Application of ANT-20E SDH tester in DWDM

In the wavelength division system test, SDH tester is used for the following test items for STM-16 interfaces: input jitter tolerance of OTU board, output jitter, jitter transfer function and the 24 hr error code test that finally judges the transfer performance, etc. This article is to introduce the application of the instrument in the test.

Description of ANT-20E SDH tester

ANT-20E is a SDH tester based on computer operation produced by WG Company of Germany. After powering up, the Windows operating system run first. As the executive file of the ANT-20E SDH tester is put in the starting entry of the operating system, run the executive file when the initialization of the operating system finishes. The test items of ANT-20E SDH tester can be set through keyboard and mouse. The test results can be saved, printed or transferred to the computer via network.

There are electrical and optical interfaces on the ANT-20E SDH tester, so the interface signal rate to be tested is from T1 signal to STM-16 optical signal. The electrical interface can be set to test in ADM mode, while the optical interface can only test in TM mode. The test functions include interface index and function tests as output jitter, jitter tolerance, jitter transfer function, output interface AIS rate, output interface allowed frequency offset, jitter wonder characteristic, combined jitter, mapping jitter and error code performance. The operation of ANT-20E SDH tester is described as follows, focusing on the setting and test of STM-16.

Operation instruction of ANT-20E SDH tester

Setting of test time

After the ANT-20E is started, select the appropriate option in the Measurement submenu of the main menu to set the starting and stopping time for the test. Manual mode or timing test may also be selected. Refer to Fig.4-1 below.

Select Measurement settings in the Measurement menu to set the test mode and the starting and stopping time. Refer to Fig. 4-2.

Manual is manual test mode. The starting and stopping operation is carried out via START and STOP manually. Timer is timed test mode. The test is carried out at the set time. When the timing finishes, the test is stopped automatically. Current Date option is for setting the current time. Gate Time is for setting test time. When the setting finishes, click option’OK' to save it.

1.2.2 Setting of transmitting and receiving data structure

With the setting of transmitting and receiving data structure of ANT-20E SDH tester, the appropriate interfaces of the tester is started for index and function.

After the ANT-20E is started, select main menu Instruments as shown in Fig. 4-3, or click on the appropriate shortcut option.

Select and click the Signal Structure submenu from the main menu. The data structure setting option appears as shown in Fig. 4-4.

Click on shortcut , signal structure setting option appears as shown in Fig.

4-5.

Setting procedure: Click option 'Clear' to clear the last setting. Click option 'TX' to make the appropriate setting according to the rate of the signal to be tested. Then click option 'TX=>RX' to make the transmitting and receiving of SDH tester the same. The TX and RX can be set respectively according to different transmitting and receiving rates. E.g., the procedure for setting of data structure for error test of TWC is: click option 'TX'--->select 'ITU-T' --->select 'Optical' --->select 'STM-16' --->select 'AU4'--->select 'VC4' --->select '140M' --->select 'Uniform' --->select 'PRBS23' --->select 'TX=>RX' --->select 'OK' to finish the setting of transmitting and receiving signal of SDH tester.

1.2.3 Setting of output jitter test

When the setting of transmitting and receiving data structure finishes, click shortcut 'JIT' from the main menu to test the jitter performance, including tests of output jitter, input jitter tolerance and jitter transfer function

1. Output jitter setting

Click shortcut 'JIT', the following appears as shown in Fig. 4-6.

Output jitter, jitter tolerance and jitter transfer function test can be carried out via different selections from this interface.

in Fig. 4-6 is output jitter test mode. Set option RX: Range for receiving

range of jitter. There are two kinds, 2UI and 32UI. 2UI is selected for output jitter test. Option LP is the value of low pass filter. 20MHz is selected for output jitter test of STM-16 signal. Option HP is the value of high pass filter. There are two choices for HP value when testing the output jitter of STM-16 signal: 5kHz for testing B1 output jitter, and 1MHz for testing B2 output jitter.

As to the two options of , one is to display digital value and the other

graphic value.

2. Jitter tolerance test

Click either one of the two options in Fig. 4-6 to enter the jitter

tolerance test. FMTJ is fast test and MTJ is normal speed test. The number of

frequency points of fast test is less than that of normal speed test. Click to display the following as shown in Fig.4.7.

The kind of error codes to be tested is set as TSE or B1 or B2. Usually B1, B2 or TSE are selected. Usually one limit value is also set. Then the appropriate

time is set. When the setting finishes, click option to start auto test. When the test finishes, the tester will stop the test automatically.

As to the two options of , one is to display digital value and the other

graphic value.

3. Jitter transfer function test

Click option as shown in Fig.4-6 for the jitter transfer function test. The

following interface appears as shown in Fig.4-8.

Set option RX: Range for receiving jitter range. There are two choices, 2UI and

32UI. Usually 32UI is selected. Set the time. Click option to start

the test. Prompt dialogue box will appear, 'Transceiver self-loop calibration testing'. The transceiver self-loop of the tester is carried out through optical fiber and attenuator. Then click option 'OK'. When the calibration test finishes, there will be prompt of connecting equipment to be tested. The self-loop is disconnected and the equipment is connected. Click option 'OK' again to begin the jitter transfer function test.

1.2.4 Setting of error code performance test

When ANT-20E starts, the interface appears as shown in Fig. 4-9.

Click option to enter the error code test interface as shown in Fig. 4-10.

With different settings, there are various display modes of test results such as graphs or digits. The SDH tester is set to test some kinds of error codes only. The usual setting is full 'ALL' status.

1.2.5 Others

The above test is for DWDM. The operation of ANT-20E SDH tester is briefly described. The tester has other test functions, such as combined jitter test, mapping jitter test, clock wonder tolerance test, which are not described one by one here.

If there start few relatively test functions when ANT-20E SDH tester is started, select the Instruments menu from the main menu as shown in Fig.4-9. Click Add&Remove submenu, the interface as shown in Fig. 4-11 appears.

Click button 'Add' and 'Remove' to increase or decrease the test functions of ANT-20E SDH tester.

There are usually two types of laser for ANT-20E SDH tester. One is 1550nm laser and the other is 1310nm. If you only select one when ordering, there will be only one type of laser. Click 'Laser' menu as shown in Fig.4-4 to open and shut down the laser. Click ' Interface' menu and then 'Settings' as shown in Fig.4-4 to set the open and shut down of TX, RX and laser, and the type of laser.

Keyboard lock mode can be set to avoid misoperation as pressing the keys and mouse at will, which will lead to incorrect tester results during the long error code test procedure. In this way, the normal operation of the tester will not be affected by pressing the keys and mouse at will. The setting procedure is: Click menu 'Configure' and then option 'Keyboardlock' as shown in Fig.4-9. Then click 'OK' as prompt. Now the keyboard and the mouse do not function. Do remember the keys to unlock. Press 'Ctrl', 'TAB' and 'ESC' together to resume the function of the keyboard and the mouse.

The start and stop of ANT-20E SDH tester is carried out either by clicking in Fig.4-9, or by pressing 'START' and 'STOP' buttons on the panel.
