Cruizin’ in the passin’ lane

By: Jimbo

Cruisin’ the Coast was the biggest yet and if you like the car scene there was something for everyone.. At times traffic was at a stand still, but that just seems to be part of the experience. Spectators lined Hwy 90 to watch the action.. a lot of locals coaxed drivers to ‘lite-em-up’…. and there were plenty of police around to shut-em-down. Everyone knows the rules; but sometimes ya’ just got to take that chance! It’s no secret that I have a “Large Time” at the Emerald Coast Cruizin’ and I look forward to this event all year long. It’s a relaxing kinda’ show

everyone coming and going at the event site.. The Coast Cruizers Hot Rod Alley tent is our hub of activities.

The beach scene season is over, kids back in school, and the roads are not as crowded. Fact is, during this event most of the beach roads are the cruizn’ show cars. They are coming or going from a Emerald Coast Cruizn’ side trip event, or one of the many hotels, motels, condos, beach houses that cruizers have rented for a week or two. Oh yeah, let me make mention... that since it’s off season the room rates dropped to “affordable”

There is plenty to do during your Emerald Coast Cruizn’ week in Panama City Beach, just the event site alone is a central location, secure parking at the Aaron Bessant Park show grounds, just a parking lot away from Pier Park.

If the last time you were in Panama City Beach, and visions of the ‘Miracle Mile’ pops in your head, let me tell you things have changed... Pier Park, the 900,000 square foot mega family entertainment complex nestled between Front Beach Road and Panama City Beach Parkway (Highway 98), has redefined Panama City Beach. People now know when they come here that a shopping destination like none other awaits them. Pier Park is a beautifully landscaped outdoor shopping mall with festive, colorful Caribbean architecture, containing national chain retailers along with unique locally owned boutiques and specialty stores. The lifestyle complex also contains

My Trip back in times I have never been to Cruisin the Coast, only

heard about this show a lot. It was so nice Sunday morning I decided to grab my baby boy, meet my friend and go on a pleasant journey. I honestly didn't expect to have that much fun!

There were lots of nice cars, great music, food and activities. I was amazed by those old beautiful cars in all kind of shape, colors and decorations. All the cars look like new and running, which was surprising. I felt like I was in a time machine.

Observing the antique cars, I tried to imagine the time when they were new and modern. Who would ever think back then how far automobiles would go.

Thanks to all car owners for bringing them here and letting us enjoy this wonderful show. It was fun and a incredible experience.

I took a bunch of pictures to share with friends and family, they really liked it.

Looking forward to see it again next year. Maria Lyapustina

a 16-screen movie theater, Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville, Dave AND BUSTER’S and many other well-known restaurants and smaller eateries. Pier Park is the perfect destination for families, couples, kids...everyone! (info from their web site but they're right it is a cool place to hang out)

All this and a short walk across the parking lot is thousands of kool cars-n-trucks. What an event site..

True not everything is open, (season over remember) but with the influx of thousands of cruisers and spectators have more and more businesses staying open. (That’s kinda’ cool in away. Some of us have been going to this show for years and, alto we maybe considered tourist too, for a week we get to be the locals.) This year, Anastasia Castro aka ‘Candy Cocktail’ will be on hand to meet MotorSport readers. Candy’s is a Florida girl and contributes articles to MotorSports Magazine.

If you are at the show I hope you will stop by the Hot Rod Alley tent to say “hello”

Hi Jimbo, This is The Funky Rat

Mobile writing to say that I had a very busy week at Cruisin' The Coast am very tired and resting for a few days.

Sunday I was as Hardy Court and Mr. Jonathan Brannan, weekend anchor, at WLOX took many photos of me and talked to my owner Rat Rod Mike Murray. He talked well on T.V. I was the first thing that people saw on his evening news as he opened his program. Miss Alyssa Meisner from FOX News 25 came by and fell in love with me and I may be in love with her. She had me on her T.V. show the next day and Mike did a good gob talking about me. The Sun Herald did a story and took some nice photos that were in the paper.

I was sitting in Ocean Springs and a nice man took lots of photos and talked to Mike. Think he was from Hot Rod magazine or something like that. On the 24th. we will be at our local Broom's Grocery and have all the kids coming over from the Y and from the school. I love to put kids inside my cab and on my rear bed. Last year we got to go to the Sea Bee Base for their halloween and we had fun. Mike thanks you for putting his Studebaker back in your magazine. He sort of wants to sell her but not to bad.

Hope you had a fun time at Cruisin' The Funky Rat Mobile

To all our Cruiser Friends, The Activity Staff and Residents of the Boyington Health Care would like to say thank you for another great Cruizin Car Event!! Everyone had an awesome time. Our Residents are still talking about the cars and the wonderful people they got to meet. We just can't

say enough about how much we appreciate you guys and gals! We are so looking forward til we meet again. Take care and keep Cruizin those fine cars!!!

