Dear parents and carers,

Although we are heading toward the end of the term, there is still a great deal happening at South and preparations for all that term 4 brings are already underway.

Learning Management Business Reform (LMBR)

Early next term we will be changing over all of our business systems (finance, human resources, student management and learning management) to a new platform. The whole of the Department of Education will be changing over to the new system this year.

This will mean that over a three week period early in term 4, we need to manage the change over to the new systems.

Parents and Caregivers for the most part, won't notice the change as the changes are all in the background, however we may be restricted in our ability to do business during the changeover – particularly in the collection and processing of payments.

We are asking parents and caregivers to be aware of these changes and understand that there will be disruption to our ability to process payments during the first three weeks of term.

Whole School Assembly

For the rest of the year, we are holding whole

school assemblies on Friday mornings in weeks

3, 6, and 9. This will allow extra time for

students to give reports or performances and

for the awards to be presented without classes

having to rush off to scripture, cooking or

gardening. They will be held at 9:15am, however

next week will be at 11:15am due to the Book

week Parade.

From the Relieving Principal…. Book Week Parade

Our annual book week parade will be held next

Friday 15th September at 9:15 on the school

oval! Everyone is invited to come along. The

parade will be followed by open classrooms;

where you can join your child in their classroom

and look at the learning that has been taking

place. Parents and visitors are welcome to pack

a picnic for morning tea and stay at school with

their child. An assembly will follow in the hall at

11:15am.

Thank you Mrs Louis

A special presentation was made on Monday to Mrs Robyn Louis, who has been giving up her time for many years to coach the school’s tennis team.

Mrs Louis coached the side in 1992 when they were crowned the state champions and 25 years later guided our 2017 team to another state championship crown.

Her expertise, experience, advice and guidance has been instrumental in allowing our team to reach their full potential and the members of the team wanted to acknowledge the effort and time she has given them.

Members of the team ‘facetimed’ Mrs Louis with the results as soon as they

came off the courts at

Homebush.

Stage 3 Sculpture

We have always known that Mr Thurbon has a

creative side and over the past 2 weeks we have

seen it in bucket loads.

Stage 3 have begun sculpture projects in their

Creative Arts rotation with Mr Thurbon and Mrs

Piggot and are using concrete blocks to carve

their creations.

We can’t wait to see the finished products.

Change of Uniform

A timely reminder that students are to wear

their winter uniforms until the end of the term.

The change over period from winter to summer

uniforms will be in weeks 1 and 2 of term 4.

During weeks 1 and 2 of next term, students can

wear either winter or summer uniform.

It is expected that all students will be wearing

their summer uniform by week 3 of term 4.

School Contributions

Voluntary school contributions from families go

toward providing some of the necessary

equipment and resources for students in their

classrooms. Voluntary contributions are $40 for

the first child in the family and $20 per child

after that.

All families who have paid their fees by this

coming Monday 11th September, will go into a

draw to win a television to be drawn at the

assembly on Friday 15th September.

Welcome back

It was with great excitement and happiness that

last week we welcomed back two former staff

members. Miss Aylish Flannery and Miss Kristie

Hudson. Miss Hudson has returned after

travelling in Europe and teaching in the England.

Miss Flannery also returns after spending time

in Africa, Europe and Canada.

Earn and Learn

We are once again receiving lots of Earn and Learn

stickers both here at school and in the box down

town. Thank you to all those who are collecting

stickers. We are always very fortunate and end up

with great school supplies as a result.

Communication

South school continues in its endeavour to build

positive partnerships between home and school.

A big part of this is keeping lines of

communication open. If you have any concerns

or questions regarding your child, I remind you

to please contact the school and speak with your

child’s teacher.

The S Factor Grand Final was held last Friday evening and certainly displayed the amount of talented students we have at South. Performances ranged from singing and instrumental to comedy skits and dancing. All students should be proud of their performances with a special mention to the K-2 performers who displayed confidence and poise in front of an audience; some for the first time.

Thank you to our judges Miss Christie Burgess and Mrs Trish Study who had a very difficult job.

