His style marks a sensitivity that is best reflected through his writing and treatment of films. The brilliance of Gulzar is that he uses imagery from day to day life and makes mundane things sound romantic & mysterious. He connects with the people and their situation. He is a lifelong inspiration for many people. Recently he was awarded with Dada Saheb Phalke award — Indian cinema’s highest honour — by President Pranab Mukherjee., There was a very noticeable line in his speech , "There are 2 places in India where religion does not matter: the armed forces and the film industry." Nobody, least of all Gulzar himself, would have realised this fact that religion does'nt matter at these two places. On a lighter note, he elaborated upon this point by saying that in today’s times of cellphones and SMSes, him penning a “daakiya daak laya” would make no sense. It shows that he observes the change in the taste of youth and new generation. One thing is sure that , Urdu poetry will remain indebted to him for his outstanding contribution. Gulzar : The man who knows the power of words.

The man of magical words Gulzar is a poet above all things .

The art and achievement of Gulzar’ gives a detailed account of Gulzar’s life from his childhood to his triumphant rise in Bollywood with pictures of the broken down haveli in which he was born, Meena Kumari who was his lady friend for some years, his wife Rakhee and his daughter Meghna.

Gulzar’s original name was Sampooran Singh Kalra. The house where Gulzar was born in Main Bazaar, Dina (district Jhelum in Pakistan). He burst into tears after watching it during his visit here.

Sampooran spent his childhood with his step-brothers and sisters from his father’s other two wives. The family were initially ‘doodhwalas’, selling milk door to door. Then they took to buying and selling cloth. They moved to Delhi.

Sampooran went to Bombay to stay with his step-brother. For a while, he worked in a garage patronised by film director Bimal Roy — then engaged in making ‘Bandani’. He was having trouble with his music composer. He asked Sampooran Singh to compose lyrics. His first foray began with ‘Mora Gora Ang Lai’. It became an instant hit. He realised he could not succeed as a poet unless be changed his name. So Sampooran Singh became Gulzar.

He says , if the poet has the sensibility and the sensitivity. Feel the aspects around you and a poem will emerge from within. There was an incident sometime in May 2010, when writer Chetan Bhagat was hosting at an event where Gulzar was the guest. Bhagat had mentioned that he liked the song 'Kajra Re' from Bunty aur Babli.

Gulzar didn't like the tone of the author and asked the author for the meaning of two lines from the song. When a bewildered Bhagat didn't answer, Gulzar told him to speak only about things he knew about.