Sincerely, Dee Dee, Leslie, Misty and The Residents.

friends, families, relatives just a fa-do-do event. There was a girl on the dance floor giving it large she was break-dancing, moon-walking, back flips, the works. My husband turned to the me and said: "See that girl? 25 years ago she wanted to marry me and I turned her down." Yeah… I said to my husband and said: "Looks like she's still celebrating!!! redhead girl@

Jimbo, Dogs spend all day sprawled on the most comfortable piece of furniture in the house. They can hear a package of food opening half a block away, but don't hear you when you're in the same room. They can look dumb and

lovable all at the same time. They growl when they are not happy. When you want to play, they want to play. When you want to be alone, they want to play. They leave their toys everywhere. They do disgusting things

with their mouths and then try to give you a kiss. They go right for your crotch as soon as they

meet you.

CONCLUSION: They're tiny men in little fur coats.

I hope to see ya’ll at Hot Rod Alley this year. ……. Candy

If a picture is worth a 1000 words the following pages are part of my essay on Cruisin’ the Coast week. …. Jimbo

It was as Cruizers dream as the streets of Gulfport filled with some of the vehicles that came for Cruisin’ the Coast’s opening day. I’m standing on a stage looking down five blocks of cars that came to View the Cruise in downtown Gulfport and the side streets were filled too.

I left early and headed over to Pascagoula to the 1st. ’Goula Cruise’.

This famous shipyard town went all out to welcome Crusin the

It was all smiles for Alexis Dewey from Biloxi, MS. Behind the wheel of the MotorSports ‘29. at the downtown Gulfport Cruisin the Coast block party.

The 1st Sharkheads / Gulf Coast MotorSports Sun & Sand Block Party turned out great. Hats off to Scott and the Sharkheads crew putting this cruise-in on.. sure to be on the Friday nite list of things to do for the early birds..

Coast back to their town. Starting with a Bachtoberfest at the Beach Park, then a cruising parade to the Pascagoula Riverfront.

The Magnolia Cruisers and volunteers welcomed everyone with a well orchestrated parking system. A free show registration was offered to all and the Top 50 Awards were up for grabs and I can

tell you there were a lot of vehicles to choose from… my prediction is that this event is going to be a big hit..

On a side note over 40 years ago during this same time period it was a shipyard job that brought me to the Coast. And here I am all these years later attending a great show on some of the same grounds that gave me my start after I got out of the service.. Thanks Pascagoula,

Jimbo

Meanwhile Friday & Saturday “Crab” and whole bunch of friends were at Gulfport Dragway, these folks were laying down rubber, smoking tires till they blew, drifted on asphalt, jumping over cars with a monster truck and even a rat rod halftrack.

17 FOREVER By Terry Mason Barfield Edition 43 Cruising The Coast was another incredible car event. Yes, it’s an event, not a car show and that’s a whole different level. I mean when you have crowds, literally thousands of people set up in lawn chairs on the side of roadways for 30 miles…that is an event, an event where your car is the star. Cruisin The Coast set another attendance record this year for cars attending…7,293 registered cars. Probably that many more came that didn’t register. Your car has to be 25 years old or older to register unless drastically modified and approved, so a lot of the cars you see can’t register. Those cars coming for the last couple of days, say coming in Friday night and cruise Saturday, a lot of them don’t register. I personally think everyone should register their car to support this fantastic event. I mean you support something you want to see grow and prosper… something you want to see hang around. You support the things you like, right? Even with the increase in registered cars, the traffic was much better on Highway 90 and Pass Road for some reason…for that I’m happy. Last year it took me three hours on Saturday to go from Ocean Springs to I-110 in Biloxi. I had to get on I-110 and go Interstate 10 to get to Edgewater Mall. Then trying to turn left off Cowan-Lorraine Rd on to Pass Road it took a few traffic light cycles for there to be enough room to get onto Pass Road because it was so backed up. It then took 30 plus minutes to get to Edgewater Mall. This year I believe you could have driven from Edgewater Mall to Ocean Springs and back in a couple hours. It was bad, but much better if that makes any sense. Again I don’t know why, but I sure liked it. My brother Ken came in from Alabama once again for Cruising The Coast. He left home at midnight on Tuesday night and made it here about 5:30 am Wednesday morning… I know because he woke me up. I then took him to get a spot in the Biloxi Block Party. You have to get down there about 6:30 to get a good spot. We finally got him parked a little after 8 am, went over to Schooner’s and had a good breakfast. I left them to have fun and headed over to the Biloxi Town Green to go to work. The SuperTalk MS Radio Network, The JT Show had a statewide remote broadcast from 10 am until 1 pm and I had to go help out. JT and Bob were here for Cruising The Coast, getting the word out statewide on the event. A lot of folks had just seen a TV commercial or heard a radio commercial, so it was a great opportunity to get some good details out there to the folks in the rest of the state on CTC. I had to work Thursday, so Ken went about getting his card stamps. We met up to go eat Dungeness crab legs at Treasure Bay Casino. I love those crab legs and try not to go very much to keep them special, but when Ken’s in town it’s a must. I have to be prepared to drink a gallon of sweet tea while he eats and eats after we all finish, lol.

