Why is Guy Fawkes Night so important in England?
• Guy Fawkes is the person most associated with the Gunpowder Plot to blow up James I ,the Houses of Lords and Commons when James opened Parliament on November 5th 1605.
Houses of Parliament
Gunpowder Plot• Fawkes and his group put 36 barrels of
gunpowder in cellars under the Houses of Parliament in London, ready to set off a massive explosion.
Why didn´t it work?
• A member of the group sent a letter to the King to tell him of the plans.
• Guy Fawkes was arrested.
• He was hung, drawn and quartered.
How do we celebrate this day?
• Bonfires• A statue of Guy Fawkes in burned in
every village/town/city.• Lots of fireworks!• We eat baked potatoes.
