on the 6th of July, 1785, the dollar was recommended as the new currency of the United States. While several other monetary systems were also proposed for the young republic, the dollar was eventually approved by congress in 1792 as the official currency of the U.S., making the United States the first nation in history to adopt a decimal coinage system.
The early currency of the U.S. did not exhibit faces of presidents, as is the custom now. In 2007, the United States Mint began honoring our nation’s presidents by issuing $1 circulating coins featuring their images in the order that they served. This year the Mint will be releasing the $1 coins honoring presidents Fillmore, Pierce, Buchanan and Lincoln. So if you have a chance this July, pick up some Presidential
coins at your local bank and, in the process, you can help teach your kids about our great country.

July 4, 2010 Independence Day honors the birthday of the United States of America and the signing of the Declaration of Independence. But this year, it will also mark the 50 year anniversary of the 50-star national flag, giving us all the more reason to fly the American flag with pride and honor.

July 23rd National Hotdog DayThe hot dog is one of America’s favorite sum-mer sandwiches and, for that reason, July is National Hot Dog month. Hot dogs are center stage on the grill, at the ballpark, and at picnics all across America. In fact, according to the Na-tional Hot Dog and Sausage Council, Americans will consume hundreds of millions of hot dogs on the Fourth of July alone. So have a couple of hot dogs for lunch or dinner and enjoy National Hot Dog month to the fullest.
Happy Birthday NASAOn July 29, 1958, President Dwight Eisenhower signed his name to the National Aeronautics and Space Act, creating the National Aeronautics and Space Agency, more commonly known as NASA. Over the past 52 years the agency has had some very monumental scientific achievements which cannot be overlooked. It has given us dust busters, cochlear implants, ultrasonically welded swimsuits, Tang, and freeze-dried food - not to mention, it has taken man to the moon, sent satellites and landers to distant planets, given us the Hubble Telescope, helped build the International Space Station, and created the amazing shuttle program.
This fall, NASA will conduct its final two shuttle missions from the Kennedy Space Center here in Florida. So if watching a shuttle launch has been on your to-do list, you need to start planning now. The shuttle Discovery is scheduled to blast off on September 16 with the shuttle Endeavor following in mid-November.
70 years ago,a confident “Bugs Bunny” made his debut appearance in A Wild Hare, directed by Tex Avery and released on July 27, 1940. It is considered the first appearance of both Elmer and Bugs
in their fully developed forms, and it was in this cartoon that Bugs first emerged from his rabbit hole to ask Elmer Fudd, “What’s up, Doc?”

My youngest daughter, Haylee, just turned three this month, and in the past few weeks, I’ve noticed a sig-nificant change in the way she plays. Where most two-year-olds, including Haylee just a few weeks ago, tend to play near, but not with other kids, now she is really enjoying interacting and “pretend play-ing,” especially with her older sister, Hanna.
I can’t tell you how many times in the last few weeks I’ve heard Haylee yell out, “Mom!” Then when I an-swer, she turns to me and shouts, “I’m not talking ‘a’
you!” It turns out, they are playing house, and Hanna is the “mom.” Or if Haylee is being the mom, she walks around calling Hanna “sweetie.” They’ve en-joyed having tea parties, setting up a restaurant, and most recently, pretending to be frogs jumping across the living room on pillows, a.k.a. lily pads.
Hanna really seems to enjoy this new side of her sis-ter since, at age six, she is still in the “pretend” play stage herself. It’s nice that it has coincided with the end of school, because Hanna was really dreading summer vacation with its lack of play time with her friends at school! Now that Haylee has started play-ing more in her style, summer vacation hasn’t been that lonely for Hanna after all!
For some strange reason, life always seems calm-er when my children are getting along. So for that reason alone, I love watching my two girls play so well together. It also gives me a little break because
I don’t get called in to participate in quite as many “pretend” situations as I used to. I still get invited to the tea parties, and I was a diner at the restaurant. But I no longer have to pretend to be a puppy dog’s mas-ter or participate in the frog jumping, because Haylee can fill in for me now. Unfortunately, I’m getting a little old to be hopping around the living room for too long.
I know it won’t last forever. Eventually, Hanna will start thinking that she’s too old to play with such a “baby” – I remember thinking in the third grade that I was too old to play with my sister who was in the second grade. But for now, it is a lot of fun to watch, and I intend to enjoy it for as long as it lasts!

