Gulfstream Park Digest Quick Picks – March 14th

$0.50 Pick 5 Ticket = $36.00 (Use BOLDED horses in Races 6 - 10)

1st Race Horses Betting Strategy Top Choice Why Katherine, Miss Tapit

Main Threats Love to Score Longshot Starship Elusive

Race Analysis

Love to Score changed tactics and rallied to beat $35,000 non-winners when claimed away from Dale Romans Feb 8. She used similar tactics to be beaten less than three lengths in a March 3 Allowance and Azpura keeps her in for more than her claim price. That last one plots on top, but her price figures to be decent again. Miss Tapit stalked the pace and finished evenly to be 3rd when claimed out of a similar event Feb 3, her firs start as a winner. She's back at the same level after having been held out nearly six weeks and may move up again. Those two will share top billing. Why Katherine flunked her first test as a winner, but her Jan 10 comeback win plots strongly. Of course, she benefited from a very soft pace situation in that win. Casual Elegance is capable of heating things up while Starship Elusive stalked a fast pace when dominating $35,000 non-winners Feb 27. The 110 Final Time Rating that she earned exceeded the 105 RCL of the race and that's the mark of a horse that can handle a class hike. The lightly-raced 5-year-old has a chance to upset.

2nd Race Horses Betting Strategy Top Choice Chongo Verdi Chongo Verdi is the only two-time

winner. He’s a good example of why you claim 2-yos at your own risk

Main Threats Billos Boy, Make Out Man, Nightowl Earlybird Longshot

Race Analysis

Mike Maker sends out the only multiple winner as Chongo Verdi scored twice as a 2-year-old. Maker took him for one of his top clients, the Ramseys out of that romping $25,000 win and ran him back under the Starter conditions Jan 10. He never got close to the lead in that one after going wire-to-wire when claimed and now has his price slashed two months later. That's hardly a positive pattern, but Maker and the Ramseys have learned how to cut their losses. A $12,000 pot would lessen the pain if he's claimed away. Billos Boy has finished 2nd or 3rd in four consecutive $15,000 claimers and is risked for less than his Feb 3 purchase price after failing to improve for Farro March 6. The eight-day turnaround seems a plus and he should fit better here. Nightowl Earlybird and Make Out Man are shortened up after chasing the pace and getting pulled up routing with better last time. They had both earned 100+ Final Time Ratings in their previous pair and may appreciate the shorter trip.

3rd Race Horses Betting Strategy Top Choice El Oh El, On the Key Bet either top choice at 4/1 and/or Game

Day at 7/1

Main Threats King Khalifa Longshot Game Day

Race Analysis

On the Key debuted for $25,000 for Todd Pletcher Feb 10, got knocked down to 6/5 favoritism and never got untracked. He was claimed that day, has been held out nearly five weeks and has her claiming price doubled. She's bred to get this middle distance, is fitted in blinkers and Rosario takes the call. Look for much better. El Oh El raced evenly debuting with similar around one turn Feb 8. She was bet in half that day, is bred to adore the grass, and shows three works since raced. Those two will share HF 15a status. King Khalifa debuted for $35,000 in a Jan 31 turf route and ran on to finish in the top half of the field. He's a contender on the raise. Finally, Game Day popped and stopped in his Jan 17 debut with Maidens. He's bred to route and may take a lot of catching. He's a modest upset threat.

4th Race Horses Betting Strategy Top Choice Ten Items or Less, Western High, Argosy, Dangerous Hill ‘Less & ‘High are Pletcher second-times

that tired. Both can move way up. The others are rookies – tough heat.