Friday I took the day off and we met Jimbo and JR to stuff the door prize bags for the Coast Cruizer’s Mega Cruise-in. Ken and I then went to the Swap Meet at the Coliseum. He found a brake pedal he liked, then it was more cruising and we all ate at a fried chicken place. Saturday morning early, we had to grab the Hot Rod Show trailer and take it and head down to Edgewater Mall to get it in position for the Mega Cruise-in. We have 15 minutes to get it in position at 4:45 and be ready to go at 5 pm. We did some cruising, grabbed some lunch and did a bit more cruising until it was time to get back to the mall and get ready for the cruise-in. I want to thank the band Na Na Sha for making some good announcements for us for the Mega Cruise-in. Auto Zone gave us a ton of door prizes for the Mega Cruise-in…about 40 bags we stuffed with $30 to $50 worth of door prizes.

Page 11: Gulf Coast MotorSports NOV. 2014

11 www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com NOVEMBER 2014

The two biggest prizes Auto Zone provided was an autographed number 88 cap signed by Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and a combo of an Edelbrock 4 barrel carburetor, Edelbrock intake manifold and a set of headers. We also gave away a floor jack, a creeper, a set of ramps, a combo set of a floor jack, a couple of jack stands and a creeper and more. Our Mega 50/50 jackpot was $2,605 and we had a ton of cars and people. What a way to end Cruisin The Coast. I’m always glad to see CTC come around and I’m always glad when It’s over, it comes down to one more day would have kill me and it takes me a week to get over it. The car show season is winding down for 2014, but you can always get the Hot Rod out of the garage and enjoy that 17 FOREVER Hot Rod state of mind! ……. Til next month…

The Bronson Special is believed to be the first vehicle in Indiana produced specifically for drag racing. It was constructed by the Lilly family and the late Bill Bronson who resided in Tipton, Indiana. It was campaigned at several racetracks throughout Indiana. Bill's son Larry told his son Bill that it was built in the winter of 1948-1949. Bronson does have a trophy from 1954, so he can date it to at least that time frame.

I had the good fortune to meet Bill Bronson's grandson, also named Bill Bronson, at an open house at Don Schumacher's race shop. Bill had the restored Bronson Special there at the show. It was such a thrill for me to see this piece of history. It brought back so many memories. This car was built with steel pipe, and is quite crude by today's standards, but it was how cars were built way back then. I was involved in drag racing in the 1960's and although things had started to progress by then, there were still lots of cars being campaigned with small budgets and built by the hands of the owner/driver (and friends). Bill was kind enough to talk to me for a long time. Those are fond memories for me.

Since its creation, this rail has undergone many cosmetic updates. Bill Bronson raced it initially as a rear engine “belly tank” with a flat head engine. Around 1958 he installed a 1953 hemi engine that is still in the car today. Shortly before retiring from drag racing around

1966, the car was changed to a front engine “slingshot” just as it appears today.

I would like to thank Bill Bronson for restoring an important piece of history and for bringing the car to events so that others can re-member their past and the greatness of the time when drag racing was in its infancy.

Photo taken during restoration process. Bill Bronson uses the term loosely because he simply took the body panels off and repainted the car to what it would have looked like in 1966. He did change out the transmission and add a starter and battery so that it would be easier to get on and off the trailer and start at car shows. Other than that, it is the same as it was when the elder Bronson retired from drag racing.

In my world, there are 2 things that are absolutely synonymous with pinups: classic cars and the United States Military. My article this month is devoted to the latter synonym. I am a big supporter of our men and women in uniform. Growing up, the service of my family members increased my admiration and support for the military. Born on base in snowy Alaska, I spend quite a bit of my spare time helping to raise awareness and military support through pinup modeling. Although I have never been in the military, most of my family has been, so it is exceedingly important for me

to give back. I am currently doing so through 2 organizations; the non-profit organization, Heels for Combat Boots, and the Florida Chapter of Pinups for Patriots, a for-profit supporting our military and first responders!

