Guided Reading is a small group structure used to support students’ reading of instructional level texts. In
guided reading the teacher pulls together a group of readers who read at the same level with, ideally, the
same types of needs. He or she carefully selects a text at their instructional level (one that can be read with 90
to 95 percent accuracy, or one where fluency or comprehension is less than secure).

Parts of Guided Reading
The teacher will need to plan a text introduction that helps to activate prior knowledge, supports students with text
structure, introduce key vocabulary words, and set an intention for reading.
(Before) Book Text Introduction
Students read independently, whisper reading at lower levels. The teacher makes her way around to
each student and listens to the students read. During times of challenge the teacher offers
supportive prompts and questions. When the student overcomes a challenge, the teacher may
compliment by naming what the student has done.
(During) Reading With Coaching
After all children have read the selected text at least once, the teacher will call the
students back together to offer a teaching point based on her observations and/or will engage the children in a discussion about
the text.
