at least seven days every month.” That made life difficult for this busy mom

robotic-assisted hysterectomy at South Baldwin Regional Medical Center,”

said Michelle. “The incisions were tiny and healed fast. I was able to cater

an event after just two weeks. Having this procedure is the best thing I’ve

Letter from the editor

Sometimes we go to events to hear our favorite bands, enjoy good food or let our children play. But so many events in our area do more than just entertain us — they teach us. No matter how old we are, learning new skills and becoming more well-rounded individuals builds self-esteem and creates opportunities for more fun in the future.

There are so many things to do in Baldwin County that fit into the educational fun category. We can enjoy ourselves at a one-day event like the Delta Rendezvous and leave knowing the basics of hunting and fishing, sign our kids up for a summer art class at the Gulf Coast Art Alliance in Gulf Shores or learn all about sea-sonal fruits and vegetables at one of the area’s summer farmers markets.

You’ll read about these opportunities and more in this issue of the Gulf Coast Buzz, and our columnists might inspire you to take up a new hobby or two.

We want to help you not only have fun and be entertained, but also to improve your quality of life — so look through the Buzz the first and third Friday of each month and then get out there and try something new!

The Delta Rendezvous, a new event benefitting area food banks, is a dream event for hunters, fishermen, out-door enthusiasts and even crafters.

The Rendezvous will con-sist of three separate events: a fishing tournament, a series of archery tournaments and an indoor craft vendor show.

“It’s all about celebrating the Delta and educating people about outdoor activities as well as raising funds and food for hunger relief right here in Baldwin County,” said Kristina Angelone, North Baldwin Chamber of Commerce community liaison.

Jason Smith, chief meteorologist for Fox 10, will be the event’s em-cee, and Delta expert and host of the documentary “America’s Amazon” Ben Raines will lead a seminar. Big game hunter Joelle Bates will help

Sunfish sailboat races at

Pirate's Cove

OUTdOORs

by Caroline harrisDirector, Wind and Water Learning Center in Orange Beach

Every Wednesday night during the summer months (starting now), I look forward to the return

of Pirates Cove’s Sunfish sailboat races. As long as the weather is decent and the wind is blowing a few knots, a friendly group of sailors show up at Pirates Cove for camaraderie and a leisurely race. The event brings together all ages — kids and adults — as long as you have a sailboat to use or borrow.

Sunfish sailboats are preferred for uniformity, but the group welcomes any small dinghy sailboats that want to participate.

After socializing a bit, everyone sets sail around 5:30 p.m. to race to a set marker and back — sometimes a channel marker, sometimes Bear Point Marina across the Intracoastal Waterway. The destination is always to be decided, and the starting line is the most relaxed start sailors will ever experience. The “winner” normally just gets bragging rights, but perhaps you can talk someone

into buying you a cheeseburger or drink. Come join the crew for fun on the water this summer.

If you go WhAT: Sunfish sailboat racesWhEN: Wednesday nights around 5 p.m., weather permittingWhErE: Pirates Cove, 6664 County Road 95, Elberta, AL 36530WhAT To brING: Sunfish sailboat, or similar small dinghy sailboat + PFDs

did you know? The Sunfish sailboat is a personal size, beach launched sail-ing dinghy that has a pontoon type hull carrying a lateen sail mounted to an un-stayed mast. The Sunfish brand-name has become so widely known it is often misapplied generically to refer to any board-style boat with a lateen sail.