Heels For Combat Boots is a Nonprofit based in Castle Rock, Colorado with support from pinups and fans all over the world! HFCB was founded and created by Kati Sorensen, AKA Riskay Business, on February 28, 2014. HFCB’s goal is to assist Servicemen and women with PTSD/TBI (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury's). The organization assists with helping these individuals adjust back into the world of civilian life by connecting them with the correct outreach and treatment programs and helping with their day to day struggles and issues, from assisting them with paying their bills to obtaining groceries and more. They help to get them involved with the things they enjoy, introduce them to new experiences and connect them with hunting and fishing trips. Also getting involved with Vet events, visiting VA's and sending out care packages.

The organization raises funds numerous ways, most notably by the release of the Heels for Combat Boots book and calendar this month. With its release on Veterans Day, November 11, 2014, 100% of the proceeds will go towards assisting these brave men and women. The HFCB book features pinups from all over the world in military theme along with actual service members themselves writing quotes, stories, experiences, memories and donating their deployment photos. The military has even given their full backing to the Nonprofit as well as their future endeavors. They are hosting a concert, silent auction and book and calendar release party this November in Thorton, CO from which the ticket sales and proceeds will also go towards our men and women. If you are interested in donating to the cause, you can contribute by visiting www.gofundme.com/heelsforcombatboots. There are many other ways to add to the cause: you can donate as a sponsor or advertiser, or by purchasing some of the HFCB merchandise for sale, such as hoodies, t-shirts and sweatshirts available at www.cafepress.com/hfcb.

As a result of my involvement with Heels for Combat Boots, I wanted to contribute military-style pinup photos for the fund raising calendar and book which are coming out this month. The ideal place to do so was at Largo, Florida’s Armed Forces Military Museum, which is a truly exceptional museum in my area devoted to years of military history.

I first visited the museum with my father, a former Navy man who was visiting, and I was absolutely floored at what a hidden gem I had missed for years! I so enjoyed my time there that I coordinated a Saturday of fun, filled with a pinup photo shoot by my good friend Lee Ann of Lee Ann Poling Photography, a private tour with their expert historian Frank and an interview about the museum for our magazine.

The Armed Forces Military Museum is an award-winning history museum that takes visitors on a 50,000 square foot journey through Pearl Harbor, the South Pacific, Germany, Korea, the D- Day landing and Utah Beach, a MASH unit, a POW & MIA table, a French Village and more. The special effects are unreal, with sights, scents and sounds that leave you feeling as though you are experiencing the real thing. With over 130,000 artifacts, the Armed Forces History Museum is a 501 © (3) charitable foundation that through its collections and outreach, is dedicated to preserving military history and educating the public of the many sacrifices made to protect our freedom.

The museum, which opened in August of 2008, typically has 50-60 visitors on a weekday, but sometimes as many as 1000 people per day. The museum’s past visitors include governors, mayors, generals, state representatives and celebrities, such as Gary Sinise and his Lt. Dan Band (which you may recognize from the film Forrest Gump).

The museum began from a personal collection of artifacts owned by John J. Piazza. The story of the museum begins in 1956, when a young Piazza was given some shells by his then-girlfriend’s father. The shells, which turned out to be German mortar shells, are still housed in the museum today. Over the years his collection grew; one could even call it a hobby that got out of control.

14 NOVEMBER 2014 www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com

Page 15: Gulf Coast MotorSports NOV. 2014

15 www.GulfCoastMotorSports.com NOVEMBER 2014

However, it remained a personal collection until a conversation with one of his 23 grandchildren changed everything. While Piazza was talking to his granddaughter, who was going into 9th grade, he learned that she did not know who Hitler was because schools no longer teach past the Civil War in history class. On that day, it became his mission to show people what went on so that they never forget.

This is still the driving force behind the museum; to educate. They frequently have school children that visit via field trips. However, the sad reality is that many schools cannot afford to do field trips. So the museum regularly uses donations to sponsor field trips, believing that no one should be left behind just because they cannot afford it. The museum relies on contributions from the general public. Once they get a certain amount of money, they will take a title 1 school that cannot afford to go on a field trip, and bring them to the museum, paying for their roundtrip transportation, lunch and the price of admission. It costs approximately $800-$1000 for just 1 class to visit the museum.

The museum has 2 main missions: to honor the men and women that have served our country and to educate our young so that they have a better understanding of the sacrifices that were made. The museum preserves our history and keeps memories alive with real veteran voice overs in specific areas. At the D-Day exhibit, guests will here Colonel Leonard Shroeder’s voice describing what happened as he was the first soldier to land on Utah Beach.

Fortunately that 'out of control hobby consisted of almost 60 years of collecting what is now available for the public to visit, enjoy and most importantly, learn from. It is now the largest collection of military memorabilia in the southeast.

My personal favorite part of the museum is toward the beginning. Upon entering there is a room called the Salute to Services, full of formal and service uniforms from US servicemen and women ranging from the Civil War to the present and a room of weapons, after which you enter into a live World War I trench. The diorama displays a typical WWI trench and underground bunker complete with an accurate representation of typical trench surroundings, like sand bags along the walls surrounding you and at the top of the trench are original metal posts for barbed wire recovered from Flanders Battlefield in France. Hearing the sounds and seeing the smoke from fictitious explosions filling the room will cause an eerie chill to go through your body as it seems so real.

