War Memorial Pool, located just off the campus Drillfi eld in War Memorial Gym, is Virginia Tech’s swimming and diving facility. The complex includes a 25-yard pool with eight lanes and a diving well. The movable bulkhead which separates the pool from the diving well can be adjusted to lengthen the pool to 25 meters.

Complete with underwater windows and sound system, the facility is also equipped with the Colorado Electronic Timing System and scoreboard. Four years ago, a 12-line readout scoreboard was installed for swimming, as well as a three-line scoreboard for diving.

This season, the team will move into state of the art locker rooms with a team lounge adjacent. The program will also enjoy a new team room, located just off the men’s locker room.

The diving well is made up of two one-meter boards, a three-meter board and a fi ve-meter platform.

The pool has served as the site for two Virginia State Championship meets and one Metro Conference Championship.

War Memorial Gym itself houses numerous other facilities including saunas, weight rooms, racquetball courts and six basketball courts. The Hokies also have the use of other equipment such as power-racks for strength swimming and VASA trainers, VASA climbers and bicycles for dry land.

Located in War Memorial Hall, Virginia Tech’s swimming pool and diving area provide an outstanding venue for competition.

Men’s OutlookFourteen letterwinners return from the

2003-04 squad that placed third at the BIG EAST Championships. Despite having only three seniors, who are all incredibly strong, youth could be the biggest strength to the squad.

Not only do the 14 return, but head coach Ned Skinner brought in a top class that could help mold together a great team for years to come.

“Our freshman class was recruited with an eye toward the ACC,” said Skinner. “Our new conference affi liation showed with the quality talent we were able to attract.”

SPRINTERS

Senior co-captain Kevin Furlong has excellent speed and was a part of several record-breaking teams during the 2003-04 season. His experience should help the Hokies get to where they want to go. Co-captain Trevor Jamerson could be an important part of the puzzle for Skinner.

Junior Tom Alberi was also a part of greatness during the 03-04 season, setting personal records and a school record in the 400 freestyle relay.

Sophomore Christian DeLollo could be one to watch during the sprints while Tommy Evans looks to add depth. Junior Casey Moore will be back from illness to lead the 50 free crew and could factor in relays.

Senior Aaron Sherman, also a school record holder in the 400 free relay, will be a contender at the ACC Championships in all freestyle events.

Newcomers Scott Beard, Jake Bova, Pete Cancila and Zac Czaplicki will be looked upon for assistance in sprint freestyle.

DISTANCE FREESTYLE

Gus Calado, an NCAA Championship qualifi er in the 500 freestyle anchors the distance free corps. Mike Della Noce, Tommy Evans and Neil Savage will all return to the distance freestyle. Their experience should help get the team to the conference championships and possibly the NCAAs.

Freshman Austin Fiehler will see time in the pool in the distance events.

INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY

Phil Smith is one of three juniors who will be swimming IM this season. Following Smith are fellow upperclassman Della Noce and sophomore Neil Savage.

Sophomore Stephen Jensen will provide part of the backbone for the team.

Freshmen Czaplicki and Fiehler, along with sophomore Chris Soniak could help the team reach the NCAA Championships.

BACKSTROKE

Alberi’s experience will be called upon immediately as he, DeLollo and Jensen will be forced to shoulder the burden in the backstroke while sophomore Savage should provide depth.

Newcomer Scott Beard will contribute immediately, coming off a strong summer before college.

BUTTERFLY

Calado, an NCAA All-American, returns to vie for conference and NCAA titles. Casey Mooreand Cancila will be seeing additional action, competing in the butterfly events as well as Tommy Evans.

Jamerson and Soniak, along with newcomer Fiehler, could make this team extremely deep in these events.

BREASTSTROKE

Furlong and Smith are the two upperclassmen who will anchor the breaststroke events, with Furlong holding the 100-yard school record.

Andy Pelenberg and Russell could earn pool time in the events and be huge factors in its success.