Sunday Coupon Inserts – found inside your Sunday newspaper. Some weeks there may be only one insert, while other weeks there may be 2-3! On most Sundays, I typically will buy 6-8 news-papers, just for the coupons! The 50 cents that I spend per newspaper con-verts to hundreds in savings!
Online Printable Coupon Sites – Aside from Sunday inserts, my next favor-ite sources are websites with printable coupons. You can get some really great coupons for everyday items at sites like: coupons.com, redplum.com, and smart-source.com to name a few.
Store Coupons – Did you know that stores like Publix, Target, CVS and Walgreens offer store coupons? These store coupons are often found in book-lets, store fliers, and online. Here’s the best part - on most occasions, they can be paired with manufacturer’s coupons (this is what we call “stacking”) to maximize your savings!
For example, Publix recently had the new Schick Hydro 3 Razor on sale for $5.99. There was a $5 off manufactur-er’s coupon in the Sunday paper¸ and there was a Publix store coupon for $1 off. In the end, the razor was FREE with both coupons! I find that stacking cou-pons is one of the sweetest ways that I can get the most out of my money!
Magazines – The next time you receive a magazine in the mail, don’t throw it out! Skim through it to make sure that you are not missing out on coupons. I have found some great offers in magazines.
Online Coupon Clipping Sites – Did you know that you can order coupons from online coupon-clipping sites? Sites like the Coupon Clippers, My Coupon Hunter, and even Ebay offer multiples of coupons for a very low cost. In fact, if you’re looking for 10 coupons for your favorite product and don’t want to purchase 10 newspapers for the coupons, this may be more cost effective!
Baby Clubs – Did you know that many grocery stores now offer Baby Clubs? When my son Drew was a baby, I loved the coupons that I would get in my mail-box from Baby Clubs. They would send coupons for FREE diapers, formula and more!
In-Store Manufacturer’s Coupons – Next time you’re shopping at your local grocery store, make sure that you put on your bargain-hunting glasses! Have you seen the little “blinkie” coupon machines right in front of certain products? Those could be very valuable if that product goes on sale! Also, look for “peelie” coupons right on products and tear-pad coupons on the shelf. Grab these while you can!

The Fourth of July is not only an ideal time for families to celebrate our nation's freedom, but it also provides a great opportunity for families to have fun in the hot summer weather. A Fourth of July beach party is a fun idea that your family and friends will love, especially since we have so many great beaches right here in Pinellas County.
Even if you don't want to visit the beach, you can still decorate your backyard with beach accessories and create a beach ambience. You can decorate the table with centerpieces of sea shells and sand, provide a big sandbox for younger guests to play in, and add the element of water in the form of several wading pools, one large pool, squirt guns or a sprinkler.
To have a truly exciting July fourth party, you will need to have some outdoor recreation lined up; and nothing is better than some good old fashioned games to liven up the party. Here are some great games for you to play at any summertime party:

Badminton - Of all the “netted” games, badminton is the least strenuous. That is not to say that it has to be laid back, as some games become quite competitive. It can be highly strenuous, or not at all strenuous, depending on who is playing.
Horseshoes - The great thing about horseshoes is the fact that you can play it regardless of your age. Just make sure you have plenty of space so no one gets hurt.
Flag Football - For the young guns in the family, flag football is always a fun addition to a party. It is a great game for playing on the beach, and it is fun from the first snap.
Some other fun ideas you can try are a sand castle building contest, a beach scavenger hunt, a game of Frisbee, a game of hide and go seek or even a round of limbo. In the end, no matter what games you choose, with a little planning and creativity, you can host the perfect Fourth of July beach bash that might just become a beloved annual tradition!

Big Cypress Seminole Reservation
This month, our “Trip on a Tank” took us to the Big Cypress Indian Reservation, which sits right on the edge of the Florida Everglades, just about twenty miles north of “Alligator Alley.” Depending on the size of your vehicle’s gas tank, this trip might actually take slightly more than a tank of gas. But even if you do have to stop and fill up on the way home, it is still an adventure you won’t want to miss.
The 2,200 acre preserve at Billie Swamp Safari is filled with exotic animals and plants, most living in their natural environment. Visitors have the opportunity to observe wildlife up close through airboat rides and swamp buggy eco-tours.
Our adventure began with a thrilling ride through the swamp waterways on an airboat. Our smallest adventurers had to sit this one out though – children
must be at least four years old to ride the airboat. As we sometimes raced, sometimes meandered through the airboat trail, we watched deer, water buffalo, bison, raccoons, hogs, turtles, dozens of fish, hundreds of birds, and about a dozen alligators. Our guide, Raymond, was experienced and knowledgeable about all of the wildlife we encountered, and we learned a lot during our twenty minutes with him. David (age 13) and Daniel (age 9) both thought that the airboat ride was the best part of the whole trip.

They especially liked getting almost within touching distance of a 14-foot long alligator!
The highlight for the rest of the family came next as we boarded a swamp buggy for the hour long eco-tour above the untamed Everglades. Here, our driver Janet took us through the 2,200 acres of beautiful swampland, again pointing out the abundant animal and plant life, and giving us a lesson on the history of the Seminole tribe as well. Our young adventurers, Hanna (age 6) and Haylee (age 3) loved meeting Rosie the raccoon who loves to beg for treats whenever Janet drives by. Other highlights of the journey included seeing some
tiny newborn wild hogs, watching water buffalo chew their cud, and visiting with an ostrich who came right up to our buggy to hang out for several minutes. He even tried to take a bite out of Janet’s leg!
Lunch at the Swamp Water Café was also a treat. Here, guests can enjoy traditional Seminole fry bread, other Seminole delicacies such as catfish, frog legs, and gator tail, or American dishes like burgers, chicken fingers, and fries.
Our final activity of the day was the Snake and Alligator show where Colin educated and entertained us with snakes, both venomous and harmless, and a baby alligator. Thankfully, the show is held indoors, so we were sheltered from the brief afternoon thunderstorm that is quite common this time of year!
Other activities at the Billie Swamp Safari include a Swamp Critter Show, multiple animal exhibits, an authentic Seminole village, campfire storytelling, and a gift shop with Native American arts, crafts, clothing, jewelry, and souvenirs. Those who are truly adventurous also have the opportunity to spend the night in an authentic Seminole house, called a
“chickee.” Overnight guests also have the opportunity to take a Swamp Buggy Eco-Tour at night!
Billie Swamp Safari offers fun for all ages. Whether you spend a few hours, a full day, or even two days exploring, it promises to be an unforgettable experience for the whole family.

