The Director’s Corner by Sheri Cook

Greetings! For the past two years, I have been fortunate to be involved with the High School Academic Bowl competition at Gallaudet University. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting many coaches, players, parents, and volunteers from the Midwest region and other regions as well. I witnessed teams from residential, day and mainstreamed schools come together and compete with great interest and enthusiasm. I was deeply impressed with the players’ respect for their opponents and their gracious behavior when winning or losing a match. If you are a teacher or a parent of a high school deaf or hard of hearing child, I encourage you to earnestly think about starting an Academic Bowl Team. If your school does not have enough students to establish its own Academic Bowl team, you may gather students from two or more schools within a 25-mile radius of each other to create a team. Your school may petition in writing for special consideration to include a larger radius. Other possibilities are for a mainstreamed or home-schooled student to join the team of a local school or program for the deaf. There are many advantages your students will reap when joining an Academic Bowl team. They will learn to work together and expand their capacity for responsibility. They will benefit from studying broad range of academic subjects and increase their study and memorization skills. Students will have a tremendous opportunity to meet new people and make life-long friends. I urge you to contact me at [email protected] if you need assistance with launching a new team. If you already have a team and need your team players to practice competing with other teams before the next Gallaudet meet (March 8-12, 2013), please contact me as well. Please check out Gallaudet’s Academic Bowl website at http://www.gallaudet.edu/academic_bowl.html for more information. I certainly look forward to going to Gallaudet next spring for the 2013 Academic Bowl competition. I will be rooting for all the Midwest teams and I hope to see you there! Have a wonderful new school year! Sincerely,

Sheri Cook
