On the Cover “Quinn”The phone rang and it was Laura Myles. She was sending me a male pup she thought might turn out to be very special; was she ever right! On the way to Atlanta, I heard a song written by Bob Dylan and recorded by Manfred Mann that stuck in my mind — The Mighty Quinn. I picked my pup up at 5:45 am, and then started the two hour plus drive back home. He whined a little on the way, and I stopped once to let him stretch his legs and drink a little water. After we pulled into the drive, he checked out his new home and strutted around like he owned the place. I knew then he was The Mighty Quinn. He settled right in, sleeping in a crate by my bed at night, and adjusting to my crazy schedule. I’d never been to a dog show, but Laura set me up to meet Danielle Gerbert at a Greenville show. The rest is history. Quinn spent the past year out of the ring and in the field with me. He is an excellent pointer and retriever while also being a loving companion. His temperament is always the same, whether in the dog box, riding shotgun in my truck, playing with my grandsons, spending time in his run, or just laying on the kitchen floor. It is a joy having him as a family member. Donald Padgett

Judy Cheshire – Judging the GWPJudy Cheshire and her husband Doug Ljungren, have had GWPs since 1976, breeding under the “Heywire” and “Sure Shot” prefixes. Over the years, Judy has served the GWPCA as the AKC Gazette columnist, a contributor to the Wire-News, as Secretary and President, and is currently Chairman of the Judges Education Committee and the Show Events Advisory Committee. Judy has been active in show, field and obedience and is now enjoying a southern lifestyle in North Carolina.

Robin K. Nelson, DVM – GWP Health Topics & CHIC LiasonIn May of 1980, I graduated from Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, purchased my first GWP puppy, and moved to South Dakota to practice. In 1994, my husband Chuck Casanova and I sold our SD acreage and sheep, and we moved to the Omaha, Nebraska suburbs where I practice Small Animal Medicine. I enjoy training my “Outlaw” for obedience competition, gardening, and just enjoying life in the country with a fabulous husband and bird dog.

Richard Hirneisen – In the Company of DogsRichard is the President of the FDGWPC, and is recently retired from a lifelong career as a photographer.

I decided to retire as WireNews editor effective with this issue, because I’m too busy with other things in my work and personal life. Something had to give! I really enjoyed the design work over the last few years – it was like play for me, and I learned how to use new graphic design and photo editing software. Most of all, I enjoyed becoming an active member in the GWPCA and getting the opportunity to meet and interact with so many people in the club. I hope someone or two will volunteer to take on this role – it’s very rewarding and doesn’t take that much time. I was more involved with the design process than one would have to be. Now, I have templates set up for the table of contents and other features that run on a regular basis, so it’s just a matter of inserting some text and photos. The contributors are top-notch and very little editing is required. In addition, Lacey the publisher is very good and will be there to assist you as she

helped me over the years. I’ll also be available at times and willing to help. You will learn a lot, have something new to add to your resume and it might even take you down a new career path. Call me if you have any questions about the work, and what’s needed for hardware and software. I won’t be going to Nationals this year, so I hope those with cameras will snap lots of pictures to pass on to the new editor. In addition to photos, write-ups for the field trials, show and obedience events will be needed to make a great Nationals publication. It’s going to be an awesome Nationals with fierce competition - all of us who can’t be there want to see lots of pictures and read all about! Have a safe journey.

Ellen

Letter to the Editor

Hi Ellen, I think you’re doing a great job with the WireNews: although, I don’t like the idea of having to get some of the info online. Not all people own computers - I go to the library to use the computers. What I’m really missing in the WireNew is the sire/dam, breeder, and owner/handler info that is lacking in most of the field results. This info is most important to me, and in looking at the show results, it’s the last thing I look for. What gives? Mary E. Spies

Hi Mary, The field results are supplied by various club members attending the events, so I rely on the source. With the conformation results, the sire & dam

info is provided at time of registration so it comes across in the results - it is also available on the website of the superintendent for the shows; therefore, easily accessible. Thanks, Ellen

Ellen, When you fill out field trial and hunt test entries you include the sire and dam of each dog running, along with the breeder and the owner/ handler. The sire and dam are just as important to field people as they are to show people. I bet there would be an uproar if you stopped including the same info in the show results. Mary

Mary, Point taken. You may want to email someone with the Ft. Detroit Club and mention this topic to them. Maybe they can supply the sire and dam info for the Nationals field trial results that will be submitted to the editor. It would also be good to contact the Secretaries of the Local Clubs and request the same of them. Most GWPCA Local Clubs have field events, so they can consider your request. Ellen

Congratulations to the Top 5 AKC Agility GWP’s Invited to the 2011 AKC Agility Invitational!