Rays Rally for Kids with CancerThis past month, the Rally Foundation emarked on a 35 day tour across the country taking cancer patients and their families to visit 14 Major League ball-parks, concluding at the All-Star Game in Anaheim. The goal of the Rally Fan-tasy Baseball Tour is to raise money and awareness for childhood cancer re-search, as well as provide children cur-rently battling cancer with the hope and determination to fight another day.
On June 23, on a game night at Tropi-canna Field, the Rally Fantasy Baseball Tour visited the St. Petersburg area. Four local “Rally Kids” -- children who have fought or are fighting cancer -- and their families had the opportunity to meet the Rays at batting practice before the team’s game against the San Diego Pa-dres and then attend the game as guests of Rays pitcher Dan Wheeler.
“Rally is very happy to be in the Tampa Bay area promoting the Rally Fantasy Baseball Tour. Getting to meet Dan and the other players has been great for the kids and our continuing goal to
raise awareness about the need for more childhood cancer research,“ said Dean Crowe, Founder and CEO of Rally.
Prior to the event at the stadium, Rally visited All Children’s Hos-
pital in St. Petersburg to meet with
childhood cancer researchers and hand out goody bags to children in the pedi-atric cancer unit.
“What Rally is doing for the kids is just great,” one of the parents told us. “These kids are going through so much right now, and these types of events help to bring some huge smiles to their faces.”
The Rally Foundation is a non-profit organization which raises funds for re-search to create better treatments with fewer long-term side effects for children with cancer. In the four years since its inception, Rally has given away more than $1.6 million in research grants across the country. For every dollar Ral-ly receives, 93 cents goes to research. It all started in a driveway. Nothing pulls a community together more than when a child gets sick. William Olson was that child, and when his brain can-cer returned after an 18-month remis-sion, more than 100 friends gathered in the Olson’s driveway to pray. A group of moms continued to meet in the Olson’s driveway every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning to keep praying for the Olsons as they faced an incredibly tough battle.
One evening, Dean Crowe, one of the Prayer Circle moms, and her husband, Reid, went to visit William in the hos-pital. At the time of the visit, William had zero white blood cells and was very sick. The couple started asking ques-tions about the treatments available for William. They were surprised at how limited his options were.
Dean asked William’s mom, Nancy, a sim-ple question, “What can we do to help?”
Nancy knew Dean was serious and asked for her help in redirecting funds to sup-port childhood cancer research. Nancy shared, “All that parents with children suffering from cancer really want is better treatment with fewer long-term debilitating side-effects. The only way this will happen is if childhood cancer research is better funded.” She further explained that childhood cancer is very different than adult cancer: Children and adults get different kinds of cancers, and therefore, they have to be researched and treated differently.
When Dean set out to help Nancy, she discovered that funding simply wasn’t available to redirect for childhood can-cer research. However, she knew that she and others desperately wanted to help. The pediatric cancer community at any given time is 10 million strong, and Dean knew that this community would rally to help raise money for research.
So the Rally Foundation was born. To-day, the Rally Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charity, has one mission: to raise money for childhood cancer research through grassroots initiatives. Over the course of the past three years, the Rally Foun-dation has given away almost 2 million dollars in research grants alone. “Our prayer was that God would do more than we could ask or imagine,” says Crowe. “And He absolutely has.”
And just so you know, William Olsen graduated from high school with a 4.0 grade point average and is now an honor student at Auburn University!

The A-B-Cs of SPF & UVSunlight is made up of two kinds of ultraviolet (UV) radiation: UVA and UVB. Both types damage skin and increase the risk of skin cancer. Even children and teens can get some types of skin cancer. Until recently, sunscreens only protected against UVB rays, but there are new products that may also block UVA rays.
Sunscreens are ranked with a Sun Pro-tection Factor (SPF). Choose a sun-screen with an SPF of at least 15--SPF 30 is recommended.
How to Use SunscreenApply sunscreen 20 to 30 minutes be-fore going outside. Apply to all exposed
skin (except eyelids), including ears and feet. Be extra careful around and just above the eyes. “Stick” preparations may be easier for this area. A hat with a wide brim provides added protection.
An SPF 30 can turn into an SPF 3 if you don’t apply enough sunscreen! Older children and adults should use two ounc-es of sunscreen for each application—that’s ¼ of an 8-ounce bottle). Younger children won’t need quite as much. Give the sunscreen a chance to be absorbed into the skin before putting on a shirt or getting in the car.
Sometimes a child has a skin reaction that may be a particular sunscreen in-gredient. Let your child’s doctor know if this happens, and ask the doctor to sug-gest a different sunscreen product.
Babies Need Extra ProtectionA baby’s skin needs extra protection. Sunscreen isn’t recommended before six months of age, so it’s important to avoid the sun. Stay in the shade and use a stroller with a canopy. Protect your baby’s skin with lightweight clothing. A hat with a wide brim helps protect your baby’s face and ears.
There are special sunscreens for babies 6 months and older. Before using a new sunscreen product, apply it in advance on a small patch of your baby’s skin to check for a possible reaction.

