SUMMARY OF CONTENTS

UPDATES & HIGHLIGHTS Change is constant. You need only observe the world around us to realize it. Advances in technology and a shift toward economic globalization are leveling playing fields, raising the stakes and transforming the way you live and work. Deciding where and how our alumni pursue their personal and professional lives given these rapid changes and often unpredictable environments has become a primary objective. For many, it is their greatest challenge. The George Washington Alumni Association in partnership with GW’s Office of Alumni Relations endeavors to support its alumni through these challenges. By creating opportunities for involvement in the life and support of GW, the GWAA and the Office of Alumni Relations work to strengthen the relationship between alumni and the University and between alumni and the lifelong and world-wide community to which they belong. Alumni engagement at GW has changed considerably over the years. It is now not enough to engage alumni through their graduating class or their school-affiliated degrees. Our alumni interact with the University and their peers on many levels. Their interests are increasingly multifaceted and ever-changing. For these reasons, and as this report details, we have broadened our outreach and engagement efforts to better meet your needs—in terms of affiliations and interests, as well as life stages and experience. The University continues to invest in the area of alumni relations and our alumni have responded, in turn, with their time, talents, and treasure—both for GW and its students and their fellow alumni. In the following pages, you’ll see just how far we’ve come:

*

To date, more than 146 alumni events took place across the country and globe, engaging 9,368 alumni, students, and friends in FY10.* The breadth and depth of programming over the annual Alumni Weekend, along with the continued development of our alumni clubs and groups, speak to the emerging and varied interests within a vast alumni community. An increased focus on international alumni programs and alumni career services have considerably expanded markets for engagement and created new and innovative ways to communicate and network. By establishing several high profile events like the GW Global Forum, GW’s Summit on Entrepreneurship, and the Women and Philanthropy Forum, programming now cuts across academic disciplines and industry sectors to coalesce alumni around world issues and common interests.

Ask yourself, is the Alumni Association meeting your needs? What, if anything, are we missing? Do our events, programs, benefits and services resonate with you? If so, we hope you join us in our efforts to develop a richer alumni community for the benefit of its membership and GW. And, of course, we welcome your feedback along the way on how we might continue to improve our alumni engagement efforts.

ALUMNI WEEKEND UPDATES & HIGHLIGHTS ALUMNI WEEKEND 2009

4 Days 70+ Events 2,055 Alumni October 1-4 & Reunions Attendees

Since 2007, Alumni Weekend has been a stand-alone event and has become a successful engagement tool and a primary vehicle for attracting alumni, across life-stages, back to campus.

Schools that traditionally host separate Alumni Weekends collaborated on various events for Alumni Weekend 2009 to enhance the sense of community among all alumni. The GW Medical School, Law School, School of Business, and Mount Vernon College campus hosted reunion activities in conjunction with “central” Alumni Weekend. This approach allowed for specific school-based programming to take place alongside general, all-campus events. The result was more co-mingling among alumni and boosted attendance at general activities.

ALUMNI WEEKEND 2010

MARKETING STRATEGY: A new and innovative approach to publicize Alumni Weekend

includes the Where’s George? marketing campaign. This year’s save-the-date card invites alumni to send photos of themselves with George using social media tools.

Alumni can share photos with us via Facebook and Twitter, in addition to more traditional methods of email and standard mail.

The save-the-date card also features a Quick Response code, a two-dimensional bar code that directs people to our website through the use of the camera on their smart phones.

Internet connectivity has become almost constant, thus the Where’s George campaign seeks to create a virtual buzz about Alumni Weekend 2010.

EVENTS: The weekend will kickoff with a special concert featuring a favorite Grammy-

nominated band from the 1990s. The signature All-Alumni Kickoff Party and Taste of GW—where foods from restaurants owned and operated by fellow GW alumni are served—will continue to take place alongside smaller events such as Back to Thurston, lectures, tours, and the reunion class parties. For the first time, President Knapp will host an all-alumni event at his home, the F Street House, during Alumni Weekend. Also new, the Deans Breakfast will provide alumni the opportunity to meet and mingle with deans from the various schools across campus.