The following dogs have earned an invitation to the 2011 AKC Agility Invitational in Orlando, FL this December. The top dogs were determined by the Top MACH Dog formula (Double Q’s x 10 + MACH points) that dogs have earned during the event qualifying period of July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011. Example: Dog has 520 MACH points and nine Double Q’s, therefore, (9 x 10 = 90) + 520, so their total “formula value” will be 610. If any of these dogs decline the invitation, AKC will invite the next dog on the list. 1 MACH Vom Grafenauer’s Free Spirit VCD1 RA XF Owner: A. To All AKC Pointing Breed Field Trial Participants and Officers:Well known Michigan Brittany field trialer and longtime AKC judge, Jeff Reed, after a 3-year legal fight, has

successfully forced the AKC to allow ATVs and horses in all AKC pointing breed stakes for qualified mobility disabled pointing breed field trial handlers. An official AKC letter states under what rules and regulations ATVs and horses in walking stakes can be used without AKC penalty. Medical information is not to be sent to the AKC, but to the particular state government controlling the field trial area.

For the first time since the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act was passed, the AKC was found to be in total non-compliance for 21 years in a continued effort to deny mobility disabled dog handlers a mobility accommodation to run their dogs with alternative means of conveyance such as ATVs and horses.

After receiving notice he could use a horse in any AKC stake that his dog is qualified to run, including ALL walking stakes, Jeff Reed said, “I spent well over $5,000 dollars in legal costs and was prohibited from AKC field trialing for 3 years to get this AKC Pointing Breed Rule Book changed to accommodate the disabled field trial person. I hope to see some folks, who were denied the opportunity to run their dogs with ATVs or horses, now run in any stakes they could not medically walk in to compete. In Michigan, 2 field trialers have already been approved to use an ATV or a horse in a walking pointing breed stakes.”

Mr. Reed will gladly answer all questions and concerns at [email protected]. Mr. Reed also can provide the official AKC letter with such rules and regulations.

B R E E D S T A N D A R D

The German Wirehaired Pointer Breed StandardGENERAL APPEARANCE The German Wirehaired Pointer is a well muscled, medium sized dog of distinctive appearance. Balanced in size and sturdily built, the breed’s most distinguishing characteristics are its weather resistant, wire-like coat and its facial furnishings. Typically Pointer in character and style, the German Wirehaired Pointer is an intelligent, energetic and determined hunter.

SIZE, PROPORTION, SUBSTANCE The height of males should be from 24 to 26 inches at the withers. Bitches are smaller but not under 22 inches. To insure the working quality of the breed is maintained, dogs that are either over or under the specified height must be severely penalized. The body is a little longer than it is high, as ten is to nine. The German Wirehaired Pointer is a versatile hunter built for agility and endurance in the field. Correct size and balance are essential to high performance.

HEAD The head is moderately long. Eyes are brown, medium in size, oval in contour, bright and clear and overhung with medium length eyebrows. Yellow eyes are not desirable. The ears are rounded but not too broad and hang close to the head. The skull broad and the occipital bone not too prominent. The stop is medium. The muzzle is fairly long with nasal bone straight, broad and parallel to the top of the skull. The nose is dark brown with nostrils wide open. A spotted or flesh colored nose is to be penalized. The lips are a trifle pendulous but close to the jaw and bearded. The jaws are strong with a full complement of evenly set and properly intermeshing teeth. The incisors meet in a true scissors bite.