Q&A with Dr. Jay
Question: My 4 month old son seems to get this bump in his diaper area off and on. It can get as big as a chestnut and then disappear. What could it be?
Dr. Jay: This may be a hernia. It often presents in the region below the belly button and above their upper thigh. The reason that it comes and goes is because a part of abdominal contents is slipping in and out of a hole in the abdominal wall muscle. The contents may some-times just be fluid or sometimes part of intestines. Even if this is not present at the time of a doctor’s visit, this should be evaluated and treated as a potential hernia. If this bump is painless and can easily be pushed back into place, we call this a reducible hernia and can be operated on electively (at a future time). If the bump is very painful and cannot be pushed back, we call this a possible incarcerated hernia and you must take your child to the emergency room. Either a general surgeon or a urologist can perform this surgery and many sur-geons are using laparoscopic surgery to correct this.
Question: My 6 year old daughter was playing with our puppy and some how, her eye was injured. It keeps wa-tering, and is starting to become red. She says she sees okay, but that it hurts. What should we do?
Dr. Jay: Your daughter needs to be evaluated at a place which can detect a possible scratched cornea. This involves placing a special dye in her eye and then examining it under a special lamp. The scratch can be detected and your child will have an antibiotic drop placed in it. They will place a patch over the eye and it will remain covered until an ophthal-mologist can have a follow up exam. If a scratch is not detected, then a follow up appointment can be made at your
pediatrician’s office. Fortunately, most scratches heal very well and the eye will have no complications.
Question: After our delivery, the doctor said that our baby was jaun-diced and they put him under a lamp for several hours both days we were there. Now that we are home, is this something I should be concerned about? What are the signs of a jaun-diced child and what should we do if it shows up again?
Dr. Jay: If your newborn has had to be treated for jaundice (usually by photo-therapy), the doctor will not discharge your baby until they see that the baby’s bilirubin will not increase to a danger-ous level while off of phototherapy. It is very common for the baby, while at home, to become slightly jaundiced and their eyes become slightly yellow. But, if they are eating well, and they are hav-ing good urine output and good bowel movements, the jaundice will usually resolve in a few days. If your baby is jaundiced and eating poorly, it is imper-ative that you contact your pediatrician for advice. If your baby is slightly jaun-diced but acting healthy, you can put the baby in the sunlight for a few minutes (less than 10 minutes) a couple times a day, and this will help the jaundice im-prove. You can do this through a window so you don’t need to be directly outside. You should follow up with your pedia-trician within 48 hours after discharge.

What is Sleep Disordered Breathing?Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) is a characterization of sleep patterns in children which include; snoring, restless sleeping, awakening at night, obstruc-tive events (apnea), behavioral changes during the day (hyperactivity, lethargy, increased daytime fatigue) as well as dif-ficulty in arousal and difficulty in getting a child to sleep.
The most common cause of sleep disor-dered breathing in children is an enlarged adenoid and/or tonsils. It is a disorder, which if left untreated, results in difficul-ty in cognitive function during the day,
behavioral changes
and significantly decreased quality of life for children.
How can I tell if my child has Sleep Disordered Breathing?Snoring is very common in children, and in fact, it is prevalent in about 12% of children in the general population. How-ever, 1-3% percent of children will exhib-it not only snoring, but Sleep Disordered Breathing. Parents will usually notice this when families are together on vaca-tion and the child is sleeping in the same room. Frequently, the child will exhibit
signs of restless sleep, tossing and turning throughout
the night, awakening in the middle of the night (usually after
midnight), sleep w a l k i n g ,
bed wet-ting and t i r e d -
ness during the day. Other children who have to sleep in the same bedroom will usually complain about not being able to sleep well because of the noise of snor-ing, pauses in breathing or their bedmate sleeping restlessly and pushing them out of bed.
Why is it important to determine if my child has Sleep Disordered Breathing?Children who have prolonged Sleep Dis-ordered Breathing (greater than 4-months) and not due to an acute illness, suffer from significant decreased quality of life. Be-havioral changes such as hyperactivity, loss of concentration and cognitive func-tion have led to the diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder in children. In addition, children who have prolonged Sleep Dis-ordered Breathing can have cognitive and learning disabilities which can extend into the teenage years. More importantly, the benefits of diagnosis and treatment of this poor sleep pattern leads to a significant im-provement in quality of life. Greater than
80% of children who have documented Sleep Disordered Breathing will benefit from long term increases in cognitive abil-ity, behavioral stabilization and more even temperament. Prolonged bedwetting has also been associated with problems with sleeping and Sleep Disordered Breathing is no exception.