DIVERS

Senior captain Doug Roper looks to lead the Hokie divers this year after an impressive junior season. After qualifying for fi nals in two events in last year’s BIG EAST Conference championships and reaching the Zone Championships, Roper is eying the ACC and looking to help this program make its mark as a new member of the conference.

Newcomer Scott Hudson should prove to be an integral part of this year’s squad and contribute in both dual meets and ACC competition. Returner Luke Mulhern will round out the 2004-2005 squad and the coaches look for him to be a strong competitor and score points throughout the season.

Women’s OutlookWomen’s OutlookHead coach Ned Skinner thinks the combination

of a strong senior class with the emergence of talented freshmen and sophomores could catapult the Hokies into the mix of a conference championship in their first season in ACC competition.

“We are excited as we have ever been about this year’s squad,” said Skinner. “The women have come back in excellent shape and the blend of strong newcomers with high level experience should bode well in the tough Atlantic Coast Conference.”

SPRINTERS

Sophomore Mason Walsh, along with Emily Gushke and senior captain Whitney Johnsen lead a group of extremely talented sprinters that will make noise at not only the ACC level, but also at the NCAA Championships.

Mixing with them will be junior Juliana Daniell and sophomores Erin Tarpey and Laura Campbell, who could see significant time in the pool.

In addition, freshmen Courtney Walsh and Becky Horning could impact the relay teams.

DISTANCE FREESTYLE

Senior captain Jeanette Batten and senior Sarah Gardner move into the head roles on the “Lady Distance” squad.

Sophomore Lauren Dillon, who lettered last year, adds depth to the team as does newcomer Beth Byrum.

FREESTYLE

Sophomores Emily Chen and Erin Courtney, along with freshman Millie Campbell look to contribute in the freestyle events, along with Batten. Sophomore Erin Tarpey will be a huge factor in all relays.

INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY Chen will anchor the IM crew with school record-

setting junior Katy Peterson, who takes over for a departed Jen Brielmaier as the most experienced swimmer. Not to be outdone, Liane Bianco and Laura Campbell strengthen the squad.

Freshmen Jessica Botzum and Mille Campbell look to add depth to a talented team.

BACKSTROKE

Peterson will show her diversity by also competing in the backstroke, where she holds school records in every event. Having three years of experience should help her compete for conference honors as well as assist the younger swimmers.

Erin Courtney and Gardner will see time in the pool in this event, while Mandie Yothers adds significant experience.

BUTTERFLY

Batten, Chen, Tarpey and Yothers headline a team of talented Hokies in the 200 butterfly event. Laura Campbell, Daniell, and senior Erin Veltman are slated to see action in the 100 fly.

Newcomer Horning will challenge the upperclassmen for time in the water and points in dual meets and conference championships.

BREASTSTROKE

Senior Kelly Burke is the lone upperclassmen

in the breaststroke and an important part to the

team. While she will be looked to for guidance and

mentoring, the fresh faces of Bianco, Botzum and Mille

Campbell will have to come along faster than Skinner

wanted in order to gain points during competition.

All have worked hard over the summer and

have become more physical in their event.

DIVERS

Junior Claire Jakabcin leads the returners

this year after a strong sophomore season where

she qualified for finals on one-meter and narrowly

missed finals on three meter at the BIG EAST

Championships. Fellow returning upperclassman

Jen Urbach, who is hungry to prove herself in ACC

competition, will join her.

Junior transfer Laura Lunn looks to make a

statement in the ACC after coming to Virginia Tech

from the impressive diving in the Big 12 Conference.

Lunn will be looked at to make an immediate impact

in the ACC and the staff will enjoy watching her

evolve with the Hokie diving program.

Rounding out the squad will be returner

Shannon Marriner. She will add depth to the diving

team this season. She will be fun to watch as she

continues to improve throughout the season.