Cindy Bosselman, the Assistant Executive Director at the museum, gave me a wonderfully enlightening interview. She

stated that the trench was her favorite part of the museum too because of the first impression it gives visitors. It is a beautiful museum, but once you walk in the trench area, you realize that you are really in for something special and then it just keeps getting better. I certainly concur with that statement as the museum is sure to impress every guest.

The museum has done a remarkable job at painting a uniquely tangible picture of wartime experiences. It takes visitors through World War I & II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, the Iraq War and the Afghanistan War. Even though the museum will take visitors through the wars, do not be deterred from a visit by thinking the museum is pro-war. On the contrary, they are anti-war. They simply want to preserve and show that these men and women, who raised their hand and went to foreign lands, gave us so many freedoms.

Most notably, in preserving and recognizing those that have served, the museum has done something irreplaceable; they have shown veterans how much their sacrifice is appreciated. Of course a grateful civilian like me can say thanks, but it is unlikely that it will be almost therapeutic to a military veteran. However, the Armed Forces Military Museum has been told just that, time and time again, even seeing it firsthand. For example, the staff has seen veterans who have come with family and refused to go in. After much convincing they enter, and are then touched by the appreciation that the museum can convey. Some veterans have even been moved to the point of tears. It can truly touch veterans that may still be having a hard time to see the significance of how what they did continues to mean so much. The staff have heard incredible stories from family members of the veterans who have walked through their doors; stories of how the museum was therapeutic to war veterans who still have difficulties or a family will tell them about how their dad was terminally ill and the visit there gave him another 6 months, and they come back to thank the museum staff for giving them more time with their family member. I think that is a significant testament to what the museum can contribute to guests and veterans alike.

**The museum's official historian, former United States Marine Frank Correa, is at the museum to share his extensive and informative military knowledge with visitors every Saturday. Frank has been a wonderful and unique edition to this distinctive museum since before it opened to the public. Calling him a history buff would be an understatement, as he spends 2-3 hours each day researching and learning about each and every item in the museum. Frank is the expert and one would be amazed to learn that he is strictly a volunteer. Frank says that upon stumbling in one day, he found his calling. Helping to get the museum open

and volunteering there has given him a purpose in life. He not only serves as Master of Ceremony for many events, but he has also done hundreds of speaking engagements, lectures on radio shows, television appearances and voice over work. His informative knowledge and what I think seems to be a pure enjoyment of teaching, will captivate any audience, large or small. I could have listened to him all day. Frank has also managed to film over 30 historical You Tube videos. All of the people involved with the Armed Forces Military Museum say they are humbled to be a part of it.

Another notable person lending their experiences to make the museum come to life for visitors is former POW Bill Allen. At 19 years old, he became a POW in Korea. He was in a prison camp for 3 years, a camp where 1600 people died from malnourishment and the elements. A veteran with PTSD, he has tried to acclimate and made the best of it by helping others with a support group, public speaking events and he wrote a book that is for sale in the museums gift shop, “My Old Box of Memories; Thoughts of the Korean War” by Bill Allen. As he says, he took his Hell and helped others with it. Some people always struggle, and some think, what can I do to help others? You always have to help out the other guy. The staff at the museum considers him a true hero.

The museum features an array of military vehicles. One would be surprised to learn that with the exception of the aircraft, all of the vehicles at the museum are still completely operational and can even be driven. They refurbish and rebuild everything at the museum. When you arrive at the museum you will know you have come to the right place when you see the Russian Mig Jet in the parking lot. There is also a US Army 1951 Dodge ambulance that was used in WWI, Korea and Vietnam.

Another vehicular highlight of the museum is an artillery 203 millimeter howitzer. Each round weighs 200 pounds. It would have had a 10 man crew and the distance range on the rounds is 19-20 miles.

Another notable vehicle is a still operational 1923 Model T Huckster. The 1942 original Jeep Willie’s is the latest piece to be fully restored. With less than 4000 miles on it, we know it today as the great grandfather of the modern Jeep.

While often mistaken for a tank due to its large size turret with a 37 mm cannon, the M8 is actually considered a 6 x 6 armored reconnaissance vehicle. The museum’s M8 Greyhound is complete with a Browning .30 cal machine gun (de-milled of course) and other accessories used in WWII. The 4 man vehicle was used to scope out the enemy and report back.

Of all of the military vehicles housed on the property, the M8 that I got to ride in was my favorite. Of course it looks cool, but riding around the property with Frank in a real, fully restored WWII Reconnaissance M8 Vehicle was an absolute blast!! Viewing the museum is an experience in and of itself, but adding a ride on this M8 armored car, and you have taken your visit to a whole new level.