NECK, TOPLINE, BODY The neck is of medium length, slightly arched and devoid of dewlap. The entire back line showing a perceptible slope down from withers to croup. The skin throughout is notably tight to the body. The chest is deep and capacious with ribs well sprung. The tuck-up apparent. The back is short, straight and strong. Loins are taut and slender. Hips are broad with the croup nicely rounded. The tail is set high, carried at or above the horizontal when the dog is alert. The tail is docked to approximately two-fifths of its original length.

FOREQUARTERS The shoulders are well laid back. The forelegs are straight with elbows close. Leg bones are flat rather than round, and strong, but not so heavy or coarse as to militate against the dog’s natural agility. Dewclaws are generally removed. Round in outline the feet are webbed, high arched with toes close, pads thick and hard, and nails strong and quite heavy.

HINDQUARTERS The angles of the hindquarters balances that of the forequarters. A straight line drawn vertically from the buttock (ischium) to the ground should land just in front of the rear foot. The thighs are strong and muscular. The hind legs are parallel when viewed from the rear. The hocks (metatarsus) are short, straight and parallel turning neither in nor out. Dewclaws are generally removed. Feet as in forequarters.

COAT The functional wiry coat is the breed’s most distinctive feature. A dog must have a correct coat to be of correct type. The coat is weather resistant and, to some extent, water-repellent. The undercoat is dense enough in winter to insulate against the cold but is so thin in summer as to be almost invisible. The distinctive outer coat is straight, harsh, wiry and flat lying, and is from one to two inches in length. The outer coat is long enough to protect against the punishment of rough cover, but not so long as to hide the outline of the dog. On the lower legs the coat is shorter and between the toes it is of softer texture. On the skull the coat is naturally short and close fitting. Over the shoulders and around the tail it is very dense and heavy. The tail is nicely coated, particularly on the underside, but devoid of feather. Eyebrows are of strong, straight hair. Beard and whiskers are medium length. The hairs in the liver patches of a liver and white dog may be shorter than the white hairs. A short smooth coat, a soft woolly coat, or an excessively long coatis to be severely penalized. While maintaining a harsh, wiry texture, the puppy coat may be shorter than that of an adult coat. Coats may be neatly groomed to present a dog natural in appearance. Extreme and excessive grooming to present a dog artificial in appearance should be severely penalized.

COLOR The coat is liver and white, usually either liver and white spotted, liver roan, liver and white spotted with ticking and roaning or solid liver. The head is liver, sometimes with a white blaze. The ears are liver. Any black in the coat is to be severely penalized.

GAIT The dog should be evaluated at a moderate gait. Seen from the side, the movement is free and smooth with good reach in the forequarters and good driving power in the hindquarters. The dog carries a firm back and exhibits a long, ground-covering stride. When moving in a straight line the legs swing forward in a free and easy manner and show no tendency to cross or interfere. There should be no signs of elbowing out. The rear legs follow on a line with the forelegs. As speed increases, the legs will convergetoward a center line of travel.

TEMPERAMENT Of sound, reliable temperament, the German Wirehaired Pointer is at times aloof but not unfriendly toward strangers; a loyal and affectionate companion who is eager to please and enthusiastic to learn.

Many judges don’t see significant numbers of German Wirehaired Pointers. This, in itself, makes it a difficult breed for some to evaluate. Additionally, it’s often misrepresented as a German Shorthaired Pointer with a rough coat and furnishings - it is, rather, a breed onto itself and not a “variety”. In fact, coat, which is heavily emphasized in our standard, is (#1) one of the most inconsistent characteristics of the breed and (#2) perhaps the most misunderstood. Our standard itself, just like many other breed standards, doesn’t always present a crystal clear picture of its intent. For example, even the simple statement that the GWP is a “medium sized dog” could be argued by someone comparing a Cocker Spaniel, an English Springer Spaniel and a German Wirehaired Pointer.