Lindsay schumacher

by Lindsay schumacherIndependent marketing and public relations consultant, outdoors enthusiast

often known as “golf with a shotgun,” sporting clays is a sport that can be enjoyed by everyone,

no matter their age, gender or skill level. It consists of an outdoor course of 10 to 15 shooting stations, where participants aim for a series of clay targets. These targets are launched at various angles, speeds and distances to closely imitate the patterns of certain live game, such as birds and rabbits, making it a favorite among bird hunters wanting to sharpen their skills for the upcoming season. Clay shooting is also enjoyed by many non-hunters who simply enjoy the challenge of this recreational pastime — no hunting license is required to participate in this sport.

did you know? Sporting clays and skeet shooting are not the same. Skeet shooting consists of repeatable fixed target presentations, whereas sporting clays simulates the unpredictability of live-quarry shooting over a natural terrain course.

restauranteurs Lane and Ginny Gilbert have turned the building that formerly housed the Asian-

inspired Zen into a more traditional sea-food and steak restaurant.

The menu at Gilbey’s Seafood and Steak features modern, fresh American cuisine, and Chef John Odom holds the restaurant to the same high standards as its sister restaurant, Villaggio Grille.

“We decided to change from Zen to Gilbey’s to make it more mainstream — something people would eat everyday,” Odom says. “It’s the same great ingredi-ents, but more American. Everything is still made from scratch, and we’re using local produce, like let-tuce from Craine Creek Farm in Loxley and vegetables from Local Appetites in Silverhill.”

The steaks at Gilbey’s are upper 2/3 Choice beef, and Gilbey’s serves Gulf shrimp, yellowfin tuna, grouper, Maine lobster and hand-selected diver scallops.

W ant to have a great sum-mer with the family with-out breaking your budget?

You’re in luck! Baldwin County is a great place for a “staycation.”

Everyone wants to hit the beach in the summer, and in order to get to one of South Baldwin’s great beaches, you have to pass through Foley, home to one of my kids’ favorite places to visit, the Foley Railroad Museum.

You’ll find a large model train track, a train history museum and real train cars for your kids to explore — all for free. Find out more about it at FoleyRailroadMuseum.com. When you are done, take the family to Stacey Drugs Old Tyme Soda Fountain on Laurel Avenue for hot dogs, ice cream, shakes, malts, sodas and more. We were able to feed our family of four for less than $25.

After a visit to Stacey’s, take the family down 59 and hit the Gulf Shores Public Beach. It is free to use the public

beach, and there are free parking lots located at East Second Street, West Fourth Street, West Fifth Street, West 13th Street and at Lagoon Pass. The paid parking lots are just $5 per day.

After spending the afternoon on the beach, your kids will be hungry. There are a lot of great restaurants in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, and many can be pricey. Plan ahead and find one within your budget. And make sure you save room for a hot doughnut from Krispy Kreme in Foley on the way home.

Gulf Coast Arts Alliance puts local art in the spotlight

The Art Gallery of the Gulf Coast Arts Alliance, located in the Waterway Village of Gulf Shores, features the works of some of the region's most talented artists.

The public is invited to an open house reception on May 22 begin-ning at 5:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served, and attendees can enjoy musical entertainment while viewing the gallery’s art.

The GCAA Gallery will allow re-gional and local artists of all trades to showcase, promote and sell their work.

“We invite all the local artists and everyone to come,” said Maria Bastin, GCAA chairman. “All of the artists love it, and the community and visi-tors love it. It's a place they can come and view the local art and even get some to take home.”

In addition to the art gallery, which will be open Monday through Satur-day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., GCAA is also hosting a monthly art market at Meyer Park, which features kids' art activities, local artists, local musicians

and demonstrations. And throughout the summer, art

classes for adults and children will be offered at the gallery. A schedule of classes is posted on the GCAA's website.

2014 Art Market dates June 7, August 2, September 6, October 4, November 110 a.m. – 5 p.m. Meyer Park, Gulf Shores

Gulf Coast musicians entertain all year long, and they’ll be entertaining for the Second Annual Shindig on the Sand the first weekend in June.

The proceeds brought in by the crowds will go to the Flora-Bama’s Gulf Coast Musicians’ Assistance Fund (GCMAF), which is intended to keep Gulf Coast music alive by sustaining its musicians in mind, body and spirit. It provides a way for GCMAF to partner with health providers and help cut the high cost of

urgent medical care for its musicians. Even a simple, low-cost physical can result in early detection of problems.