Life Education Visit

During weeks three to six students had the opportunity to meet with

Tim and Healthy Harold at the Life Education Van to improve their

skills in developing relationships, problem solving and decision making.

Students enjoyed learning about issues such as food and nutrition,

healthy living, personal safety, safety on line and safety with legal and

illegal drugs.

Thank you to all students and families who supported the van through

attendance and merchandise sales.

A big thank you also, to our wonderful P & C for sponsoring the

visit.

Excerp from Rosie Snape’s recount of the Excursion to Carroll…

On Thursday the 31st of August, 38 students from South School

travelled to Carroll to compete in the SpeakFest competition.

When we got off the bus we were separated into two different

classrooms and in these rooms we started our speeches. We

competed against several other schools such as Mullaley, Spring

Ridge, Werris creek and others. Our school did quite well. They

had a BBQ lunch and sold cakes and drinks for morning tea.

Forty children from Gunnedah South Public School

attended SpeakFest at Carroll Public School, on

Thursday last week. It was pleasing to see children

from Year 1 to Year 6 participating.

Congratulations to all of the children for having

the courage to stand up in front of an audience to

present a prepared speech. Some of the children

even had a try at Impromptu Speaking.

Miss Reynolds and I were very proud of the

behaviour and effort of all of the children.

Mr Mark Young, School Education Director and

Mr Kevin Anderson, Member for Tamworth also

attended the day.

Mr Anderson helped Mr Humphries judge the

Stage Three prepared and impromptu speaking.

Mr James Brown and Mrs Barbara Ebsworth – AEO

at Bourke Public School judged Stage One. Mrs

Schubert- GHS English teacher and Mrs Larni

Christie from the Gunnedah Conservatorium

judged Stage 2. All of the judges were impressed

with the standard of the children’s public

speaking.

We all had a lovely day.

Some of our Indigenous students at Gunnedah South had a wonderful

opportunity to participate in the Short Black Opera Program

coordinated by the Gunnedah Conservatorium.

Eleven students in years 4 to 6 participated in the program and

performed at the Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards. Our

students joined other schools to form a choir with mentoring from

famous Aboriginal soprano, actor, composer and playwright Deborah

Cheetham.

Throughout the week students learnt several songs that emphasised cel-ebrating Aboriginal culture with links to Dorothea Mackellar poems.

They also had the opportunity to play some instruments.

Thank you to all teachers involved in taking students to participate in

the program.

On the Monday 31 July, The Gunnedah South Girls’ PSSA Touch Football team travelled to

Coonamble to verse Coonamble Public School in our first match for the PSSA Touch Football

Knockout- Round 3 match.

It was a windy and wet day and Coonamble Public was a great team which made it a tough and

interesting game. At half time the score was 2-3. Coonamble was in the lead.

Prior to the match, the team met a dog. We named her Ginger and she supported us throughout the

game. At half time she greeted as with a smile and gave us extra support and good luck!

In the second half it started to rain heavier! But we were determined to give it all we had! We

worked well as a team and communicated with each other and in the end the score was 4-3.

Gunnedah in the lead. We WON!

That meant that we moved onto the next round, Round 4.

On Monday 21 August, we played the Round 4 match. Our opponents were Werris Creek Public

School. This time we had a home game, which meant that Werris Creek travelled over to Gunnedah

to compete.

Again Werris Creek Public were a really tough team. We played well together and communicated

with each other throughout the game. At half time the score was 3-1. Werris Creek in the lead.

In the end, Werris Creek won 5-2.

All the girls gave it their best and played really well. Sadly, we were knocked out so that was our last

game in the PSSA Knockout Competition.

Zoe Morgan

PSSA Girls’ Touch Football Knockout Team 2017- Zoe Morgan, Lucy Robertson, Josie Gallagher,

Brittney Smith, Daisy White, Nicola Bemet, Zoe Eather, Imogen Cameron, Callie Fordham and

Stella Robertson. Congratulations to all the team members for their hard work and dedication to

Touch football. They should be proud of how well they worked together as a team. Well done!