Ned Skinner, who led the Hokies to the upper echelon of the BIG EAST, opens his seventh year at the helm of the Virginia Tech men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams with a talented, but young team and a new conference

— the Atlantic Coast Conference. In 2001, his fi rst year in the BIG EAST, he

led the women to a second-place fi nish, while the men placed third. In 2003, the men placed second in the conference and the women fourth. Skinner was named the BIG EAST Men’s Coach of the Year while Kevin Furlong was named the Outstanding Men’s Swimmer. In 2004, both Tech squads fi nished third at the BIG EAST Tournament. Skinner was named Co-Coach of the Year for the men.

In his fi rst two years as head coach of the Hokie swimming and diving squads, Skinner was named the Atlantic 10 Women’s Coach of the Year twice and led the women’s team to two Atlantic 10 Championships, while the men won their fi rst conference title in this conference in 2000.

The W&M men’s team posted a fourth-place showing at the ’98 ECAC Championships and fi nished seventh in 1997. During Skinner’s tenure, both the men’s and women’s squads were named Academic All-America Teams four straight years.

Skinner also coached Kristen Schnittger to four consecutive ECAC titles in the 100 breaststroke at the College of William & Mary.

Before his stint at William & Mary, Skinner was the head coach and aquatics director at Central Connecticut State University for four seasons.

A 1989 graduate of Louisiana State University, Skinner was captain of the 1988 squad that captured the SEC Championship. He graduated from LSU with a bachelor of arts in advertising and a split minor in marketing and economics. His fi fth year he served as an assistant to the associate athletics director. Skinner earned his masters of science at Ohio University in athletic administration while serving

Women (7-3), Men (6-3)

Brielmaier and Lindberg leave their mark while Walsh and Calado lead future Hokies

Another year of success followed the 2003-2004 Hokie swimming and diving teams. Along with a plethora of school and pool records falling, the teams once again finished in the upper echelon of the BIG EAST in their fi nal year of affi liation with the league. The men fashioned a 6-3 record and a third-place showing in the league, while the women compiled a 7-3 ledger for third place as well.

A bevy of highlights surrounded the teams, including four Hokies participating in NCAA competition and the conference’s two highest honors, Most Outstanding Men’s Swimmer and Men’s co-Coach of the Year, awarded to freshman Gus Calado and head coach Ned Skinner, respectively. Calado, along with senior standout Christian Lindberg, represented Tech at the NCAA Championships. Calado advanced to the fi nals of the 200 butterfl y, where he took 12th place overall. Freshman Mason Walsh also represented Tech at the women’s NCAA Championships, while junior diver Doug Roper took part in the NCAA Zone Diving Regionals.

Following a successful dual meet season, both Hokie squads re-wrote the record books at the BIG EAST Championships, combining for 10 school records. The Hokies also combined for nine individual titles and three relay championships. Calado broke an 11-year-old league record in the 500 freestyle, while Walsh qualifi ed for the NCAA, winning the 50 freestyle.

Both teams began the year with wins against Louisville at home on Oct. 12. The men secured a 142-89 win, while the women won 136-88. Seven men’s team members claimed victories. Two Hokie relay teams won their respective races as well. On the women’s side, seniors Jamie Spradlin and Jen Brielmaier were double winners. Four other women won events, while two relay teams notched victories.

Both teams improved to 2-0 with wins at William & Mary on Oct. 19 in a two-session meet. The men downed the Tribe 195-165 as the women raced to a 197-158 victory. Seven Hokie men won events, including Calado and Roper as double winners. Two men’s relay teams claimed wins, while on the women’s side, eight athletes won events with two relay teams claiming wins as well.

The Hokies then hosted a tri-meet with Clemson and Maryland participating. The Hokie men split the results, winning 165-78 against Maryland while dropping a 153.5-89.5 decision to Clemson. The women dropped both of their match-ups. Calado and Lindberg were double winners for the men with Roper winning the three-meter diving event. Spradlin and

sophomore Emily Guschke were winners on the women’s side.

The women’s team improved to 3-2 with a 154-146 victory against Villanova at War Memorial Pool on Oct. 29. Spradlin continued her prolifi c season with three more individual wins, while Brielmaier secured wins in two races. Two other Hokies also won events.