The next day the principal called the boy’s father. “I think I have cured your son of gambling,” he said.
“How did you do it?” asked Johnny’s father.
“Well, he looked at my beard and said, ‘Sir, is that beard real or fake? I wouldn’t mind betting five dollars that it is false.’”
“‘All right,’ I replied. ‘I’ll take your bet. Now pull it and see.’ Of course, my beard is real,” said the principal. “He had to pay me five dollars, so I’m sure
that will cure him of gambling.”
“Oh, no!!” groaned the father. “Last night he bet me ten dollars that you’d
let him pull your beard!”
An executive was interviewing a nervous young woman for a position in his company. He
wanted to find out something about her personality so he
asked, “If you could have a conversation with someone
living or dead, who would it be?”
The girl quickly responded, “The living one.”
A veterinarian was feeling ill and went to see his doctor. The doctor was asking all the usual questions – about symptoms, how long they had been occurring, etc. – when the vet interrupted him:
“Hey look, I’m a vet – I don’t need to ask my patients these kinds of questions. I can tell what’s wrong just by looking.” He smugly added, “Why can’t you?”
The doctor nodded, stood back, looked the patient up and down, quickly wrote out a prescription, handed it to him and said, “There you are. Of course, if that doesn’t work, we’ll have to put you to sleep.”

Know how much you love them:1 Too many men have a hard time saying “I love you” out loud. Is that you? If so, deal with it. The people who lose are the ones you say you love – so quit hiding behind your false sense of machismo and love out loud already. Is that clear enough?
Know that you believe in them:2 Too many parents sabotage independence by hovering - offering help when it’s not asked for, assum-ing their children lack the skills to survive. That posture easily becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Know how to take care of themselves:3 Boys and girls alike need to know how to cook, clean, do laundry, sew on a button, bal-ance a check book.
Know the meaning of “financial 4 freedom”: Do our children “get” the dis-tinction between “liberty” and “license”? Do they understand how easy it is to place most of their freedom in the hands of others and with little to show for the exchange other than consumer goods they will still be paying for long after the stuff has gone?
Know how to use a credit card:5 We’ve listed this separately because credit has the potential to literally ruin young lives before they get started. Begin when the kids are old enough to have a pre-paid debit card, and train from there. By the time your child leaves home they MUST understand the relationship between credit and the real money that’s nec-essary to back it up. Failure here will lead to more heartache and financial ruin than any other area of independent life.
Know how to assess their own medical 6 needs: Have they learned to read their own bodies, take their own temperature, treat a cold or the flu? Do they know when to go to the walk-in clinic and when to stay in bed?
Know where their moral compass is 7 located: Do they know how to make hard choices? Do they have a grounded sense of right and wrong? Have they had experience in making tough calls by themselves? Do they know what they believe?
Know where to turn to for help:8 Mom and Dad might not always be there. Are your kids confident in finding or building commu-nity? Beyond the yellow pages, what kind of support system do they already have in place other than home?
Know the ins and outs of official 9 documents: Can they file their own taxes? Get a drivers’ license? Apply for a passport? Buy an airplane ticket? Look for a job? Vote? If your child is 16 and still needs your help in these areas, then it’s time to take an active interest.
Know how to locate your papers, your 10 will and carry out what “arrangements” you have made: None of us are immortal, and our children need to have the confidence to act in the event of our untimely demise. Have you talked about it? Do they understand your wishes? Has anything important been left unsaid?

Congratulations to Walter, Keosha and little Alaylah Simmons on being select-ed the July “Family of the Month”. With sweet dispositions and infectious smiles, the Simmons seem to bring joy to all of those around them. “We love it here in Pinellas,” the Simmons told us. “We en-joy our community, our church, and the family friendly environment Pinellas County has to offer.”
Keosha was born and raised right here in Pinellas County, while Walter grew up in Savannah, Georgia. Walter moved to Pinellas County a little over five years ago, which is also when he met “the love of his life.” The two of them met at Bay Walk one evening, when Walter hap-pened to notice Keosha and her mom. As Keosha tells it, “Walter won my mom’s heart first and then the rest was history.”
Walter and Keosha are both very active in the community. Walter, who was an outstanding football player in college,
is employed with The City of St. Peters-
burg. In his spare time, Walter stays very busy presenting health and nutrition seminars while also teaching proper use of a state of the art nutritional cooking system - Salad Master.
Keosha is an Elementary school teacher for Imagine School in St. Petersburg and this past school year she was selected as “Teacher of the Year” for the school. Keosha has a true passion for kids and the community she works in. “My goal is to positively impact every child I come in contact with,” Keosha told us. “I love sharing my passion for education. I want each child to know their dreams are obtainable, because I truly believe that with a firm educational foundation anything is possible.”
While they both have many responsibili-ties with their careers, the responsibil-ity they both cherish the most is that of raising their little princess. “Parenting is a lot of hard work,” the Simmons told us. “But it is well worth the time and effort. We have been blessed with a phenom-enal little girl. She has an amazing spirit
and she always keeps a smile on her face. We can-not imagine our lives with out her!”
The Simmons are a very sweet and loving family and that is why they are our July “Family of the Month.”