Your ride is sure to become the main topic of conversation as you convey this incredible experience as part of your museum visit. This ride is unique, fun and exciting for children and adults of all ages.

For those interested in all things military, be sure to check out the museum’s website which features a calendar of events as well as their blog/articles. Their special events range from a first responders chili cook-off and classic car show to a POW/MIA recognition day to a Ride Through History day, where visitors can ride in military vehicles and see WWII re-enactors from the 1st Infantry Division. Their blog has an array of interesting military-related articles about topics such as the carrier pigeons used in WWII and the British Army’s Amphibious Alvis Stalwart.

Since the museum is privately funded with no money from the city or state, a large part of their income comes from holding spe-cial events and doing event rentals. Anyone can rent their banquet room for a party or wedding or even rent out the entire museum for what is guaranteed to be a memorable event. Their ‘banquet room’ is called the Officers’ Club and it is a partial replica of a Quonset hut, primarily used in WWII as a mess hall, sleeping quarters or hospital.

In October the museum had its third annual Stars and Stripes USO Show. The USA Spirit of America Show let guests listen to the sounds of the Big Band era by the Lorri Hafer Swingin’ Band and singing impersonators. One of last year’s impersonators was Sir Daryl Cole, a cousin of the late Nat King Cole who always gives a show stopping Nat King Cole performance. The re-enactment show also features a full bar, show hostesses, swing dancing and dance lessons, vintage attire and a red carpet with 40s style paparazzi.

I take great pride in working with organizations that support and contribute to the men and women that protect and serve the country we all call home.

With great pride, I would like to share a bit of my background and introduce readers to my great grandmother, Anne Marie Debbaut-Monier.

I've always had the utmost respect and appreciation for the men and women in our armed services. Most of the men in my family have served proudly in the Air Force, Coast Guard & Navy. I have many friends and family serving today. In addition, I am extremely proud to say that I actually have lots of girlfriends who have chosen to serve. Not only has my family served in the military, but my great grandmother also did a service of her own in World War

II. My great grandparents decided to come to America from Belgium in 1929. They brought their 4 children with them to settle in California, but my great grandmother later returned to Belgium to care for her parents. She got caught in World War II and was unable to return to the United States. WWII endured and my great grandmother was stuck in Belgium with just her youngest daughter.

She lived in a store/sweet shop that she opened in the tiny town of Aspelare, across the street from a Catholic church. During this time, she was talking to the nuns from the church who said there was a very badly injured British soldier that they did not think was going to survive, so they had cleared a spot in the flowerbed outside to bury him.

Despite Nazis all around, my great grandmother and the nuns made a plan to meet in the alley later that night where they would sneak the soldier over to her shop, which later became a hiding place for British and American soldiers. She said she would look after him and do what she could. She did in fact nurse the soldier back to health and he then became the first of many. There were times the Nazis came into her home looking for soldiers, who unknown to them, were hidden in her attic. She would distract them by saying how they worked so hard and to take some baked goods and sweets with them. The story that has been passed down says there were times when this happened and the Nazis said oh, we know you’re a sweet lady, you would never do that and left with their pockets full of her sweets. While she did in fact do just that; she ended up saving dozens of British and American troops during the war.

She received awards from the British and US military for her civilian service in World War II. She received certificates of appreciation from Air Chief Marshal and General Dwight D. Eisenhower. In addition, I have a list of names of some of the soldiers that she saved. And a cute ending to the story is that the first soldier she ever saved returned after the war to thank her and

ended up falling in love and marrying her daughter! So I guess you could say supporting the military is in my blood!

I  started  with  an  interest  in  photography when my brother handed me a brownie camera when I was a young girl.   Those photos were all blurry, and I didn't have a very steady hand.   It  really wasn't until  I became a new mother

that  I wanted  to  capture  every moment of my daughter on film!  That became a very expensive hobby for someone not so good.   So  I  started  with  a  class  or  two  at  a  local

college.    Digital  Cameras  were  starting  to become popular, so I took the plunge.  I took on‐line  classes,  and  submitted  photos  for  critique on photo sharing websites.   Then came my first wedding about 5 years ago.  Disaster.   So  I  practiced,  practiced,  took more  classes,

and  practiced  some  more.    Gradually  I  have booked more weddings,  senior  shoots, and pet photography  shoots.    I  also  volunteer  my photography  to  a  couple  Dog  Rescues  in  the area.   I  try  to  limit myself  to any particular area of

interest.    Every  subject  has  it's  on  set  of challenges, and I welcome that.

Well, it's “Turkey Nite” time, Aggie is gone, but USAC must book some dirt ¼ or bigger to make what left the midget dirt racing fans a great show!