In another preview of things to come, the Hokies faced future ACC foe North Carolina State on Nov. 8. Both teams lost close meets, with the men dropping a 133-108 decision to the Wolfpack and women slipping to 3-3 with a 138-105 setback. Lindberg and Spradlin again led the Hokies with two wins each. Calado added a win for the men, while juniors Sarah Gardner and Katy Peterson picked up wins for the Tech women.

Tech then took part in the prestigious Nike Cup, concluding the event with two fourth place fi nishes. Peterson led the Hokie contingent with two wins in the 200 backstroke, swimming the school’s second-best time to win the super fi nals. Roper took second in the platform diving event, while one Hokie 400 freestyle relay team from both the men’s and women’s teams took second place.

After the winter break, the Hokies returned home to host East Carolina on Jan. 17. Both teams rolled to wins over the Pirates, with the men winning 148-88 and the women trouncing ECU, 151-86. Lindberg racked up two more individual wins, taking the 50 and 100 freestyle events. Seven other Hokie men swam to victory, while nine women claimed wins, including Brielmaier’s two wins. Two men’s and two women’s relay teams also tallied victories.

The Hokies continued their productive seasons with dual meet wins at West Virginia on Jan. 24. The men edged the Mountaineers 136.5-105.5, while the women eased past WVU 154-79. The highlight of the meet was

junior Kevin Furlong and Szabo each breaking 24-year-old WVU Natatorium records. Furlong won the 100 breaststroke, and Szabo raced to victory in the 400 IM. Three other Hokie men and two relay teams won events, as Lindberg was again a double winner. For the women, six athletes won events as Spradlin and Brielmaier paced the team with two wins each. Sophomore diver Jen Urbach picked up points for Tech with a win in the one-meter event.

The Hokies closed the dual meet season against BIG EAST foe Pittsburgh on Jan. 31 at home. Eleven pool records were established as the women rolled past the Panthers 146-96. The men’s meet came down to the 400 freestyle relay with Tech holding a 104-103 advantage. Unfortunately, the Hokies only picked up a second-place fi nish and saw the 17th-ranked Panthers slide by them with a 123.5-119.5 decision. Calado and Lindberg led the men with two wins and three pool records between them, while the women won eight races and set three pool records. Spradlin racked up two more wins to give her 15 individual wins during the dual meet season. On the year, Lindberg and Calado each won 11 individual events, while Walsh won four. Brielmaier was honored with a BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Award.

In addition to Walsh’s four wins, she was also able to qualify for the Olympic Trials in the 50-meter freestyle after placing fi fth at the Ultra-Swim meet in Charlotte, N.C., in June. While in Long Beach, Calif., Walsh surged ahead of the fi eld and into the semifi nals by posting a personal-best of 26.08. The 26.08 time left her tied for 13th place, but pushed her into the next round since the top 16 advanced. Despite not advancing to the fi nals, Walsh again set her second personal best of the trials with a sub-26 second mark of 25.99. She fi nished 12th in the fi eld.

War Memorial Pool, home of the Hokie swim team, was originally built in the early 1920s, but was renovated and moved in March of 1975. Since then, numerous records at the pool have come and gone, but some have lasted longer than others. Tech’s 400 freestyle relay team set the mark on Jan. 16, 1991, and held the mark until it was broken in 2002. Last year, fi ve women’s pool records were broken, all broken by Hokies (two by Katy Peterson, one by Mason Walsh, Jeanette Batten & the 400 Fr-Relay). The Tech men broke fi ve War Memorial Pool records. Christian Lindberg set two while David Szabo, the 400 MR and Gus Calado all set one.

The first ACC championship was held in swimming on February 25, 1954. The conference did not conduct championships in cross country, wrestling or tennis during the fi rst year.

The 12 sports for men include football, cross country, soccer, basketball, swimming, indoor and outdoor track, wrestling, baseball, tennis, golf and lacrosse. Fencing, which was started in 1971, was discontinued in 1981.