Meet the KidsAlaylah is 2½ years old and she is a very outgoing little girl. She enjoys playing in her sandbox, swimming, tumbling, puzzles, reading, and cooking. She attends a wonderful pre-school that focuses on educating each child. Alaylah is able to identify all her shapes, colors, letters, and numbers and she recently began working on rhyming words. In her limited spare time she enjoys kicking back watching Wonder Pets and Ni-Hao, Kai Lan.

Moulin RougeThe Hungry Family has wandered the world through the tables of local restaurants, and this month was no exception. Our gracious hosts were the staff at Moulin Rouge, where we joined them for Sunday Brunch.
Moulin Rouge is a French Brasserie style restaurant and lounge, recently renamed and renewed by Chef/owner Olivier and his gracious wife. Eve-nings feature adult events, but Thurs-day and Sunday mornings offer a family-friendly opportunity to sam-ple genuine French food along with French-American fusion offerings. Every Thursday from 7:30 to 10:30 am, the chefs present fresh home-
made French pastries and bread. Sundays offer a spread of of-ferings in a Sunday buffet, but by far, the Hungry Family recommends the pastries. Really, one can taste the ex-pertise of the three classically trained French chefs in the pain au chocolate or the specialty raisin-pastries. Eat salad only for a week before you visit, because turning down the croissant or the made-to-order crepe would be a true shame. Gypsy VannerGypsy Vanner horses earned their name pulling gypsy caravans in Great Britain and the United King-dom. They were bred by gypsies to be strong, gentle, and beautiful work horses, but the breed was not formally recognized until 1996, when the Gypsy Vanner Society was founded. Gypsy Vanners have long, flowing manes and tails and “feathered” hooves, but can come in many different colors.
Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo recently welcomed three Gypsy Vanner mares from the Gypsy Vanner Horse Society, and also recently welcomed the birth of a Gypsy Vanner foal. You can visit the Gypsy Vanners at the pony barn in Wallaroo Station, where two of the adults will soon join the Pony Trek ride.
Day GeckoMadagascar Grandis Day Geckos, also known as Giant Day Geckos, are na-tive to northern and northwestern Madagascar, but can be found in Florida as well, where many who had been kept as pets have been released. These bright

This month at MOSI marks the arrival of a new traveling exhibit called CSI: The Experience. The interactive exhibit, based on the hit TV show “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” gives visitors the chance to play the role of crime scene investiga-tor as they use forensic science in a state-of-the-art laboratory to solve a crime scene mystery.
You and your young ones can learn the basics of crime solving techniques by starting with one of the oldest—and most fun—forensic techniques around: fingerprinting.
Fingerprints have been the standard way of identi-fying people for over 100 years. In fact, more crim-inals are identified by their fingerprints than any other method. The reason they are such a valuable tool is that out of the billions and billions of finger-prints that have been recorded, no two have ever been found to be the same. Even identical twins have different fingerprints.
Your fingerprints develop before you are born, and will stay the same throughout your entire life. No matter how old you get and how much your looks change, your fingerprints are always the same.
Humans have oils in their skin, causing us to leave fingerprints on nearly everything we touch. Even if
you can’t see them, if you have touched something your prints are there. Special UV lights, super glue fumes and electronic scanning are some of the methods used to find fingerprints that aren’t vis-ible just by looking at them, but using finger print “dust” is perhaps the easiest way to find them.
You can do your own fingerprint dusting and identifying with a few simple tools: some type of smooth glass surface, some talcum powder, a roll of wide clear tape, some black paper and a magni-fying glass.
First, press your thumb firmly against the glass.1.
Then gently shake some talcum powder over your 2. sweaty thumbprint and blow off the excess, being careful not to blow any powder into your eyes.
Now smooth a piece of the tape over the thumb-3. print and peel it off carefully.
Stick the piece of tape onto the black paper, and 4. the fingerprint is now visible.
In addition, you can use black ink pads (with wash-able ink) to transfer prints over to a white sheet of paper and create a fingerprint record chart. With this you can examine the prints from the glass to try to match them up with the owner.

It is no secret that everyone associates fireworks with Independence Day cel-ebrations. It is so easy to become enam-ored with the sights and sounds and con-sequently to be tempted to stop at one of the many roadside stands and buy a few to recreate your own show; however, it is important to remember that fireworks can be extremely dangerous causing se-
rious burns and significant personal in-juries. Each year over 8,000 people are injured using consumer fireworks. Even sparklers, which are considered by many to be harmless, can reach temperatures of more than 1,000° F!
You can prevent firework-related injuries. I suggest that you leave the fireworks to the professionals and do not use con-sumer fireworks; however, if you choose to use consumer fireworks please follow the following fireworks safety tips: DISCLAIMER - Nothing in this informational public service article should be construed as giving legal advice and

If you don’t believe me, listen to some of the experts in the field.
The non-profit group National Fire Pro-tection Association (NFPA) urges every-one to treat fireworks, whether legal or illegal for consumers, as suitable only for use by trained professionals. According to the NFPA, amateur fireworks use endan-gers not only the users but also bystanders and surrounding property and structures. The NFPA goes on to remind us that “py-rotechnic devices ranging from sparklers
to aerial rockets cause thousands of fires and serious injuries each year.”
Some experts are even more resolute in their analysis. “Safe and sane fireworks don’t exist,” says Dr. John Hall, NFPA’s Division Manager of Fire Analysis and Research. “When things go wrong with fireworks, they go very wrong, very fast, far faster than any fire protection provi-sions can reliably respond.”
“Fireworks are dangerous and unpredict-able, especially in the hands of amateurs,” says Judy Comoletti, NFPA’s Division Manager of Public Education. “The few seconds of pleasure those fireworks may bring are not worth the risk of injury, per-manent scarring, or even death.”

