Hugs for Soldiers playeda significant role in lastyear’s festival and will do soagain this year. The grouphas coordinated the partici-pation of 2-69 Armor “Pan-ther” soldiers from FortBenning. In addition toleading the 10 a.m. parade, the soldiers will be at theHugs for Soldiers booththroughout the festival, receive special recognitionfrom the City of Suwanee, and attend a special dinner

hen the Suwa-nee Day festivalwelcomed about50 soldiers from

the U.S. Army’s 2-69Armor Battalion based atFort Benning last year, itwas a bit bittersweet as thesoldiers were to ship out afew short weeks followingthe festival for a tour ofduty in Iraq. This year,Suwanee Day welcomesback soldiers from the 2-69with an attitude of grati-tude, relief, and celebrationas the soldiers are return-ing from their nearly year-long deployment as part ofOperation Iraqi Freedom.

Leading the group thisyear and serving as the2010 honorary grand mar-shal is Capt. Lars Harstad, the battalion’s rear detach-ment commander, who isstanding in for Lt. Col.

Robert Ashe (last year’sgrand marshal), who still isdeployed in Iraq but will bereturning stateside shortly.

During his 12 years ofservice to his nation,Harstad has receivednumerous awards andhonors, including theBronze Star Medal, ArmyCommendation Medal,Army Achievement Medal,Drill Sergeant Badge, andParachutist Badge to namejust a few.

Harstad also has heldmany positions during hisArmy career. As a drillsergeant for three years

(one as senior drillsergeant), he trained morethan 2,000 soldiers. As amilitary transition teammember, he conductedabout 80 combat patrolswith the Iraqi Civil DefenseCorps and trained morethan 400 Iraqi soldiers inKirkuk, Baquoba, andTikrit.

Joining Harstad will behis wife and two of his fourchildren. Also in attendancewill be Ashe's wife, Andrea, and their two children.

In addition to marchingin the parade, the approxi-mately 50 soldiers of the 2-69 Armor attending Suwa-nee Day will receive spe-cial recognition both afterthe parade and before the8:15 p.m. John Berry per-formance.

The soldiers’ presence atSuwanee Day is made pos-sible through Hugs for Sol-diers.

Refiguring flatwarePeggy & Grady NolanLong-time Suwanee

Day vendors Peggy andGrady Nolan have“carved out” a uniqueniche with knives –forks and spoons, too –turning vintage flat-ware into handcraftedtreasures. The couplerefashions silver-platedflatware into beautifuljewelry pieces, includ-ing bracelets, neck-laces, watches, and ear-rings. In addition, theNolans craft windchimes, lamps, and budvases utilizing teapots, creamers, and sugarbowls.

Although she can’tremember exactly where,

it was Peggy Nolan whofirst came across this artstyle and felt that shecould recreate it. Sheasked her husband for alittle assistance, andnow, she chuckles,“Well, that was the endof it for me.” GradyNolan eventually tookover the artwork andhas been producingthese unique pieces for adecade.

In addition to theirown design ideas, PeggyNolan says that a lot ofideas come from cus-tomers. “We love theinteraction with the peo-ple in the designprocess.”

The Nolans, who livein Demorest, Georgia,

are both retired – Peggyfrom years of service asa customer service rep-resentative at StandardTelephone Company(now owned by Alltel)and Grady from theU.S. Forest Service.

“Suwanee Day is ourfavorite show,” PeggyNolan says, notingthat it was theirdaughter-in-law, wholives in the Suwaneearea, who first madethem aware of the fes-tival. This year marksthe Nolans’ tenthSuwanee Day. Knownfor keeping their priceslow, the Nolans won’tdisappoint this year, keeping prices in arange from $6 to $45.

Realism with justenough abstract

John DukeRealism has a very

personal meaning forSnellville artist JohnDuke, one that extendsbeyond the images oncanvas that he creates.

Just four years agoDuke received a kidneytransplant, which in andof itself would signifi-cantly impact anyone’s

outlook on life. Howev-er, it was the donor’shumanity that exceededhis imagination. Afterlearning of his plight,Duke’s donor, a strangerto him, got tested specif-ically to determine if shewas a match with him. Results showed that theonly way that they couldbe a closer match is ifthey were twins. Thisuncommon act of kind-ness helps Duke tell acompelling story abouteveryday things via hispaintings.

Duke became a full-time artist after losing hisjob in the printing indus-try, where he had workedfor 20 years. “I was ini-tially told to do birds onbeaches,” says Dukeabout advice received inthose early days. Much ofhis early work was com-

While his initialinterest was in surreal-ism – things biggerthan life – the artist’sprimary focus today ison “realism with justenough abstract tomake it art.” Subjectsfor his works arediverse, ranging frompets to flora.

Watercolors areDuke’s medium ofchoice, but he also doespencil portraits withgraphite and color, etchings, and silkscreens. “I tend to takephotographs of things

that interest me – dif-ferent locations innature to everydaythings.” Now in goodhealth thanks to thekindness of a localstranger, it’s easy toappreciate Duke’s keeninterest in the beauty ofthe things around him.

Duke has been a partof the Suwanee artscene recently, partici-pating in an Art Walkevent at Town Center inJuly.

At Suwanee Day, hewill offer various sizesof framed andunframed original art-work as well as prints.Pieces may be pur-chased for $10-$15 for