If Aggie was alive and had ASCOT, Joe Shuheen alive with the Springfield ¼ dirt high bank. The track that could really get all racers and race fans to come to would be “Bellview Hi Bank. It’s a ½ mile dirt in Kansas and 30` (or more hi banks, I haven't been there since the late 1970's or early 80's).

For you Historians the 1st Turkey Nite was at Gilmore Stadium in L.A. (that's Los Angeles everybody) It was in the late 30's and Bob Swanson won it. There has been 74 Turkey Nites, and Dave Daveland won the last one in 2013 at Perris Speedway in So. Calif. I will mention a known fact, Ron Shuman won 6 Turkey Nites and that's tough to beat!

It was always interesting to run my Ford V-8-60 against the Offy's. The Offy's built by Myer-Drake (Offenhauser) were only 90 cu in (later 100 inches) at first manufacture, and they were very light, straight 4 cylinders with dual over head cams and injectors.

The V-8-60 had 136 inches, cam in block, carburetors, and very poor breathing ability. The Offy put out one horse per inch at 7000 RPM and if you wanted more, just turn it 8000 or 9000 would put out 130 horse if you were brave enough and had the money to stay on the pedal!

The V-8-60 needed bunch to take it from 60 HP to stay with the Offy's. First tear the engine down, take a head gasket (I might add that Ford put studs in the block, and competitors used “head bolts” instead of studs.

Step 1 Anyway, take blue die paint block from the valves to the cylinder hole, then put the head gasket firmly down on the block and trace the outline from the bore. This is called “relieving” the block. You can go as deep as .100 thousands above the top ring land if you wish. Most don't! Beware of this if you run “Pop Up” pistons.

Step 2 Port & Polish - intake & exhaust ports. Polish the aluminum intake manifold ports, make them all the same size and shine! Take modeling clay push it up into the aluminum port, let it set for 5 minutes, then remove in one piece. (have a screw in it to pull out) Now grind the entry of the block port exactly the same shape as the intake manifold. (repeat same on all 8 cylinders) Very important to make ports shine like chrome. Use abrasive rolls up to 600 grits.

Step 3 Assuming no crank, cam, or valves in block boil it! Get it super clean! Also by boiling it out now, any residue left by steps 1 & 2 will be cleaned out.

Step 4 Buy 5 cans of PABA, liquid wrench or the equivalent. Spray everything down on entire block! This for rust after grinding in some states, MS, AL, LA, etc. NOTE (be sure have crank, rods piston balanced)

Step 5 Take block to an accredited speed shop, or machine shop. Have them install main bearings and cam bearings (or do it yourself.) Measure the above (mains & cam) go .010 over size then install or have shop install if no cam tool.

Step 6 Have the shop line bore both to accept your cam or crank. EXAMPLE: if your crank mains are STD, put in .010 bearings, I have them line bore to std. You should be able to turn crank in block by hand. Same with cam. If you install, line up the two zero's on crank & cam when installing.

Since we were talking engines, in my opinion, the greatest was the NOVI.

The engine was by Bud Winfield and Leo Goosen - designed- and built by Fred Offenhauser at Meyer, Drake & Fred

Offenhausers building. In 1946 it was installed in a brand new Frank Kurtis front drive chassis. The NOVI 167 cu in dual, ohc, two centrifugal superchargers, one blowing into the other one, and developed 510 hp!

Ralph Hepburn “got the ride” as they say in open wheel racing, and Ralph set a new track record for pole position in the Indy 500! He led the race for the first 44 laps and broke a supercharger shaft which made him fall out on the 45th lap.

Later that year after the race, Ralph was practicing in the NOVI and it spun into the wall and killed him. - he was 50 years old -

In 1921 Ralph was National Bike champ for Harley Davidson. In 1922 he was Nat'l Bike Champ for Indian! After Ralphs death Chet Miller took over the NOVI. From 1948 to 1953 and in practicing getting ready to qualify in 1953, the NOVI slammed into the wall and Miller was killed. His head was crushed, and his helmet and goggles were found 50 ft down the track from the NOVI. Other drivers thru the years, include Duke Nalon (retired), Paul Russo, Rex Mays, and Cliff Bergere.

Since 1946 - NOVI - set the one lap record 3 times, four lap record 2 times, on pole twice, and fast time 4 times.

Never mentioned by the many Indy 500 writers for the various papers and publications, is the two white round signs, one on each strait, on a pole, about 6 ft. high with a large X on it. They were installed after Ralph Hepburn crashed and died. They were to tell the NOVI'S where to get out of the throttle, the purpose was because super charged engines don't slow down like the normal engine.

Ralph broke the track record and led the race from the pole for 44 laps but broke a shaft on 45th. He used a 2” wide piece of 2 x 4 pine under the throttle pedal to keep from “flooring it” Duke Nalon said there was 2” of pedal he never wanted to use on his NOVI!