Most everyone appreciates the person who can generate a smile from us. A smile reaches down inside of us and pulls to the surface reasons for rejoicing in our lives. This is a gift we can pass on to ev-eryone we meet, a gift we can pass on to ourselves, family and friends; a gift that costs us only the effort of giving. Com-ing home and giving my 16 month old daughter a smile and in return receiving
a smile is priceless. Sitting at the dinner table and saying something to make our families smile and laugh is contagious. Giving our spouse a funny look just for the purpose to make them smile, or tick-ling and playing with our children brings harmony and unity into the family.
A smile can be triggered by a thought, an idea, or remembrance of happy times past. We can allow the effect of that smile to permeate our being, warming us and reminding us to be happy and relax. A smile is contagious! There may not be any visible signs of acknowledgement of a smile, but something within us will tell us we’ve been given a gift. Although there may be times when it is inappropri-ate to giggle or laugh aloud, a genuine smile is never out of place. When you feel full of joy everything about and around you changes for the better. Remember! Wear a smile and have friends, wear a frown and have wrinkles!

Not too long ago we got a new Golden Retriever puppy. Upon seeing the dog, Susy cried out, “But Mommy, I wanted an elephant.” Children say the funniest things, and they naturally bring humor into young families. One of the greatest medicines in the world is laughter. In our homes we desperately need to laugh.
One of the qualities I pray for regularly in my children is that they have a sense of humor. Laughter can cover a multitude of mistakes. It can ease the pain of many failures, and it can cut through a tense moment turning it from potential hurt and restoring a threatened rela-tionship. A home marked by joy is a home where we learn to laugh at ourselves and our situations. Humor can bring perspective back into a situation that has got-ten far too serious. To be able to laugh at oneself is a great trait. As we attempt to laugh at ourselves we will create a lightheartedness in the family.
One word of caution is in order, though. Humor that is sarcastic is rarely helpful. Indeed, it can be biting and destructive. There is much that is funny that is whole-some. Sarcasm is not necessary for entertainment.
As moms, we need to develop the quality of being able to laugh at our situations. Some people are more naturally gifted with a sense of humor than others. In some it must be cultivated.
Sometimes doing silly skits and playing practical jokes can add a dimension of humor. We have to carefully pick our practical jokes. This year I dressed up in a costume and went to my son’s junior high Halloween dance. He didn’t recognize me for the longest time, and when one of his girlfriends did, it was so funny. Now I’d never do that to my high-schooler. It would embarrass her to death.
Once, Johnny and I went disguised as very old people to a retirement party for a close friend. Our kids helped us get ready, and it was a great joke for all.
One April Fool’s Day, my husband and I came home from a dinner engagement to find that our children had short-sheeted our bed, put Saran Wrap over our toilet seat, and stockings over our shower nozzle! Loud gig-

gles were heard coming from each of their bedrooms as our shrieks let them know we had fallen for their pranks. As adults we should take care not to lose the sense of fun that children have, and we must be creative in cultivating humor in our homes.
Another key in developing humor lies in keeping our perspective. Something that seems so important right now will often seem irrelevant next month. People’s perspectives are so different. Chris once told me that he had found a very valuable antique nickel – made in 1964!
A couple of years ago we went on a trip out West. We met a farmer in a small Kansas town of 300. He told us that he had gotten fed up with that town because it was getting too big, so he was moving to the country. On
this same trip we took the children to see a replica of a frontier village. They saw demonstrations of women weaving and making pottery. They were so amazed at how hard women had to work back in those days! Be-ing reminded of the many different perspectives peo-ple have will help in understanding one another and will provide opportunities for humor. An atmosphere which is marked by joy will prevail in a home where laughter is frequent.

I took a stroll down memory lane recently – not intentionally, but just in my daily activities. I was driving through Gulfport and drove past Boca Ciega, the school I attended back in the 60’s.
To my surprise, the main building of the school is no longer there. I was sitting in that building in 10th grade English the day that Presi-dent Kennedy was shot. Our prin-cipal came over the public address speaker and asked the students to bow in silent prayer for our coun-try. Is the missing building a sign of progress? Maybe so, but it is still hard to say goodbye to memories!
A few weeks ago, Kristen, our mid-dle daughter celebrated her birth-
day. She and her husband, Andrew (and daughter SaraRose) wanted to celebrate at the Roaring Twenties Pizza and Pipes in Ellenton. Our youngest daughter and her family were visiting, so we all joined to-gether for the celebration. We to-tally enjoyed the evening, with de-licious Italian food and an amazing concert of requests at the mighty Wurlitzer organ. Imagine our sur-prise when we were told that the venue would be closing for good the following weekend! Little Sa-raRose had danced the night away with her Daddy, and her little cous-ins were swept up in the majestic playing of the organ—especially the Chattanooga Choo Choo!
It made me start thinking of “redeeming the time” with my grandchildren, and taking them to places that have been important in our lives. “Grampy” proposed to me on the pier at the end of Pass-a-Grille beach, and I can remember when “the Don” was just the empty pink building on the beach—how neat to tell the story of its restora-tion!
A close friend recently gave us an open letter to his grandchildren to get our opinion about it. What a treasure to leave for your grandchildren—just thoughts on life—finances, friend-ships, dating. How I would love to have my granddad’s words left to me on paper! Thoughts that we as grand-parents may think are unimportant

