2017-18 Golden Gusties Game Notes

ST. PETER, Minn. - The No. 4-ranked Gustavus women’s hockey returns home to Don Roberts Ice Rink on Friday for the first time since Dec. 6, taking on No. 8-ranked St. Thomas for a home-home series. Friday’s game starts at 7 p.m., while Saturday’s game in Mendota Heights begins at 2 p.m. The Gusties enter the confer-ence series on a seven-game winning streak at 10-1-1 overall and 5-1 in the MIAC, while the Tommies are 8-3-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the league.

LAST TIME OUT... The Gusties swept a non-conference away series at St. Norbert College last weekend, win-ning both games 3-0. Kristen Cash scored her first ca-reer game-winning goal in Friday’s victory, while Kait-lyn Klein and Laura Johnson added insurance goals. In Saturday’s win, Erica Power scored what proved the be the game-winner, and Klein added a pair of goals for a three-goal weekend. Amanda DiNella earned the win on Friday, while Lauren Tremblay recorded her first ca-reer win on Saturday after playing 20 minutes in goal.

FIRST LINE SUCCESS… The first line consisting of Kaitlyn Klein, Erica Power, and Diana Draayer leads the team in scoring. Klein leads the team with 12 goals and 18 points, Power has a team-high 10 assists along with 15 points, and Draayer has 14 points on seven goals and seven assists. The first line has accumulated 47 points, accounting for over half of the team’s scoring (50.5 percent).

SEASON 21… The Gustavus women’s hockey program enters its 21st season of existence in 2017-18. The pro-gram was established in 1997 and joined the MIAC in 1998. In their first year in the MIAC, the Gusties claimed the league championship, starting a dynasty unrivaled by any league opponent. Gustavus has 14 MIAC Cham-pionships and has appeared in the NCAA Champion-ships 12 times. Entering the 2017-18 season, the Gusties have compiled an all-time record of 413-120-36 for a winning percentage of .757.

MIAC DYNASTY... Gustavus captured its league-record 14th MIAC regular season championship last season, going 13-2-3 in the league. St. Thomas is second in the league with four MIAC titles. Augsburg and Saint Mary’s have two titles each, while Bethel has one championship in the 23-year history of MIAC wom-en’s hockey. Last season, Gustavus reached the NCAA Championships for the 12th time in the 16-year history of the national tournament. Only Middlebury (14), El-mira (13), and Plattsburg State (13) have more appear-ances at the NCAA Championships.

GUSTIES PICKED TO WIN THE MIAC...The Minnesota In-tercollegiate Athletic Conference conducted its presea-son coaches’ poll and the Gusties are picked to finish first in the league. Gustavus received eight first place votes for a total of 80 points. Augsburg was picked second with 64 points, while Hamline and St. Thomas are tied for third with 59 points. OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN... The 2017-18 captains are Diana Draayer (Sr., Deephaven, Minn.), Erica Power (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.), and Allie Stanger (Jr., Paynes-ville, Minn.). Draayer and Power were captains last year as well, while Stanger wears the ‘C’ on her jersey for the first time. Power returns as the team’s lead-ing point-scorer with 23 points last season on 10 goals and a team-high 13 assists. Power also led the team with a +13 plus-minus. Draayer was third on the team in scoring with 18 points on seven goals and 11 assists. Stanger played in all 29 games with two goals and five assists for seven points.

LAND OF 10,000 LAKES… This season’s roster includes 25 student-athletes, 22 of which hail from Minnesota. The three players not from in-state include goalie Amanda DiNella (Jr., Oakbrook Terrace, Ill.), forward Tegan Rodriguez (So., Sioux City, Iowa), and goalie Lauren Tremblay (Fy., Hayward, Wis.).

ALL-AMERICAN RETURNS… Amanda DiNella returns as the Gusties’ goalie after becoming the program’s first All-American at the goalie position. DiNella was select-ed to the 2017 NCAA Division III CCM Women’s Hock-ey All-American West First Team after finishing the 2016-17 season with a .947 save percentage, 0.92 goals against average, .813 winning percentage, along with eight shutouts – all marks that topped the statistical leaders in the MIAC. DiNella became the 15th player and fifth sophomore in Gustavus women’s hockey history to earn All-America distinction.

MOST IMPROVED… The 2016-17 season proved to be the greatest turnaround in program history for the Gusties. The 2015-16 season saw Gustavus finish with an overall record of 9-11-5. Last season, the Black and Gold improved to 19-7-3 overall, a difference of seven games improved (to determine games improved, add the difference in victories between the two seasons to the difference in the losses, then divide by two; ties not counted). Only Morrisville State (9 games) and Man-hattanville (8 games) posted a better improvement from 2015-16 to 2016-17.

LAST TIME THEY MET - GUSTIES vs. TOMMIES... After claiming the MIAC regular season title and No. 1 seed in the confer-ence playoffs, the Gusties were upset 3-2 in the 2017 MIAC semifinals to St. Thomas on Feb. 25.

After Gustavus established a two-goal lead early into the second frame, St. Thomas three unanswered goals including the game-winner 12:24 into the overtime period to advance to the MIAC Playoff Championship.

The home team took control early into the first period. At the 4:13 minute mark, Kaitlyn Klein (Jr., Plymouth, Minn.) found Emily Gustafson (Sr., Esko, Minn.) open in the slot who buried her ninth goal of the season to give Gustavus a 1-0 lead. The Gusties maintained the lead heading into the first intermission, outshooting the Tommies 8-5.

Early into the second frame, Gustavus added on to its lead with a goal from Erica Power (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.). After receiving a pass from Amelia Vosen (Fy., Nowthen, Minn.), Power snuck a shot past the glove of the Tommie goaltender Mackenzie Torpy to give the Black and Gold a 2-0 lead.

St. Thomas stole away the momentum not long after the second Gustavus goal, adding two more in the second frame. Becca Zarembinski scored just two minutes after Power’s goal and Anna Williams added another to knot the score at 2-2 with just over three minutes remaining in the period.

Each team tallied 10 shots on net in the second period before the Gusties played a strong third. They outshot the Tommies 10-2 while they couldn’t find a way to put one past St. Thom-as goalie Torpy, forcing a 20-minute overtime regulation pe-riod with the score still knotted a two a piece.

Neither team was penalized in the first 60 minutes, until Hannah Bird of St. Thomas was called for hooking 3:32 into the overtime frame to give Gustavus the first power play opportunity of the game. 1:20 into the man advantage, the Gusties’ were penalized with a roughing call to negate the power play, giving the Tommies their first power play chance. Neither team was successful on the man advantage.

The overtime game-winner came at 12:24 when a Gust-ie turnover in the defensive zone caused an open look in the slot that Rachel Werdin put past Gustavus goaltender Amanda DiNella (So., Oakbrook Terrace, Ill.) to give the Tom-mies the 3-2 win.

Gustavus outshot St. Thomas in the game by a margin of 38-28. DiNella made 25 saves in goal, suffering just her third loss of the season, her first in 12 games played dating back to Dec. 7.