Brittany's Project, “Grillin Proud and Revin Loud,”

Car and Bike show Charenton, Louisiana Photos and story by: Denise “Neecy” Cobb The pin-up models and BBQ chefs were out in full force, at the first “Grillin Proud and Revin Loud,” Brittany's Project car and bike show. The show was held at the popular Cypress Bayou casino in Charenton, Louisiana on September 20, 2014. The weather was hot and humid, but that didn't stop the many avid hot rodders' and bikers from attending to support the cause. For several years, Mrs. Sandra Saucier, her husband Bruce, and many volunteers have been trying to raise money to build a center for children and adults with disabilities in Franklin, Louisiana. The Sauciers have a daughter named Brittany, and she was diagnosed at birth with Down's Syndrome. The family lived in Kentucky for a few years and that state had many resources for the disabled. They moved back to

Louisiana and discovered that the resources in their home state was lacking. Sandra thought long and hard about the situation, and decided to come up with a plan. Franklin desperately needed a place for adults and children like Brittany to go. A place where they could attend camps, classes and many other fun and educational projects; thus Brittany's Project was born! Sandra and her husband bought property for their home and also for the future Brittany's Project building. With the land donated by them, and a goal of $200,000 to raise to build the center, Sandra, her husband, and a crew of volunteers started planning the first show in 2012. They have had five other shows since. Right now, Brittany's Project has about $70,000 in the bank. It is a great beginning, but still far from their goal. Sandra is hoping that they can get the building started soon with the money raised so far. It still won't be enough for everything, but it's a start.

The show in Charenton, Louisiana is the third location to host a Brittany's Project event. In the spring, the largest event is held on the family property in Franklin, Louisiana. This show boasts a multitude of entertainment including a monster truck exhibition, rat rod and mini-bike races, bands, vendors and a pin-up contest. The other show that is also lots of fun is the Brittany Project show at Lirette, Ford in Morgan City, Louisiana. This event is a little more laid back, but there are many more vendors peddling their wares to the crowds and there are a lot of beautiful cars and trucks to admire in the Lirette, Ford parking lot. Last year, it was very exciting because Lirette, Ford generously raffled off a 1973 Mustang! This show will be coming up on November 15, 2014. Be sure to attend this fabulous show, and all of the future ones. You can be a part of creating something wonderful that will benefit many people! WAKE UP America ! ! ! At what point do we stop giving away OUR RIGHTS ? We've gone so far the other way . . . bent over backwards not to offend anyone.

Author E. B. White won numerous awards in his lifetime, and with good reason. Born in 1899, he was one of the greatest essayists of his time, writing countless influential pieces for both The New Yorker and Harper's; in 1959, he

co-authored the multi-million selling, expanded edition of The Elements of Style; he wrote children's books which have

gone on to become classics, such as Stuart Little and Charlotte's Web. He was also responsible for writing hundreds of wonderful letters. In March of 1973, he wrote the following perfectly formed reply to a Mr. Nadeau, who sought White's opinion on what

he saw as a bleak future for the human race.

North Brooklin, Maine 30 March 1973

Dear Mr. Nadeau: As long as there is one upright man, as long as there is one

compassionate woman, the contagion may spread and the scene is not desolate. Hope is the thing that is left to us, in a bad time. I shall get up Sunday morning and wind the clock, as a contribution to order and steadfastness.

Sailors have an expression about the weather: they say, the weather is a great bluffer. I guess the same is true of our human society - things can look dark, then a break shows in the clouds, and all is changed, sometimes rather suddenly. It is quite obvious that the human race has made a queer mess of life on this planet. But as a people we probably harbor seeds of goodness that have lain for a long time waiting to sprout when the conditions are right. Man's curiosity, his relentlessness, his inventiveness, his ingenuity have led him into deep trouble. We can only hope that these same traits will enable him to claw his way out.

Hang on to your hat. Hang on to your hope. And wind the clock, for tomorrow is another day.

Sincerely, (Signed, 'E. B. White')

- Public Welcome -

As thing slow down a little after Cruising the Coast. I have some new about a restaurant I have wrote about before. The Palace Grill downtown Gulfport. They

have started opening on Saturday mornings now. Kelly and one cook come in for the morning. This gives you another place to eat on Saturday.

The Palace was open on Saturday and Sunday for the Gulfport downtown block party hope some of you went by and ate. I did, but I eat there a least once a week. I know a few of you eat there just about everyday.

For something new go try the breakfast burrito. 2 eggs, cheese, bell peppers, onions, and the meat of your choice, with the salsa on the side.

The first of week of November I will be at the Emerald Coast Cruizin in Panama City Beach and report on a local restaurant down there.

Till we eat again J. R.
