State 4-H News
What does it mean to be a good citizen or a leader? Are you being a strong civic
leader for your community, country, and world? Explore these topics at Citizenship
Washington Focus (CWF). The 2018 trip is set for June 15-23 at the National 4-H
Conference Center in the Washington, DC, area. CWF is more than just another DC
field trip. 4-H’ers learn essential civic leadership skills and leave with the tools that
will allow them to bring about real change in their communities. Learn more and register at http://
www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/cwf.
The objective of these grants is to stimulate local 4-H clubs in Iowa to plan and carry out community improve-
ment activities by providing “seed money” needed to make the projects successful. Funding has been secured
to offer DuPont Pioneer Seed Grants for the 2017-18 4-H year. Grants will range from a minimum of $50 to a
maximum of $500. Awards will be made directly to the clubs through the Iowa 4-H Foundation from DuPont Pio-
neer as soon as selections are made.
Applications are due to County Extension and Outreach Offices by Jan. 16, 2018, then forward to State 4-H
Office no later than Jan. 30, 2018.
Final decisions will be made by a committee of volunteers and staff members. All applicants should receive
letters by the end of March.

DUPONT PIONEER SEED GRANTS
The 4-H Pledge, written almost 100 years ago, is relevant today in a climate where the civil discourse often misses the mark for loyalty, service, and better living for community, country, and world. The historic roots of 4-H where youth 'learn by doing' in partner-ship with caring adults is engaging Iowa youth in global conversations that build on their assets to improve the civility of their community, country, and world.

6 Iowa 4-H Delegates Visit Kosovo!
Nicole Hobson's Kosovo Experience
When people hear that I went to an international camp in Kosovo through my 4-H club, I hear a variety of responses. The most common among them is, “Where exactly is Kosovo?” I always
laugh because last year I would have asked the same question! The only thing I knew about the country was that there had been a war recently. Little did I know, it would soon become a country I would never forget.
After three flights, a couple car rides, and a few bumps in our travel plans (including a flight cancellation), we finally arrived at TOKA International camp in the small country of Kosovo. Kosovo is located a couple countries North of Greece and South of Serbia. I met people from all across Europe, from Romania, Macedonia, Poland, Italy, Finland, and of course, Kosovo. I thought it would be difficult integrating people from such different backgrounds, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. Immediately, it felt like we were family. We shared what our lives were like at home and what
we wanted for the future. We talked politics, environment, globalization, economics, but also about family, friends, passions, and, as all students, the horrors of homework that awaited us as the summer came to an end. It simultaneously felt as though we were all the same and as though we were all different. I learned some basic Albanian and Romanian and also taught everyone American slang words and traditions like the butter cow. It seemed as though we had known each other for years.
As I stood there, surrounded by my new friends from around the world, I began to think about my future and where I wanted to be. I realized that I could not go back to living solely to know and help the people in the state of Iowa. My community is a not just those in my city, state, or even the US. I am a part of something much bigger, a global community. We all live such different lives, speak different languages, and have different rich cultures. However, we have the same hopes, fears, and passions. I was surprised to find people living in environments so different from Iowa were more similar to
me than some of the people in my own high school. I then understood that not exploring the cultures and people of distance places leaves us with a missed opportunities and connections. I may not know where I’ll be in ten years, but with this newfound realization, I do know that I can be anywhere in the world. Whether I’m in the US, Kosovo, Finland, or some new country I haven’t seen yet, I’m excited to meet new people and take my place in this amazing and close-knit global community.
