’s
it is not much fun and I can see why, but I would still like to try it.
This coming year we will have plenty of opportunities to ride and add up those miles on our bikes.
Harry is our new ride coordinator and is doing a great job of mapping out fun routes for us to ride. We have
at least one ride per month on the calendar plus going to other Chapters meetings and other events coming
up.
The recent Game Night Social was very fun and a big success. Both Cindy and I would love to see
more of these and will offer to host one soon. We would like to encourage others to offer to host a game
night social. I for one think having all of our socials at a busy restaurant is not always the best way to have
fun with each other. We could have them at different times too, not always Tuesday evenings. Saturday
afternoons or Friday nights works for us and could be the best time to get the most participation. Let’s do
what we have been asked to do, think out of the box, come up with new ideas and have more fun. Until next
time, keep riding, keep having fun.

From the Chapter Ride Coordinator:
February Newsletter –
The 1st of the year started off with a great ride led by Jeff Duffield. We started out at the
Auburn Denny's with 11 bikes braving the brisk but sunny weather and toured what
seemed like every twisty back road in the Valley before making it to the Krane Korner
Inn for a fine lunch. As usual my Fish and Chips was excellent...I have no idea what
others ate but my food was great!!
We then headed off for another round of back-road extravaganza as we made out way to
the end of the ride in Covington. Many thanks to Jeff for finding all these roads, surely
they aren't on any map.
On the 20th Joe, Patty, Jeff, Gary, Dennis, Claudia and myself, along with Todd and Mike from 'A' met at the Chapter
'E' meeting in Kenmore. After the meeting Jeff, Gary, Dennis, Claudia and myself enjoyed a brisk and damp ride
through the Snoqualmie Valley before ending our trip at the Maple Valley Dairy Queen for some well deserved treats.
Of course Joe was not going to miss an excuse to have Ice Cream and he joined us at Dairy Queen as well.
Our next ride is scheduled on February 10th where we plan on visiting chapter 'Q' followed by a ride thru such
interesting sounding places as Roy and Ohop Bob.

2018 is Fun
Chapter V needs and new Couple of the Year. Other Chapters in
the District could be in need of a new Couple of the Year also. This
position is not a hard thing to do, be active in your Chapters
activities and try to be a good ambassador for GWRRA. We will be
doing our best to represent the District at events during the year and
at Wing Ding. With the change at the National level, each District
will be sending COY’s to Wing Ding to compete. At this point there
is not anything in place to promote Cindy and I getting to Wing Ding as was done on the
Region level last year. We would not object to activities and fund raisers to promote and help
cover the cost of us getting to WD 40 to represent the District.
Our District Rally flyer is now out on the web site, time to start making your plans to
attend. Located in Cashmere again at the Event Center/Fair Grounds. Halloween is the theme
with costumes and campsite decorating encouraged. We will have all the regular activities
like Light Show, Bike Show downtown and Bike/Trike games. Cindy and I will be helping to
gather Vendors to attend, so if you have any ideas or know anyone who would like to be a
vendor at our Rally, let us know.
Some fun events coming up are: District Education Workshop and Chapter E Surf
Watch March. Multi Chapter Meeting and Chapter N Brown Bag Auction in April. Chapter
M Fun Run, Chapter B Mall Show, and Dessert Spring Fling in May. There is never a dull
moment with our GWRRA District, get out there and participate in your Chapter events and
the District events. See you all soon at one of them.

Motorist Awareness
New Purchase
Recently a friend of mine purchased a new car and it came with many new safety
devices that are meant to give the driver a warning of some type that it feels some
corrective action must be taken. The action might just be an audible signal, a small
flashing light, or even the system controlling the movement of the vehicle.
If you have purchased a new vehicle lately (or plan on buying one), it may have one of
the following “enhancements”.
Electronic Stability Control – slows individual wheels during a turn to keep car on course
Lane-Keep Assist – detects lane departure and steers vehicle back into the correct lane
Adaptive Cruise Control – monitors the driver-set speed and distance to the vehicle ahead
Warning System – alerts the driver if a collision is imminent
Drowsiness Alert – uses automobile or driver data to indicate when you need a break
Driver attention system – electronic eye in steering wheel-mounted camera senses driver monitoring road. If
detected reading a book or applying makeup, the system will give series of audible and visual warnings to
refocus. Continued warnings determine motorist unresponsive and it will bring vehicle to a controlled stop.
Intuitive Pedestrian Detection with Active Steering – will apply the brakes and steer around a person if he/she
happens to be in its path, while staying within the current lane of traffic.
Blind Spot Information System and Oncoming Lane Mitigation system – help avoid collisions with vehicles in
adjacent lanes. It’s basically a light on the side view mirror that begins blinking anytime another vehicle is in
your blind spot. May also include an audio alert to make sure you know not to change lanes yet.
Heads-up displays help solve this problem by putting basic navigation information right in front of you on the
windshield so you never have to take your eyes off the road.
Now, I appreciate the efforts that the automobile industry has taken to present us with methods to make driving safer.
Soon driving will be totally automated and any accidents will be the vehicles fault. Until that time I ask myself if the
bells and whistles that alert the driver will be a distraction in and of themselves. It is scary to think that drivers will
depend more on the new “features” and less on their individual awareness.

FROM THE CHAPTER TECHNICAL ADVISOR:
Greetings Fellow Wing Nuts!
South Bound Honda is having their grand unveiling of the new Gold Wing on Saturday, Feb. 3rd at 9:00 am. I will be there!!!!!!!
According to a post from Facebook, the first Gold Wing to be sold was in Huntington Beach, Ca. It's brown sooo, it really doesn't count.
So, I'm going to give you the low down on something. If you really want to go for a ride with the chapter, let Harry lead the way. Gary, Jeff and I followed Harry and Claudia on a ride last Saturday starting at the chapter meeting in Kenmore for Chapter E. I'm really not sure where we were
most of the time but Harry has a way of finding some awesome winding roads that are really just awesome to ride. It was a little rainy but that didn't stop us from having a great time. Check out the chapter ride when you want to go somewhere fun and exciting.
For those of you that attended the planning meeting at Joe and Patty's you already know but for the rest, the first workshop of the year will be on April 21st. And of course it will be at the ever popular Harter residence.
I have a 1982 Yamaha Maxim 750 at Ken's that I got for free and just trying to get it running. Well, I got it running although it doesn't run very well. Next thing to do is pull the carbs and have them overhauled. I don't know anything about this so at some point I will be taking them to Dave at Enumclaw Motorsports to get them fixed. Not really in any hurry. Just a project bike at this point.
There will be an ARC-R class on the 28th of April. Sign up for the class will start at the Buckley workshop on March 10th.
You don't have to do the complete class every year. You can re certify for five years straight and then you must complete the entire class on the 6th year.
Happy riding!
Dennis

You too might get your number drawn, but remember if you want to win you
must show up at our meetings. and check the newsletter for your
membership number, it can be rather difficult. It might be spelled out or
just printed out as a number or both ways or broken up in an article. If you
find your number its good for a $10.00 dinner refund at the current
meeting, honored before 50/50 drawings.

We could certainly slow the aging process down if it had to work its way through Congress.
You know you’re getting old when you get that one candle on the cake. It’s like, “See if you can blow this
out.”
Growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional.
First you forget names, then you forget faces, then you forget to pull your zipper up, then you forget to pull
your zipper down.