Women’s sports were initiated in 1977 with the fi rst championship meet being held in tennis at Wake Forest University. Championships for women are currently conducted in cross country, volleyball, fi eld hockey, soccer, basketball, swimming, indoor and outdoor track, tennis, golf, lacrosse, softball and rowing.

A HistoryThe Atlantic Coast Conference

was founded on May 8, 1953, at the Sedgefi eld Inn near Greensboro, N.C., with seven charter members – Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest – drawing up the conference bylaws.

The withdrawal of seven schools from the Southern Conference came early on the morning of May 8, 1953, during the Southern Conference’s annual spring meeting. On June 14, 1953, the seven members met in Raleigh, N.C., where a set of bylaws was adopted and the name became offi cially the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Suggestions from fans for the name of the new conference appeared in the region’s newspapers prior to the meeting in Raleigh. Some of the names suggested were: Dixie, Mid South, Mid Atlantic, East Coast, Seabord, Colonial, Tobacco, Blue-Gray, Piedmont, Southern Seven and the Shoreline.

Duke’s Eddie Cameron recommended that the name of the conference be the Atlantic

Coast Conference, and the motion was passed unanimously. The meeting concluded with each member institution assessed $200.00 to pay for conference expenses.

On December 4, 1953, conference officials met again at Sedgefield and offi cially admitted the University of Virginia as the league’s eighth member. The fi rst, and only, withdrawal of a school from the ACC came on June 30, 1971, when the University of South Carolina tendered its resignation

The ACC operated with seven members until April 3, 1978, when the Georgia Institute of Technology was admitted. The Atlanta school had withdrawn from the Southeastern Conference in January of 1964.

The ACC expanded to nine members on July 1, 1991, with the addition of Florida State University.

The conference expanded to 11 members on July 1, 2004, with the addition of the University of Miami and Virginia Tech. On October 17, 2003, Boston College accepted an invitation to become the league’s 12th member starting with the 2005-06 academic year.

The Virginia Tech Sports Medicine Department is an ever-changing and developing unit that strives to provide the most current and comprehensive care to all student-athletes. The department, under the leadership of Gunnar Brolinson, D.O., Delmas Bolin, M.D., and Mike Goforth, director of athletic training, is constantly evolving to incorporate new ideas and state-of-the-art resources for the betterment of student-athletes.

A professional staff — including primary care physicians who are Board certified in family medicine and sports medicine, orthopaedic surgeons, certified athletic trainers, physical therapists, chiropractors, massage therapists, sports psychologists, nutritionists and orthotists — is available to manage the health care of athletes.

As part of the evolution, Tech recently completed its second full year in the new 4,300-square-foot Eddie Ferrell Memorial Training Room. This area consolidated the training rooms that existed in the Merryman Center and Cassell Coliseum. The new facility gives the training staff a centralized area to

care for the needs of all Virginia Tech student-athletes. There is state-of-the-art equipment and a unique style of architecture, developed by Glenn Reynolds, AIA and Larry Perry as the consulting engineer.

The new room, which nearly doubles the size of the former Merryman Center facility, also allows the staff to utilize that room for physical therapy, chiropractic care and massage therapy. With its completion, Virginia Tech now has more than 10,000 square feet dedicated to sports medicine, placing Tech in the top five percent nationally. In addition, the $10 million Merryman Center, a state-of-the-art facility which includes 2,400 square feet of medical space, will supplement the new training room.

This treatment room has numerous treatment modalities, including portable X-ray, electric stimulation, ultrasound, hot and cold packs and a lumbar/cervical traction unit. It also has offices for the staff, dozens of training tables, two cold tubs, whirlpools, an underwater treadmill, a Biodex System 3 and various other pieces of rehabilitation equipment.

After an injury, an athlete will go through rehabilitation and physical therapy. Athletes are then moved to weight training, as they become able. The strength and conditioning staff uses specific programs for each injury in an effort to get the athlete back quickly.