Main Threats Smoldering Beauty, McCarren Park Longshot Dynomatt

Gulfstream Park Today's Racing Digest

Race Analysis

Todd Pletcher runs two chase and tire second-timers in Ten Items Or Less and Western High. 'Less is off turf and dropped in with state-breds and 'High earned a solid 147 Pace Rating Feb 22. Both could look much improved in this spot. Argosy, Dynomatt, and Dangerous Hill have all worked fast from the gate. Dynomatt goes for the red-hot Ramirez barn. He could have run her vs. Maiden-Claimers, but opts for this tougher spot. Beware. First-Timer Report: South Chapel debuts for Hartmann and she races her stock into shape. He is his dam's fourth starter and the last two were winners. Argosy ($50K ylg) worked fast from the gate Feb 24 and followed that up with a good 5F move March 3. He is his dam's fourth starter and the last two were winners. Watch the betting. Slews Best Quality is his dam's four starter and the other three are all six-figure earners. He may be readier than the slow works suggest. Dynomatt ($29K ylg) is not bred to win early and Ramirez normally runs Maiden-Claimers. However, Ramirez is hot and this one's 5F gate work on Feb 23 suggests that he's ready to run. All three of his siblings are sprint winners. Dangerous Hills is a first-timer for Chad Brown and he has popped with a couple of rookie sprint winners this winter. He worked fast from the gate Feb 15 and Rosario may suit him nicely. All three of his siblings are sprint winners.

5th Race Horses Betting Strategy Top Choice Fives and Nines Play presser ‘Nines at 3/1 or big dropper

‘Peace at 12/1. Wet One is the one to hold late. Win bet 4/1

Main Threats Wet One, Will to Shine, Patient Approval Longshot Tale of Peace

Race Analysis

Wet One plots on top off her Jan 9 near miss. She ran 2nd as the favorite March 2 and is the one to hold late. However, her late-running style leaves her vulnerable to traffic trouble or a slow pace. Fives and Nines dueled on the pace and held 2nd with similar Feb 6. She is drawn outside of Patient Approval, another class fit with speed and 3rd behind Wet One March 2, and may get a perfect trip. Let's give her a slight edge. 'Approval can hang on for another share. Will To Shine is back routing after spinning her wheels in an off-the-turf sprint. She can set or stalk the pace and is a fit off her Jan 18 runner-up try. Tale of Peace is the class-dropper of note, as she faced much tougher in her first two starts following a four-month break. Her Sept 9 Allowance win would plot on top and she's got OK turf breeding. This first-time turfer can beat her odds.

6th Race Horses Betting Strategy Top Choice We couldn’t take less than 5/1 in this weak field.

It’s probably a spray & pray race in the PK5

Main Threats Blackstone, Diamonds For Mia, Dixie Devon, Magic Melissa,

Johannesboom Longshot Ellerslie Park

Race Analysis

The Thursday Pick-5 kicks off with an awful group of $10,000 3-year-old fillies. Most were up the track in their last starts vs. $15,000 claimers, and that makes it the type of race where we’d need to see good value on the tote before even thinking of playing. Ellerslie Park has been no factor in two tries with $15,000 claimers. She drew inside posts in those two, but broke from the outside when she beat $25,000 Maiden-Claimers Dec 13. Most of these graduated vs. $12,500 non-winners, so perhaps ‘Park will wake back up in this spot as the Digest HF 20. Blackstone and Magic Melissa plot 1-2 in the paper race off $12,500 Maiden-Claiming wins in their second to last starts. Neither ran well vs. $15,000 claimers last time out, but might rebound. Dixie Devon finished a distant 4th with Optional $25,000 claimers Jan 9 and again when claimed for $15,000 Feb 1. She seems capable of threatening with these, while Diamonds For Mia was 4th with $15,000 claimers Dec 28 and 3rd with $20,000 claimers at Woodbine the race before Nov 28. She could be worth a look at a price. Johannesboom beat $12,500 non-winners when claimed by Ness Jan 11, but stopped badly with $15,000 claimers Feb 15. Her barn does well second off the claim and she owns some of the better Pace Ratings in the field. She might bounce back.

7th Race Horses Betting Strategy Top Choice Don’twait Toolong, Julius Geezer We’ll look for 7/2+ on the top choices.

Main Threats Gentleman Jackson, Midnite Silver

Longshot

Race Analysis

Julius Geezer, Gentleman Jackson and Midnight Silver finished 1-2-3 in a similar affair Feb 22. ‘Geezer pressed the pace and held on for the win at 12/1. He’s shown steady improvement in his last couple of starts and just might be the one to catch turning for home. ‘Jackson has run well in five of his last six. He was sprinting with mid-level Allowance foes at Woodbine, but showed he could handle turf routing in that common race. He could turn the tables. ‘Silver has finished 2nd or 3rd in six of his last seven, so perhaps he’s one to use underneath once again. Another we’ll give a long look at is Don’twait Toolong. He beat $16,000 Starter foes Jan 19 at Tampa and was 4th with that kind Feb 23. Julius Geezer and Don’twait Toolong are both 6/1 on the morning line, so we’ll make them HF 15a’s and see what the odds board has to offer. Century Road is a frontrunner that ships in from Delaware Park off a layoff. He could hurt the chances of ‘Geezer if he scratches in.