8

After graduation, you and your fellow alumni fanned out to more than 150 countries around the globe. We know where GW helped you to go, but now we wonder, where can you take George?

STUDENT, YOUNG ALUMNI & REGIONAL PROGRAMS UPDATES & HIGHLIGHTS REGIONAL ALUMNI PROGRAMS

30 Regional Clubs 50% Increase in Clubs Throughout the U.S. Over FY09

All 30 of the regional alumni clubs are volunteer-driven, sponsoring events that are both planned and implemented by alumni volunteers. This is further indication of continued alumni engagement beyond the Foggy Bottom campus.

STRONG CROSS-CAMPUS PARTNERSHIPS: The partnership with the Office of Government,

International and Community Relations has resulted in 3 successful programs geared towards specific alumni populations:

Alumni in the Federal Government, DC Government, and on Capitol Hill Through this partnership, the accuracy of alumni data is enhanced; our relationships to

alumni in high-profile positions of public administration have improved, and the GW brand is better conveyed to all our alumni engaged in public service.

In FY09, nearly 600 alumni were brought together through three programs as a result of this partnership.

ANNUAL ENTERTAINMENT PANEL: HOLLYWOOD & POLITICS 03/17

6TH ANNUAL CAPITOL HILL ALUMNI RECEPTION 05/11

MOVING FORWARD, the regional alumni programs team will continue to develop new clubs with greater autonomy; as more alumni volunteers emerge, they will be incorporated into pre-existing alumni clubs and encouraged to start new clubs where applicable. Additionally, our relationship with Government, International, and Community Relations will afford the ability to add programs for our large population of alumni working for the state government of Virginia, as well as alumni in the military.

STUDENT-ALUMNI PROGRAMS

50 Dinner with Alumni 3 Speed Networking Nights 4-6 How Do I Become A… Programs Annually Annually Series Annually

Student-Alumni programs are engaging students in the alumni experience from the moment they express interest in GW. Building on this momentum, student-alumni engagement will place even greater emphasis on the entering legacy student and graduate student population.

STRONG CROSS-CAMPUS PARTNERSHIPS: Office of Undergraduate Admissions – recruiting alumni volunteers who assist with college

fairs and prospective student interviews. Approximately 1,100 alumni participate in this program.

Colonial Inauguration (CI) – the GWAA participates on many levels, including the recruitment of alumni volunteers to participate at CI regional dinners, tabling at the services fair, and through the GWAA President who speaks at the closing session.

Senior Class Gift Campaign (See Page 22) – by working together to send a unified message of involvement and philanthropy to the senior class.

PROGRAMMING ALSO INCLUDES: the Dinner with Alumni Program, the How Do I Become A... series, and Speed Networking Nights.

YOUNG ALUMNI NETWORK (YAN)

AN EXPANDING NETWORK: Engagement through YAN continues to grow; both the DC and NYC networks hosted a variety of events in FY10, including happy hours, financial planning seminars, and networking breakfasts.

The YAN brand is continually being developed through special benefits and services, a monthly e-newsletter, and other targeted marking.

NEW YOUNG ALUMNI NETWORKS in key regions are being developed in collaboration with pre-existing regional alumni clubs. Key areas include Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles.

Affinity Reunion: First Ever Athletics Reunion Attendance

Affinity Groups at Alumni Weekend 2009 In an attempt to market Alumni Weekend as more than just a weekend of class reunions, a major affinity reunion (the Greek Reunion) was added to the schedule of events in 2008. In 2009, Alumni Clubs & Groups continued this new tradition by hosting the first ever Athletics Reunion in partnership with GW Athletics. This partnership produced an attendance of 90 alumni athletes and 19 additional events specifically for this alumni community. In addition to the affinity reunion, a number of alumni affinity groups used the GWAA Grant Program to assist in hosting events during Alumni Weekend. For example, the Black Alumni & Latino Alumni Associations hosted receptions, which included the BAA’s IMPACT awards that recognized Black alumni for their individual achievements. Other affinity group events included the Multicultural Alumni Happy Hour, receptions for LGBT Alumni and the Green Alumni Network, and a Shabbat dinner.
