  • A few words from our Principal...

    Dear Parents and Carers,

Trivia Night Wow– what a fabulous night and as promised filled with loads of laughter. Brains were stretched to capacity around the theme of “colour”. The top two teams were only separated by 1 point!!! A big thank you to Mr and Mrs Chapman & Miss Stanford who spent copious hours researching questions and conjuring up fun games throughout the night. Thank you also Mrs McCulloch for theorganisation and prizes.

School Photos It’s that time of year when school photos are fast approaching. The scheduled date is during week 8, Monday 17th June– Friday 20th June. I have put a schedule of class dates and times in the newsletter. If you have not yet returned your child’s photo envelop– please return ASAP. Spare photo envelopes can be picked up from the front office. It is important that students arrive at school on the day of their photo in full winter school uniform, including ties for both boys and girls.

Please contact the school if you require assistance with school uniform.

Eisteddfod Firstly, I must apologise for incorrect kindergarten Eisteddfod times being printed in last week’s newsletter. Individual class notes were sent home with the correct time, however the newsletter had not been amended and therefore some parents have missed seeing their little cherubs perform on stage.

I do apologise. Our students will have another opportunity to perform their items at our school Eisteddfod concert. We will be showcasing class items, choir and band.

    Date: Wednesday 12th June

    Time: 11:15am

    Venue: School Hall

Mark the date in your calendar! I have been fortunate to watch many of our performances in the Town Hall and must comment on how well our students performed and their behaviour. Performing in front of a large audience is never easy and requires courage, confidence and self belief. I was thoroughly impressed with how our students showed all three characteristics while on stage in front of various schools and the local community. Secondly, I was impressed with how our students behaved not only while on stage but in the audience while they were watching other schools perform. This shows respect ~ well done students. I know I might be a little biased, but we were the best school there!! I would also like to reiterate what the adjudicators stated over and over again, acknowledgment of the time and effort spent by teachers to support our students to perform, making props, costumes and rehearsing and instilling the self belief in students. Thank you.

SRC ~ Year 6 Hang Out The second pool table was delivered late yesterday for the planned transformation of our breezeway by our SRC. The SRC have been busy planning this transformation and are keen to get under way. Watch this space.

    Horse Sports Day

Gunnedah South's annual horse sports day is fast approaching.

Date: Friday 28th JuneTime: all day

Venue: Gunnedah Show Ground Mrs Worley will be looking for volunteers to help run the day as will Mrs Tydd in the canteen. If you can spare some time please contact the school.

    Kindest regards, Emma Jeffery. Principal

  • During the week, 4W and 4 S participated in the One Act Play section of the Gunnedah Eisteddfod. After tirelessly rehearsing their lines and their cues, it all came down to a single performance at the Town Hall. In front of an appreciative crowd, 4 W’s performance of “Nosedive

Airlines” was given 3rd place. The standout performance from the cast was Matilda Harford as Gerty Fearful A.K.A. Sgt. Gertrude Fear.

“Hamish and Griselda”, the play performed by 4 S was, in the adjudicator’s mind ‘well prepared and

convincing’. It was awarded 2nd place with Lachlan Moore as ‘Hamish’ and Tamika Burns as ‘Griselda’, standouts. They were both totally involved in their character, body, face and voice. Tamika received

the award, Most Outstanding Actress in the section.

Congratulations to all students from 4 W and 4 S.

    Eisteddfod Stage 3 Choral speech

On Monday 27th May, four classes from years 5 & 6 competed in the Stage Three Choral Speech section of the Gunnedah Eisteddfod, with spectacular

results. Class 5Z won the section with the set poem “The Storm” and their own choice,

“Sister Flo & the Vegies”. The adjudicator made special comment of their teamwork during the performance.

In a close competition it was difficult to split the classes due to the high standard. Class 5/6H and the combined classes 5S & 5F were awarded equal second for their renditions of the set poem and their own choice “Friends” &

    “Excuses” respectively.

Well done to all the children involved.

  • WhoopingCough(Pertussis)Whooping cough affects people of all ages. It can be especially serious for babies. Vaccination reduces the risk of infection.

What is whooping cough? Whooping cough can be a life threatening infection in babies. Whooping cough in babies can lead to apnoea (pauses in normal breathing), pneumonia, feeding problems and weight loss, seizures, brain damage and, in some cases, death. Older children and adults can get whooping cough too and pass it on to babies.

What are the symptoms? Whooping cough usually begins like a cold with a blocked or runny nose, tiredness, mild fever and a cough. The cough gets worse and severe bouts of uncontrollable coughing can develop. Coughing bouts can be followed by vomiting, choking or taking a big gasping breath

which causes a "whooping" sound. The cough can last for many weeks and can be worse at night.

Some newborns may not cough at all but they can stop breathing and turn blue. Some babies have difficulties feeding and can choke or gag. Older children and adults may just have a cough that lasts for many weeks. They may not have the whoop. How is it spread?

Whooping cough is spread when an infectious person coughs bacteria into the air which can be inhaled by people nearby. If they are not treated early, people with whooping cough are infectious in the first three weeks of their illness.

Whooping cough spreads easily through families, childcare centres and at school. Who is at risk?

Anyone can get whooping cough. People living in the same household as someone with whooping cough are especially at risk. Immunisation reduces the risk of infection but immunity fades over time. You can still get whooping cough even if you've been immunised. How is it prevented? Whooping cough vaccines provide good protection from infection but immunity fades which means that boosters are needed.

    Immunisation for babies

Babies need to be immunised at 2 months, 4 months and 6 months. The first dose can be given as early as 6 weeks of age. Getting your baby vaccinated on time gives them some protection when they are most at risk of severe illness. If your baby's vaccines are overdue, see your GP now to catch up. Immunisation for older children

A whooping cough booster is needed at 4 years of age. Check if your child has been vaccinated. Look at their Blue Book, speak to your GP or ring the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register on 1800 653 809. A second whooping cough booster is given in high school through the NSW School Immunisation Program. Immunisation for adults A booster for adults is recommended for:

Both parents when they are planning a pregnancy, or just after the baby is born

Other adult household members, grandparents and carers of infants under 12 months of age. Adults working with young children, especially health care and child care workers. New mothers in NSW are eligible for free whooping cough vaccine in the maternity unit after the birth of their children or, if this is not possible, free vaccine is

available from their GP within 1-2 weeks after the birth. If you are a close contact of someone with whooping cough:

If you have been exposed to someone with whooping cough early in their illness while they are infectious, watch out for symptoms and see your doctor if you get a new cough.

Some babies and some pregnant women need antibiotics to prevent whooping cough infection if they have had significant contact with an infectious person. How is whooping cough diagnosed? Your doctor may ask about your symptoms and whether there you've had any contact with whooping cough. If your doctor thinks you have whooping cough, a swab from the back of the nose or throat can confirm the diagnosis

    How is it treated?

Some babies may need treatment in hospital or in intensive care. Antibiotics are used to treat whooping cough in the early stages and can help prevent spreading whooping cough to others. People who are not treated early with

the right antibiotics can spread the infection in the first 3 weeks of their illness. After 5 days of antibiotics, you are normally no longer infectious.

The cough often continues for many weeks, despite antibiotics. What is the public health response? Doctors and laboratories must confidentially notify cases of pertussis to the local Public Health Unit. Public Health Unit staff can advise on the best way to stop further spread.

Infectious children are restricted from going to pre-school and school. Unimmunised contacts may be excluded from child care unless they take the special antibiotics.