8th Race Horses Betting Strategy Top Choice Starship Cutie ‘Cutie might get brave on the front end in a weak

field. Play at 7/2+. We’ll try to beat Cat Can Do if he’s low odds.

Main Threats The Sense Angel, Sacred Desire, Blushing Tiger, Cat Can Do

Longshot

Race Analysis

This cheap claimer is hard to get too excited about. Starship Cutie has gone too fast early and faded light in her last two starts, but beat this kind in wire-to-wire fashion when setting a soft pace Jan 10. She might get brave if able to clear early. Sacred Desire has finished in the money in three of her last four with this kind, but hasn’t been to the winner’s circle in a long time. Maybe she’s a good key in the lower slots. The Sense Angel beat $10,000 non-winners of three here Feb 13 before a poor outing with $10,000 claimers at Tampa March 1. Those were two-turn races, but she beat restricted $8,000 claimers at seven furlongs Jan 31, so perhaps a one-turn mile will fit her well. Cat Can Do beat this kind Jan 18 before settling for minor awards in her last two. She could be a late threat, but we don’t like her descending Final Time Rating pattern. At low odds (ML3), we’d have to try and beat the 10-year-old. Finally, Blushing Tiger ran well with this kind Jan 18 before a so-so effort with $10,000 claimers Feb 8. She might make an impact at a price. In the end, speed does well at this distance and Starship Cutie isn’t facing a lot of other lick. We’ll make her a gambling HF 15a in a race we’d play lightly

9th Race Horses Betting Strategy Top Choice Saint Pete We expect ‘Pete or ‘Wildcat to win. We’ll go with

‘Pete at 2/1+

Main Threats Starship Wildcat, Southpaw Slammer, The Chill Zone, Drunken

Love Longshot

Race Analysis

Saint Pete faltered when sent long vs. mid-level Allowance types Feb 2, but she was 2nd with that kind sprinting Jan 3 and beat this kind Nov 30. She looks like a strong bounce back threat with the return to the short game and will take down HF 15a honors. Starship Wildcat was Dq’d from a win vs. this kind Feb 1 and finished 2nd with similar Feb 21. She’s a big-time threat and would be no surprise. Southpaw Slammer was moved up to 2nd via the Dq with this kind Feb 1. He easily beat straight Maidens in New York in July and merits contender status in his second off a five-month layoff. The Chill Zone, in the money in three straight with this kind, and Drunken Love, a winner over softer Allowance foes at Tampa Feb 3, are a couple others that could impact the exotics.

10th Race Horses Betting Strategy Top Choice Switchboard We’ll play stretcher-outer Switchboard at 3/1+

Main Threats Witch Way North, Starlight Dreamer, (mto) Slammin Rose, (ae)

Starship Sultry Longshot Urquia

Race Analysis

We have to scratch our head and wonder why Slammin Rose was entered for main track only after a good 3rd on the turf with this kind Feb 23. She’s a contender if she starts, but there was little chance of rain Thursday at press time. Starship Sultry is also stuck on the also-eligible list. She was 2nd with $75,000 non-winners Feb 19 before running 5th with this kind Feb 23. She’s a contender if she gets in. The HF 15a will go to Switchboard. The sprinter was 2nd vs. straight Maidens Dec 28 and ran Ok vs. that kind Jan 17. She should enjoy the drop in class if she handles the added distance. Witch Way North showed some solid races with straight Maidens before running 4th with this kind Feb 23. She charts well and might deserve another chance at the level. Starlight Dreamer just missed with $35,000 Maiden-Claimers in her second start Jan 25. She was claimed by Ward that day and could make an impact on the class jump. Starship Amanda has earned steady checks with $35,000 Maiden-Claimers and rates a look in the exotics. She’ll be coupled in the wagering with Starship Sultry if that one starts. Our HF 20 is Urquia. She was 4th with straight Maidens at Tampa Dec 21, and just missed with straight Maidens at Calder three starts back. She was 2nd in a turf sprint when tried with this kind in October, so she might be a good fit with $50,000 Maiden-Claimers.