The range of benefits athletes have access to include custom orthotics, custom mouth guards, specialized DonJoy prophylactic bracing and many other options to help prevent or protect them from injuries. The sports medicine staff also takes great pride in treating the athlete year-round.

Special attention is paid to off-season activity. During this time, the staff will analyze past injury data from each participant and construct a preventative program that is followed over a nine-week period between the end of the season and the beginning of spring practice. This same procedure is followed during the summer.

If physical therapy is needed, student-athletes can be seen by therapist Mark Piechoski in the Ferrell Training Room. Piechoski, who is a Certified Athletic Trainer,

Physical Therapist, and Strength and Conditioning Specialist plays a large role in the overall program developed to return the injured athlete back to 100 percent. In addition, staff sport psychologist Gary Bennett is available to all student-athletes for personal and performance issues.

Virginia Tech also has the services of Dr. Greg Tilley, team chiropractor. Dr. Tilley provides Tech athletes with specialized treatment for spine related conditions and also plays a huge role in performance enhancement through various chiropractic techniques.

Tech also maintains a special relationship with Montgomery Regional Hospital. Montgomery Regional Hospital is the choice for state-of-the-art equipment to perform surgeries, diagnostic imaging and processing of laboratory requests.

The success of Virginia Tech’s swimming and diving program rests largely on the academic progress of each student-athlete. The academic performance of Tech student-athletes has improved each year due in part to the Student Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS).

The Virginia Tech graduation rate for student-athletes has risen signifi cantly in recent years and reached 70 percent in 2003 as compared to the national average of 62 percent. The 70 percent student-athlete graduation rate marks the second straight year and fi ve in the last 10 years that Tech has reached that level.

In addition to posting impressive graduation fi gures, Virginia Tech’s student-athletes continue to excel in the classroom. For the sixth consecutive record setting year, 482 3.0 GPA’s were earned by student-athletes, student trainers, student managers, cheerleaders

and High Techs during the 2003 calendar year. These student-athletes and students from support areas were recognized at the Athletic Director’s Honors Breakfast last spring.

Student-athletes are the most visible student component of a university. They entertain thousands of fans, students and alumni. Their athletic ability and achievement is the primary focus for national media attention. Athletic events bring back not only faithful alumni, but are a welcome mat for potential new students.

Student-athletes devote many hours to practice, conditioning and training that are not required of all students. Due to their time commitment and their high visibility, it is an obligation and in the best interest of the university to supply these students with services which will allow them to maximize their academic potential.

The Virginia Tech Student Athlete Academic Support Services offi ce is committed to providing fundamental and supplemental programming, consistent with university and NCAA policy, aimed at enhancing each student athlete’s educational experience.

The expectations of the Virginia Tech community are that each student-athlete achieves their maximum academic and athletic potential. With the proper assistance, facilities and encouragement, these potentials can become a reality.

Academic facilities for student-athletes include the Monogram Room, a large room used as a study hall area, adjacent to the SAASS offi ce in Cassell Coliseum.

The HEAT (Hokies Engaging in Advanced Technology) Lab and its satellite sites house over 40 computers on the second fl oor and third floors of Cassell Coliseum. Laptop computers are also available

for Tech athletes to use when travelling to away contests. The athletic department also provides areas for private, quiet study for the athletes’ convenience.

Together, these spaces provide the student-athlete with a variety of study environments conducive to their success. Athletes can use these facilities between classes, after practice or in the evenings, with flexible hours tailored to make the most of a student-athlete’s limited time.

Chris Helms, in his sixth year at Tech, is the director and is responsible for the development and leadership of the Student Ath lete Academic Support Services offi ce.

Assisting him are associate directors Lois Berg and Colin Howelett and Katie Ammons. Berg oversees the academic progress of the swimming & diving teams.

Strength & ConditioningOne of the most important

aspects of a succesful college swimming & diving program is its strength and conditioning program.

Thanks to the direction of Assistant Athletics Director for Athletic Performance Mike Gentry, the Virginia Tech strength and conditioning program is among the best in the nation.

