LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
2 PLAYBOOK FOR SUCCESS
Dear Potential Partners of Laker Athletics,
Grand Valley State University strives for excellence in everything we do. Laker Athletics has a tra-dition of excellence in our athletics competition and in the classroom. Competitively, the Lakershave won seven straight NACDA Directors Cups, which is the all sports trophy nationally for NCAADivision II. In addition, over 60% of our student-athletes consistently achieve a 3.0 GPA or better. Our student-athletes give back as well with our 20 varsity sports programs and 550 student-athletesannually volunteering over 3,000 community service hours to various or-ganizations. Our mission at GVSU is “Educating students to shape theirlives, their professions, and their societies”and we believe our intercolle-giate athletics programs help fulfill that mission.
We have three major goals as an athletic department for our programsand student-athletes. We refer to them as our “Fundamentals for Suc-cess”. They are as follows:1. Create the best learning environment possible. Again, these stu-dents come to college to get an education. While we are very proud ofour former student-athletes who achieve success in professional sports, the fact of the matter is that 99% of our student-athletes will never havethat chance. We believe it is our job to create an environment where theycan get their degree from GVSU and prepare them for the rest of their lives in the “real world”.2. Challenge our teams to competitive greatness. We are going to work hard to be the best wecan be competitively. We define competitive greatness as coming through with your best effort andbest performance when it is most needed. That is hard to achieve! We want our student-athletesto look back on their careers and know they became the best student, best athlete and best citizenpossible. Our student-athletes also know that they will have to learn how to overcome adversity, which as we all know is a big part of success in life. 3. Commit the energy necessary for success. As you know, it takes hard work and commitmentto be successful in anything, whether it is business or college sports. I am very proud of our entirestaff here at Laker Athletics. From coaches to support staff, they work hard, they know their rolesand they care about kids. We do what we do in order for these young people to have success andmany people on our campus work together to accomplish this.
While this is not complicated by any means, we believe in keeping it simple and staying focused onthe day-to-day journey of helping young people grow and develop. If we do that, with the greatschool that we have here, we will achieve good results.
It takes a lot of effort and support by a lot of people to achieve the level of success that we have ac-complished and we could not do it without the wonderful support of our sponsors. More than that,we want to develop a relationship with our partners so that you too can take pride in the success ofour student-athletes at GVSU. I would like to thank you in advance for considering a sponsorshipof the Grand Valley State athletics program. GO LAKERS!
Sincerely,
Director of Athletics