Headliner Billy Currington will play at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 7. This is a separate ticketed event costing $40 with a discount going to Flora-Bama membership card holders. Tickets are available in the Flora-Bama gift shop and at www.florabama.com.

All of your local favorites from along the coast and several bands from New Orleans will grace the Flora-Bama stages, including the seven-piece Gravy Flavored Kisses.

Gulf State Park hosts authentic beach luau

by John [email protected]

An exciting opener to the season will be a luau Memorial Day weekend on the Beach at Gulf State Park.

Park Superintendent Lisa Laraway said a top-notch company is being brought in to conduct the first-time

event.“We brought in entertainers from a professional

luau company from Fort Lauderdale,” Laraway said. “We’ve got dancers, fire dancers, an em-cee. It’s going to be very well done.”

A VIP section will cost $75 a ticket, which will include front-row seating, food buffet and open bar. The general seating area will cost $45 per ticket and includes one trip to the buffet and two drinks.

“We’re having 80 people in the VIP, which is the first section right next to the stage,” Laraway said. “They’ll get a fresh lei of flowers. They are flying them in from Taiwan. It’ll be roped off with lighting and tiki torches, and we can seat 304 people.”

Outside the roped area, beach goers and other visitors will be able to see the action,

and the park will be selling drinks and some simple menu items.

“We’ll have tents where the general public can stand if they want to come out and watch

the luau, and we will have drinks for sale and a minimal menu in the tent,” Laraway said.

When you think about farmers markets, you probably imagine vegetables — perfectly ripe tomatoes, crisp

cucumbers and fresh okra. But farmers markets have more than just vegetables

these days. At summer markets in Baldwin and Mobile counties, you’ll find freshly baked bread, local honey, flowers, art and entertainment. Farmers markets are a place to buy locally grown food, play outside and take a deep, relaxing breath.

With summer comes the region’s most anticipated crops, beautiful weather and looser schedules — spend a lazy afternoon at one of these markets. You won’t regret it.

Tell Cliff what you are reading at [email protected]

Author Gabrielle Zevin will be available for questions and book signings at Fairhope’s Page and Palette June 9 at 6 p.m.

For this edition of “Be-tween the Pages,” we look at Gabrielle

Zevin’s novel, “The Sto-ried Life of A.J. Fikry,” which also happens to be the book chosen for Fairhope’s 10th annual One Town One Tale Com-munity Read.

From start to finish, Zevin’s “A.J. Fikry” is a lively story, filled with loveable characters, in-teresting relationships and a spellbinding mys-tery woven throughout the text.

Fikry, the titular char-acter, owns a neighbor-hood bookstore, Island Books, which has a sign that reads “No Man Is an Island; Every Book Is a World.” The love of books and their effect on people is rampant throughout the book,

making it the perfect read for those of us who know of the power the written word can bring.

At the beginning, things are not going well for Fikry, as he loses his wife, his book sales are down and one of his most prized possessions (a rare book) is stolen. He retreats into isolation, but is brought out after receiving a strange pack-age from a seemingly un-known source that will change his relationships with others and his view of himself.

Since so many Fairhop-ers will be reading this, I don’t want to give too many details away, but, suffice it to say, “A.J. Fikry” is a phenomenal read that all true biblio-philes will love and ap-preciate.

sweetwater 420 This is a familiar extra pale ale we’ve all seen. Sweetwater 420 has enough bitterness and floral flavor to be refreshing, but very easy to drink.

sierra Nevada Celebration Ale Celebration is a fresh hop ale, brewed seasonally late in the year to celebrate the arrival of the hop harvest. It is a variation on an IPA, using loads of fresh, wet hops. It is typically only available around Christmas and New Year, but many retailers carry it.