One of the main support centers of the Tech swimming & diving team is the strength and conditioning program. The results of hard work by the staff and the student-athletes are beginning to show as the Hokies prepare for their fi rst season in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Tech swimmers and divers train in the Jim “Bulldog” Haren Weight Room. Located in Jamerson Athletic Center, the 5,000-square foot weight room was officially dedicated in September 1985 to Haren, a former Hokie football player and long-time supporter of the Virginia Tech Athletic Department. Men’s soccer also

uses the state-of-the-art new weight room on the lower level of the Merryman Center. With the two facilities, the Hokies have more than 22,000-square feet of strength and conditioning training space.

Sports NutritionEating healthy and choosing

nutritious diets are important aspecst of a Virginia Tech student-athlete’s life, and that’s why in July 2002, the athletics department implemented the sports nutrition program. Amy Freel serves as the director.

Freel works individually with student-athletes to provide them with information they need on their diet. She also provides individual players with diet counseling on issues such as gaining lean muscle mass, losing body fat, and eating choices to improve performance.

She also designs preseason menus, snacks and training table menus for the soccer team.

“It is extremely beneficial for our student-athletes to have nutrition education and counseling

available to them in order for them to remain successful in their sports and outside of athletics,” Freel said. “The individualized nutrition education allows me and the athletes to get very specifi c on their nutritional, personal and sport-specifi c goals.”

The sports nutritionist works with the “Training Edge,” a dining option for health-conscious students and athletes, to design menus for training tables and daily menu selections.

Also in July 2002, the Virginia Tech Athletics Department purchased the BOD POD body composition system. Tech is one of a handful of college athletic departments using this type of technology. The BOD POD is found in many professional training facilities, such as the NFL and Major League Baseball. It accurately measures body composition (percent of body fat, lean muscle mass and fat mass) through air displacement within fi ve minutes.

Research has shown that an increase in lean muscle mass will

Athletic PerformanceAthletic Performanceincrease athletic performance. The Sports Nutrition Program has helped countless Tech athletes maximize their athletic performance.

Sport PsychologyVirginia Tech also offers another

important service to all its student-athetes – sport psychology. Dr. Gary Bennett coordinates the sport psychology department, which offers psychological and performance enhancement services for student-athletes. Bennett also works closely with the Cook Counseling Center.

Bennett meets with student-athletes on an individual basis for personal counseling and to discuss the mental aspects of the game. He also works on team building, communication and performance enhancement.

T h e s p o r t p s y c h o l o g y department also offer an injury group to afford injured athletes the opportunity to meet with other injured athletes and talk about their recovery process.

From peaceful outings at the nearbyCascades, to thrilling Tech football gamesat Lane Stadium, to downtown festivals, the Blacksburg area has a lot to offer.

One of America’s best college towns, Blacksburg is a perfect setting for a great university like Virginia Tech. Located in Southwest Virginia on a plateau between the Blue Ridge and Alleghany Mountains, Blacksburg combines the laid-back lifestyle of a small town with the amenities one would expect to fi nd around a major center of higher education. Together, the town and university have worked hard to create a progressive community that ranks among the nation’s elite living environments. Virginia Tech and the Town of Blacksburg gained national and international attention by creating the world’s fi rst “electronic village.” Businesses and industries have been drawn by the potential of the quaint town. Established in 1798 by John and William Black, the town is surrounded by scenic mountain views that accentuate the area. Since its founding, Blacksburg has grown to become the largest town in Virginia. The nearly 36,000 residents (including students) enjoy a close proximity to a variety of recreation areas such as the Blue Ridge Parkway, Appalachian Trail, Claytor Lake and the New River. The region features a moderate climate and four distinct seasons. Blacksburg was recently named by Outside magazine as one of the top 10 places to live in America. The town’s location (adjacent to major in ter state highways) provides convenient access to most points in the southern and eastern parts of the country. More information on Blacksburg can be found on the web site of the Blacksburg Elec tron ic Village, www.bev.net or at www.blacksburg.va.us.