When a class of German Wirehaired Pointers enters the ring, get a first impression of the dog that you’re judging. The silhouette of the dog should be immediately identifiable as a GWP. Is the outline pleasing, is the dog balanced, is there substance without coarseness? Do you get the impression of athleticism and good capacity for muscling? The Wirehair is first and foremost a versatile sporting dog and you should be able to envision the dog in front of you working in the field. Versatility, in this breed, refers to a dog that hunts both fur and feather, can adapt its way of going to varied terrains, can find and point game and can retrieve both on land and in water. As you put your hands on the dog to evaluate him, keep in mind that this dog should be sound and functional. “Function” is the key to all aspects of the standard. For example, if you have a dog with light eye and one with a soft, open coat, keep in mind that the dog can see with an undesirable colored eye but cannot be protected in dense, harsh cover and cold water with a bad coat. Prioritize to some degree by function.

Head: From the side, the head should give a rectangular appearance. Facial furnishing (beard and eyebrows) should be present, but not overdone. Eyebrows are never scissored. GWP’s shouldn’t be trimmed to look like terriers or Giant Schnauzers. Don’t necessarily penalize a dog for sparse facial furnishings. Very often excellent coated dogs do not have abundant furnishings. Remember that coat on the dog’s skull should be naturally short and close fitting. The bite is scissors; the eyes and nose are brown. Eye rims should be close fitting to keep out

irritating seeds, grasses and other debris. Unlike what may be permissible in a GSP or a Pointer, the head is liver (a blaze is acceptable) and the ears are liver. A good head is certainly desirable; in fact, when choosing a puppy, it’s something I particularly look for because it looks up at me so often! But as far as function is concerned, as long as the bite is correct and dentition is adequate and the under jaw is sufficiently deep to carry game, a good head is icing on the cake.

Neck and Body: The neck should be slightly arched and have enough length and strength for the dog to retrieve and easily carry a good-sized pheasant or goose. Proportionately, the body from the sternum (the breast bone) to ischium (the buttocks) is slightly longer than from withers to ground. The back is short and strong with a perceptible slope from withers to croup. Perceptible means that you should be able to recognize that there is a slope, it doesn’t mean exaggerated. Ribs are well sprung and tuck-up is apparent. The tail is a continuation of the spinal column and should be carried at or above the horizontal when the dog is moving and alert. Although the standard calls

for the tail to be docked to approximately two-fifths of its original length, this is often a personal preference and the docked length is obviously man-made. The length of a docked tail is not a reason to ever fault an otherwise good dog.

Forequarters and Hindquarters: Shoulders should be well laid back with hindquarter angulation balancing the front. Although balance and symmetry are important to overall appearance and movement, this doesn’t mean that a dog that is straight in both front and rear is correct. Feet are round to slightly oval in outline, high arched with toes close and pads thick and hard. A tight foot with good depth of pad protects the dog from stones, sand spurs, burrs, thorns and other sundry hazards on the ground.

Coat: The coat must be functional. The standard states that a dog must have correct coat to be of correct type. Unfortunately, coats are varied. Even more unfortunate, from a judging perspective, is that a coat can be manufactured. For example, a coat that is too long or too profuse but that has good texture, can be trimmed to present a flat-lying, correct coat. Even a relatively soft coat can be worked over time to present an adequately correct texture. I think when judging, if wire-coated dogs are not familiar to you, keep in mind that the nature of the desired coat should require a minimal amount of care. It is a double coat that is coarse, wiry and protective, weather resistant and to some extent, water-repellant. In reality, the desired coat does not require extensive stripping, scissoring, clippering or chalking to enhance texture or appearance. Obviously the topcoat should have a coarse texture and undercoat should be present.

Color: The standard says that the coat is liver and white. It then describes patterns (ticking and roaning) and states that “Any black in the coat is to be severely penalized.” As the standard has already stated that “the coat is liver and white”, this refers to any black in a liver and white dog. Nowhere in the standard does it state that a black and white dog is acceptable but should be severely penalized, nor does it disqualify black and white. The standard, however, does call for a liver head, liver ears and a brown nose. Judges have pointed and finished black and white dogs. If our standard calls for a liver and white dog, and a judge puts up a black and white dog, then do you think that same judge would put up a russet colored Weimaraner? The Weimaraner standard calls for a grey dog but there is no disqualification for a russet colored dog. I don’t think any judge would point or finish

a Weimaraner that was any color than that called for in the standard. If in doubt about the color of the dog, remember that a liver and white dog will have a liver nose and a black and white dog will have a black nose. Gait: Movement is the proof of the pudding. Gait should be fluid without wasted motion. Good reach and good driving power are imperative. Correct foot fall and timing contribute to a dogs’ ability to cover ground without tiring. Topline should remain firm.

