    What is Computer ?

A computer is a general purpose device that canbe programmed to carry out a set of arithmetic or logicaloperations. Since a sequence of operations can be readilychanged, the computer can solve more than one kind of

problem. Conventionally, a computer consists of at least one

processing element, typically a central processingunit (CPU) and some form of memory. The processingelement carries out arithmetic and logic operations, and asequencing and control unit that can change the order of

operations based on stored information. Peripheral devicesallow information to be retrieved from an external source, and the result of operations saved and retrieved.

Modern computers based on integratedcircuitsare millions to billions of times morecapable than the early machines, and occupy afraction of the space. Simple computers aresmall enough to fit into mobile devices, and mobile computerscan be powered bysmall batteries. Personal computers in theirvarious forms are iconsof the Information

Ageand are what most people think of ascomputers. However, theembeddedcomputersfound in many devices fromMP3playersto fighter aircraftand from toysto industrial robotsare the most numerous.

    Benefits - Storage

Large amounts of data can be held oncompact storage devices. This allowsorganisations to cut down on office space, rent and/or building purchase costs. Alsoallows for cleaner, tidier workingenvironment.

    Benefits - Efficiency

Increased processing speeds allow tasks to becompleted more quickly by fewer people.Sending a letter using mail merge used to bea boring, time consuming task. Computers, therefore, allow the organisations to respondmore quickly to clients needs.

    Benefits - Quality of

    Information

Data held in digital form can be interrogated quickly

and flexibly, searching for a client in a particular

location is completed instantaneously. This leads to

better quality information which improves thestandard of decision making by the organisation.
