Special Collection Chil 01.1 File Description Detail BAJA CALIFORNIA

An Archive of Clippings from La Voz de la

Frontera (Mexicali), 1967 to 1977

Organized by Ronald H. Chilcote with Cis LeRoy and Sheryl Lutjens This project really began

in 1968 when I was able to introduce a class of thirty students to the politics of Mexicali, Baja

California. The course focused on Mexicali and Calexico. A great deal of information was

gathered and studied, including acquisition of the principal newspapers of the area. Jesus Blanc

Ornela,s, at the time editor of La Voz, provided us with a complimentary copy of this newspaper,

founded in 1967. Eventually these copies were filmed and current issues continue to be filmed

by Custom Microfilm Service as part of the materials in the series promoted by Latin American

Perspectives. Charles Ornelas was particularly helpful in coordinating the 1968 project. In 1974

another group of undergraduate and graduate students ventured to Mexicali to conduct

interviews with officials, educators, students, and leaders; these were recorded on videotape and

are held at the University of California, Riverside (an index of these holdings is available from

me at the address below). This project was supported by a University of California Innovative

Teaching Grant. In addition to the videotaping, students examined La Voz, marked articles, and

undertook some clipping. Cis LeRoy coordinated the newspaper work, while Ross Walker led

four or five field trips to Mexicali.

Most of the materials were marked and clipped during the past two years. Frances Chilcote and

3yong-Moo Hwang ably assisted in this phase. Finally, Sheryl Lutjens organized the archive into

subject files and the index of topics, which follows. A tremendous effort was given to this

project by all these persons and many others. La Voz has assisted several University of

Box #: Special Related 01 Name: Saul Landau papers (Collection 015)

DESCRIPTION: A detailed 25-page description (17 pages in Chilcote listings) identifies film

material produced by Saul Landau during a career of documentary film making and writing,

mostly on Latin America. The portion on Cuba is particularly rich. The material comprises 8

and 16 mm film, 1 inch master tapes, mini-DVDs, Mini DAT, VHS, Beta, audio and other

formats. Paper material includes personal papers, Cuba files, Middle East files, Pacifica Radio

transcripts, and manuscript articles.

Landau studied under C. Wright Mills and peripherally was associated with Hispanic American

Studies at Stanford in the early 1960s and with the journal Latin American Perspectives. He was

an Associate of the Policy Institute in London and a professor at California State University,

Pomona. Occasionally he has given talks at UCR.

BOX #: Special Related 02 Name: Lois Oppenheim Archive

Description:

Lois Oppenheim has graciously joined the UCR Special Collections with books and materials on

Chile. She also donated substantially to the Latin American Perspectives Fellowship

Endowment. Her collection evolves from her research in Chile during the Allende regime of

1071-1973 and the period of his overthrow where she experienced difficulty escaping the

military regime with her research intact. Here is how she describes the experience along with a

dedication to her parents:

I went to Chile for the first time in 9/'72 in order to do dissertation research on the Allende

124

government, and I was there until January of '74. As you might imagine, I had tremendous

difficulties after the coup getting out my research materials, books, newspapers, etc. It was only

through the intervention of my mother (good Jewish mother that she was!) that I was successful.

She put pressure on the State Dept through her then Senator, Jake Javits, and the consulate

finally agreed to help me by sending out all of my materials through the diplomatic pouch.

Before this, I hadn't even been able to get past the Chilean secretary to speak to anyone! (BTW,

Peter Winn was down there then, too, with his research on the Yarur factory workers, and, after I

told him what I had done, he also pressed the consulate to help him, too ...just an interesting

historical factoid).

Because of my personal experiences in Chile, my parents, who were good old-fashioned liberals

to begin with and internationalists in outlook, were further politicized and became quite

knowledgeable about Chile. They both died four years ago, and I was thinking that perhaps the

Chile part of the UCR special Latin American collection (or just my materials, if you prefer)

might be named in their honor. I might not have had any of the materials from the Allende years

to donate to you without my mother's assistance, and both my parents were staunch

internationalists and political activists throughout their lives. I think it would be a fitting gesture

to honor their lives

Box #: Special Related 03 Name: Bobbye Ortiz collection on Latin America (Collection 319)

DESCRIPTION:

The donor Hobart Spalding wrote:

―Before she died, Bobbye Ortiz, then Associate Editor of Monthly Review, left these materials,

mostly on Chile. She had collected them primarily during the Allende years and in the aftermath

of the coup. She asked that they be housed in a safe place where progressive scholars would be

able to use them freely. I promised her that I would fulfill her wishes. Over the years, several

potential donees surfaced but none, in the final analysis, fulfilled all the conditions stipulated in

my promise to Bobbye. Hopefully the Riverside LAP/Chilcote archive will do this.

As far as any acknowledgement perhaps a bookplate saying:In Memory of Bobbye S. Ortiz:

Feminist, Socialist, Revolutionary.‖