Size: Dogs are 24-26 inches, bitches slightly less but not under 22 inches. The concern with size should pertain to how it affects the working ability of the animal. The benchmark is a dog that can endure in the field.

Temperament: A GWP may be aloof to strangers. This caution should not be misinterpreted as shyness. Temperament should always be sound and aggression toward people should never be tolerated.

Breeders of German Wirehaired Pointers have made every effort to keep bench and field dogs “one breed”. Considering the total number of GWP’s registered, we have a very large number of Dual Champions and dual titled dogs. Judges can help us in our endeavor by keeping the working qualities of the breed in mind when evaluating our dogs. Above all, please don’t fault judge. Standards often point out faults and areas to be penalized without bothering to emphasize the importance of positive characteristics. Consider the dog as a total package and remember that our goal is to continue to produce dogs that can do what they were originally intended to do - hunt long, hard and intelligently.

Michigan, late March, not quite winter, not quite spring. I’m running one of my wirehairs with my good buddy Paul’s Brit on a big parcel of state land. The sky turns dark as a huge snowstorm rolls in from the west. Soon the landscape is draped in white, visibility down to a couple hundred yards.

Paul hears it first, says it sounds like beagles after a rabbit. I remind him that rabbit-hunting season ended one week ago, so probably not beagles.

Then I hear it - audible one moment, inaudible the next, drifting in and out of the snowy sky. It sounds like children laughing. But we’re out in the boondocks, nothing for miles around. There’s something familiar about the sound though, something that takes me back down memory lane, way back.

Fifty-some years back . . .I’m pulling my sled down a snow-covered gravel

road that follows the shoreline of Loon Lake, not far from the little beach where most of us kids from my neighborhood hang out on summer days, swimming in the cool lake until our lips turn blue and our teeth chatter.

It’s only early December but the lake has already iced over, and the snow is a foot deep and falling so hard it’s almost a whiteout. I Three canvas bags, crammed full of newspapers, are piled on my sled. I have more than one hundred customers on my route, spread out over a mile and a half.

As I near a customer’s house near where the Clinton River flows out of the lake, I hear what sounds like a flock of Canada geese lifting off the open river. But they sound different, higher pitched than Canadas, with a different rhythm to their voices.

The calling grows louder, coming right towards me. I stop to hear it better. Dark blurs materialize out of the whirling snow just above

me — black, seemingly disembodied wingtips pumping up and down. I get a glimpse of pale orange bills opening and closing as the geese talk back and forth about whatever geese talk about. Their white bodies are nearly invisible in the driving snow.

As mysteriously and abruptly as the flock appears, it fades from view, white bodies first, then black wingtips, then voices, until all that’s left is the quiet of the snow and me standing there, transfixed.

Next day in the school library I ferret out a copy of Peterson’s Guide to the Birds of North America. I look up “geese.” I find chen caerulescens, snow goose. The distribution map indicates that snow geese are rarely seen in

our part of the country. These were

the first I had ever seen.

Fast forward fifty years or so . . .

Paul and I call our dogs in to heel and leash them up. The dogs reluctantly stay beside us, anxious

to move, not interested in the chattering of geese somewhere up there in the sky where they can’t scent them.

The snow blows and visibility drops. Can’t see much more than the reach of 12-gauge.

When I tell Paul that a flock of snow geese is coming our way, he says he’s never seen a snow goose.

The flock’s busy, raucous voicing is almost directly overhead before we see the black wingtips and the pale orange bills - the nearly snow-white bodies, materialize in the blur of snow.

Low and fast, two skeins of snow geese, one following closely behind the other, fly directly over us and disappear into the snowy sky.

Their ghostly crying lingers for a few seconds more.

We don’t say much, unleash our dogs and move on. Our dogs are glad to get moving again.