Great divide Titan IPAThis is a favorite west coast style IPA. Titan has a nice bitter pop that leaves an incredible after taste. Sip this beer slowly at a warmer temperature than you might be used to, say around 50 F, to get the full hoppy experience.

bells hopslamI mention this hard-to-find brew because it is wildly delicious for folks who are crazy about hops, but want great balance and depth of flavor. It lives up to the name; it will rock your mouth with a bitter punch that hop fanatics love. But it isn’t all bite. This brew finishes with a touch of sweetness imparted by honey.

sauvignon blonde Introduced six years ago, this Sauvignon Blanc has featured a different label now for the past three vintages. The 2013 vintage has aromas of fresh violets and flavors of Meyer lemons and pears.

Norma JeaneThis “young” merlot wine fea-tures photographs taken of the young actress in the years just before she captured the imagi-nation of the American public as Marilyn Monroe.

Jon robitailleBeer/Wine SpecialistCain’s Piggly Wiggly

Some 50-plus years after her death, Norma Jeane Mortenson is still making a splash, but this time in a bottle of wine. Of course, Norma Jeane is better known as Marilyn Monroe, and for the past 27 years, her images have graced the labels of Marilyn Wine’s Marilyn Merlot series.

Since its inception in the 1980s, each new vintage has donned a different label with Marilyn’s likeness, thus creating somewhat of a frenzy for enthusiasts to get their hands on the newest edition each spring and making it one of the fastest-appreciating wines on the market. Avid collectors might be interested to know that the ini-tial 1985 vintage of Marilyn Merlot is still available on the winery’s website at a cost of around $3,800 a bottle.

Even with its pretty label, don’t ignore the wine inside the bottle. Every year, prized grapes from Napa Valley are selected to produce a wine that has gained many accolades. The 2010 vintage was rated 87 points by Wine Enthusiast.

Now that the 2011 vintage has been released, we find Marilyn sitting and wearing a green, low-cut blouse, short black skirt and timeless fishnet stockings. The wine itself is 100 percent merlot and has aromas of ripe strawberries and cherries with tastes of thyme and lavender, which complement the oak components of vanilla and smoke from the wood.

H o p s : you’ve heard of ‘em. But what are they? And why do you not like them?

I’m a hop-head to the core, so I don’t understand why people say they don’t like hoppy beers. I’ll concede this fact though: they may be an acquired taste.

Hops are the flowers of the Humu-lus Lupulus vine, and they contain different compounds that contribute to the flavor and stability of the beer. Modern beer requires hops. They serve to contrast the sweetness of the malts. Hops add a range of flavors, such as floral, citrus or pine, while always contributing to the bitterness, which is measured in International Bittering Units, or IBUs. A beer with-out hops would be like Coke without the spiciness: overly sweet and kinda bland.

Grandman Triathlon

celebrates a clean, safe Mobile Bay

For the 10th year, Mobile Baykeep-er is hosting a one-of-a-kind triathlon that includes a swim in Mobile Bay.

Racers begin by jumping off the Fairhope pier straight out into Mo-bile Bay and swimming a third of a mile alongside the Fairhope Pier. After the swim, they immediately bike 18 miles throughout the city of Fairhope across grueling hills and finish the race sprinting a 5K along-side Mobile Bay.

“What’s so unique about this tri-athlon is that racers get to jump off of the pier and swim in open water,” said Casi Callaway, Mobile Baykeep-er Executive Director and Grandman

race director. “Safeguarding Mobile Bay for swimmers of all ages is what we do everyday at Mobile Baykeeper, so this race is very important to us.”

Racers can register online at The-Grandman.com. To volunteer for the Grandman, contact Volunteer Direc-tor Laura Byrne at [email protected]. Volunteers are needed on May 15 and 16 for packet stuffing and on May 30 and 31 for race setup, body marking, traffic control, water stations, the awards ceremony and the post-race party.
