September, 2017 Chapter I Newsletter
Wow….what a successful Fun Run the members of Chapter I re-cently held! The weather could not have been better as 110 participants from various area Chapters, plus some family and friends, joined the members of Chapter MO-I for a FUN-filled day in Cape Girardeau County Park South on August 4. Chapters in attendance include Chapter MO-Z, Chapter IL-Q, Chapter MO-W2, Chapter MO-O and Chapter OK-B. A big thank you goes out to all who attended. It is because of your participation that Chapter MO-I can continue the tradition of furnishing 12 area families in need with our Christmas food baskets.
We would also like to again thank the many sponsors who gra-ciously donated to the Chapter helping make this event a success. These include the following:
• Burger King - Jackson • Lowe's
• C&H Grocery • McCombs Funeral Home
• Dairy Queen - Jackson • McDowell South RV
• Exxon Mobile Bi-State Convenience • Ron's Butcher Shop
• FDR Honda • Sam's Warehouse Club
• Fisher Auto Parts • Sassy Sisters
• Ford's Custom Bikes • Shawneetown Feed & Seed
• Fruitland Hardware • Smokehouse 61 BBQ and Deli
• Gilster Mary Lee • Walmart - Cape
• Hitt & Mis Auto • Walmart - Jackson
• Gary and Karen Huffman • Gene Wills Insurance Service
• Jones' Drug Store • Brent Wills Insurance Service
A tremendous Thank You to Gary and Karen Huffman who donated the chicken for the Fun Run. Also, thank you to Mike Biri who not only furnished the grill, but with his assistant Trey Chiles, prepared some excellent grilled chicken! Additionally, thanks to all the Chapter members who brought side dishes or helped serve 110 people. A job well done! The food was fantastic again this year because of your efforts, and we have already received queries asking how in the world we are going to top this year’s menu!
It is the contributions of all the members of Chapter I who donate their time, creativity and energy that make our annual Fun Runs successful. A huge THANK YOU to each and every one!
Please mark your calendar for next year’s Chapter I Fun Run to be held on Saturday, August 4, 2018. Please plan to attend and join the fun! It’s not the Destination….it’s the Journey! Ride safe, Bruce and Jan
MAP - IT’s A BINGO COVERALL WIN!!
About three years ago, our Chapter was volunteered by the MAP coor-dinator to sponsor 5th Friday BINGO at the Cape Girardeau Senior Center. When the requirements were explained to me, it seemed like a pretty easy-
peasy way to be in front of a captive audi-ence four times a year, having FUN while sharing our message of SAFETY and KNOWLEDGE. As such, this avenue has been well attended and supported by the chapter. With about one hour worth of physical effort, we reach out to an average of 30 senior citizens by providing ten, simple BINGO prizes complete with tri-fold informational brochures regarding motorist awareness. Riding in on our bikes when weather permits and
wearing our chapter shirts, we also provide an energetic BINGO caller, prize runners, and a few public service announcements in regard to motorist awareness as we deliver the info prize packet to a winner.
What kind of prizes do we hand out in a small, clear party bag?
Depending on your chapter resources and access to FREEBIEs in your community, you can be very creative in what you award to the partici-pants. We have provided a compilation of a mini candy bar, a piece of fruit, a $1 bill or gold coin, pens, pencils, holiday-themed items, a MAP keychain
or decal/sticker, DQ dis-count or other BOGO coupons, etc. The party bags can be purchased at any big box or party store for about $1 for 12 bags! Not only are we creating goodwill in our community, we are also reaching a people group that is known for increased acci-
dents, in part due to failing eyesight and reaction time, to take an extra moment and drive aware.
All Chapter members are invited to attend and assist during any month in the year that has a 5th Friday. We have two more opportunities this year: on September 29 and December 29. An added bonus is that you
can come earlier than the 12:30 PM start time and enjoy a nutritional lunch at the Senior Cen-ter before joining in with the fun! This is yet an-other way to make motorists aware that we are out there, because… …Ultimately, it’s your responsibility to ARRIVE ALIVE. Marlene Cloude, Chapter I M.A.P./District Director

TIRE WEAR
A few months back, I gave a talk about checking your tires. I mentioned that we need to get down on the ground and really look them over for cuts, punctures or other abnormalities that might affect the operation of the bike and/or the safety of the rid-ers. We should also keep track of the age and mileage on the tires.
Now I must swallow my pride and ask that you do as I say and not as I do. I am embarrassed to say that although I do check my tires quite often, apparently it’s not often enough. A couple of weeks ago while checking the tires, I noticed that the rear one was looking rather worn but then forgot about it. Last week I was sitting at the computer and decided to check how many miles I had ridden on said tire. It’s no wonder it looked so worn, it had 20,127 miles on it! I immediately inspected the tire again and realized that this is the first time that I had worn out the edges of the tread before the center.
In the past couple of months I have had a ball riding many of the twisty roads of southeast MO & southwest IL with the Old Man’s Ride, and also my new special friend, Connie Hulett. I’m sure this type of riding accelerated the wear on that part of the tire, but I should have never allowed it to get that bad. This is the second tire incident I know about this summer that could have led to serious injury or worse.
Please folks, watch the air pressure and wear on those tires. It only takes a few minutes and can save your life.