QUESTION: As a father, what should I be trying to accomplish with my son in these teen years?
DR. DOBSON: Someone has said, “Link a boy to the right man and he sel-dom goes wrong.” I believe that is true. If a dad and his son can develop hob-bies together or other common interest, the rebellious years can pass in relative tranquility. What they experience may be remembered for a lifetime.
I recall a song, written by Dan Fogel-berg, which told about a father who shared his love of music with his son. It is called “Leader of the Band,” and its message touches something deep within me. The son talks of a father who “earned his love through discipline, a thundering, velvet hand.” The father’s “song is in my soul.” The son himself has become a “living legacy to the lead-er of the band.”
Can’t you see this man going to visit his aged father today, with a lifetime of love passing between them? That must have been what God had in mind when he gave dads to boys.
Let me address your question directly: what common ground are you cultivating with your impressionable son? Some fa-thers build or repair cars with them; some construct small models or make things in a woodshop. My dad and I hunted and fished together. There is no way to de-scribe what those days meant to me as we entered the woods in the early hours of the morning. How could I get angry at
this man who took time to be with me? We had wonderful talks while coming home from a day of laughter and fun in the country. I tried to maintain that kind of contact with my son.
Opportunities to communicate openly and build the father-son relationship have to be created. It’s a goal that’s worth whatever it takes to achieve.
QUESTION: Our twenty-four-month-old son is not yet toilet trained, although my mother-in-law feels he should be under control now. Should we spank him for using his pants in-stead of the potty?
DR. DOBSON: No. Suggest that your mother-in-law cool down a bit. It is en-tirely possible that your child can’t con-trol himself at this age. The last thing you want to do is punish a child of any age for an offense which he can’t com-
prehend. If I had to err on this matter, it would be in the direction of being too late, rather than too early. Further-more, the best approach to potty train-ing is with rewards and encouragement rather than with punishment. Give him a sucker (or sugarless candy) for perform-ing his duty. When you’ve proved that he can comply, then you can hold him responsible in the future.
QUESTION: I’m twenty-two years old and am still living at home. It’s driving me nuts. My folks are in my face every day. They want me to get a full-time job ‘cause I only work part-time at a convenience store. Why can’t they get off my case and leave me alone?
DR. DOBSON: With all respect, I think it’s time for you to pack. Many young adults like you continue to hang around the house because they don’t know what to do next. That is a recipe for trouble. Your mother and father can’t help “par-enting” you if you remain under their noses. To them, it seems like only yes-terday since you were born. They find it difficult to think of you as an adult.
The way you live probably irritates them, too. They hate your messy room, which would require a tetanus shot just to walk through. They don’t like your music. They go to bed early and arise with the sun; you keep the same hours as hamsters. You drive the family car

like you’ve been to Kamikaze Driving School. They want you to get a job -- go to school -- do something. Every day brings a new argument -- a new battle. When things deteriorate to that point, it’s time to get out.
QUESTION: I’ve heard that we for-get more than 80 percent of what we learn. When you consider the cost of getting an education, I wonder why we put all that effort into examinations, textbooks, homework and years spent in boring classrooms. Is education re-ally worth what we invest in it?
DR. DOBSON: In fact, it is. There are many valid reasons for learning, even if forgetting will take its usual toll. First, one of the important functions of the learning process is the self-discipline and self-control that it fosters. Good stu-dents learn to follow directions, carry out assignments, and channel their mental faculties. Second, even if the facts and concepts can’t be recalled, the individ-ual knows they exist and where to find them. He or she can retrieve the informa-tion if needed. Third, old learning makes new learning easier. Each mental exer-
cise gives us more associative cues with which to link future ideas and concepts, and we are changed for having been through the process of learning. Fourth, we don’t really forget everything that is beyond the reach of our memories. The information is stored in the brain and will return to consciousness when prop-erly stimulated. And fifth, we are shaped by the influence of intelligent and char-ismatic people who taught us.
I wish there were an easier, more effi-cient process for shaping human minds than the slow and painful experience of education. But until a “learning pill” is developed, the old-fashioned approach will have to do.
QUESTION: Whether it be on dra-matic shows or the evening news, the TV seems to showcase death more than ever before. What do you think it will do to us to continue watching extreme violence night after night?
DR. DOBSON: Walter Lippmann once wrote that a saturation of this kind of sensationalism can actually destroy a people and a culture. I agree with him completely. We’ve already come to the point when decent people are afraid to go outdoors at night. We live in terror. No one is safe, not even old people who have so little that criminals really want. Television does have the power to de-stroy us as a nation. I fear it may already have damaged us beyond repair.
