Greetings fellow riders, if you are a fan of hot weather you should have been in heaven these past few weeks. Summer has arrived with a vengeance! Please remember to stay hydrated during this time of year and take plenty of cooling stops during your rides.

Late last month we attended the Georgia District Rally in Dalton, Georgia. Even though the weather was not as good as everyone would have liked it to be, we had a great time and enjoyed seeing lots of old friends. A big “thank you” to Larry and Pam Clemmer, the entire Georgia team and the Georgia members for putting on a great rally. We certainly enjoyed ourselves.

We had two great events in the District in July. The first was Chapter T’s annual fun day on the 15th in Hueytown, Al. The day was, as usual, a hot one but there was a really good turnout with 10 chapters represented. The venue was a cool relaxing one with plenty of good eats and fun for all. There were sightings of some famous entertainers during the course of the day including the Village People, Boy with tape on his face, Kenny Rogers, Roy and Archie from Hee Haw, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, Sonny and Cher, and Big and Rich, just to name a few. A big thank you to Phillip Teasley, the entire Chapter T team for putting on a great event. Also, on the 22nd, was Chapter U’s “Christmas in July” held in Ozark, Alabama. We didn’t get to attend this event due to a prior family commitment, but we understand a great time was had by all. There were several chapters represented and from what we were told, lots and lots of good food and desserts and a great time was had by all who attended. A big thank you to Bruce and Eileen and the entire Chapter U team for putting on another great event.

We would like to remind everyone about the Chapter visitation program that is going on right now. We have several chapters that have been out traveling to visit other chapters and turning in your score sheets but it seems we have some chapters that have not. We strongly encourage every chapter to participate in this program. It is fun and will be rewarding next May, at the Alabama District Rally, to some lucky chapter. The biggest key to enjoying this program is YOUR participation. If your chapter has not participated in this program yet, find out from your Chapter Director why not! It is very simple, just visit other chapters and keeps a record of it. That’s all there is to the program. Get out and enjoy the visits and perhaps your chapter can reap the rewards next May.

August brings us to our big event of the year, Wing Ding. We hope all of you have made plans to make the trip out to the Dallas/ Ft Worth area for this great event. There are so many things to do there that we don’t have the space to list them all. Just a couple that we would like to mention, Tuesday is selection day for the International Couple of the Year and our very own, Robert and Gail Brown, will be representing Region A. If you can possibly be there that morning please attend the selection program and cheer on Robert and Gail. Wednesday is Alabama’s day to help out and we will be working the day pass booth. We need 6-8 people to help out for a few hours during the day. It is lots of fun as you get to meet members from all over the world. At the end of your shift, as a thank you, you will receive a volunteer pin and ticket to the ice cream social. Please come by the booth and check with us during the day and join us for a little while. You will enjoy it!

P a g e | 4 In closing, as we go about our daily lives, please remember all of our men and women in uniform, our first responders and all of their families. These folks sacrifice so much for us so we can enjoy our freedom and way of life. When you see these folks out and about, please take a moment to say thank you and those, whom you may never see, please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Please be careful when riding in this heat and as always, we hope to see all of you out on the road,

Frank and Linda Teasley

A Celebration Service was held in Enterprise on July 16th to honor the passing of long time GWRRA member Bart Blake. There was a large turn-out of GWRRA members representing Region 1 and several Alabama and Florida chapters. Bart’s large and loving family – sister, wife, children, grand-children and great-grandchildren were there to remember and honor his life. Chapter U member Joe Smith (Fran) is in Southeast Medical Center. Joe was struck with stomach pain on Friday the 21st, but they didn’t know then how serious his problem was. Turns out it was his gall bladder, which doctors removed on Wednesday the 26th. His attack could be described as “sudden” and the surgery “at the last minute.” Joe is looking good and feeling better, though he has a lot of pain from the operation. As of Friday the 28th he was still in ICU, but expects to transfer to a “regular room” soon. Fran asks that Chapter U friends remember Joe in prayer. Larry and Carolyn York ask that we continue to remember them in prayer. Carolyn is still recovering from her hip injury in the February accident and still has pain. Larry says he’s OK, but “prayer is always a good thing.” Others on our prayer list are:

• Joan Hall - in a nursing home in Abbeville • J-Bird (Rufus) Lawhorn in home care in Enterprise. Yvonne encourages you to visit. • Jim and Elaine Land • Maravene Stum – recovering from a broken elbow

Hello South Alabama:

Gonna try to get this letter out without too many screw ups!! The biggest and most important is that there will no longer be a Region A after December 31st. Can you imagine? No Regions anywhere. As far as I can tell there are many changes coming to the way GWRRA conducts its business and most of them are at the District level and up. It looks like instead of Regions there will be six (6) different Directors for things like Member Enhancement, Rider Ed, etc. A couple Chapter changes is to the Offices of MED and MAD. They’ll become Chapter Social and Membership Coordinator and Chapter Ride Coordinator respectively. While I am talking about Region A being dissolved, the LAST REGION A RALLY is coming up in Oct., Lake Point, Eufaula, Al. You need to get up there and get all the memorabilia available, because it will be no more.

Just got a letter from Anita Alkire, President GWRRA, Dated July 3, 2017. She says that our membership dues are going up to $55 for individual, $65 for Family and $30 for Life Members effective 1 Aug 17. She also mentions that the GWRRA has only raised their Dues twice in the last 19 years. It’s even broken down by the day. Ind = $.15 a day: Fam = $.18 a day. And they have added a new Bennie called “SkyMed Travel Program” for free! Usually a $99.00 value. She says if ya want to extend your membership, do it BEFORE Aug 1, 2017. A few days from now. At first I thought SkyMed was the one that covers emergency air lifting incase of an accident, but as I read through it I realized it is a Travel cost savings program to reduce the cost of cruises, hotels and the like. I’m sure you will be hearing much more about these topics in the near future.

I’m gonna leave now and let ya think of what is going to take place in the future for GWRRA. Try to imagine how expensive it is to operate an association this big on the little bit of money they get.

Keep the wheels down and have fun;

Ron and Corky Alexander
