To work in the library during lesson times or registration you need permission and a pass from
your teacher or tutor
Sometimes the library is closed for meetings, exams etc,
So before you go in. . . CHECK the sign on the door!
Books in the library are generally fiction/stories or non-fiction/nformation.
There is a main non-fiction section where most of the subject information books are.
These books are arranged in number order. Each subject has its own ‘class’ or ‘Dewey’ number and these books are organised on the shelves by their class number ranging from 0 to 999. Eclipse.net is the library software programme that can help you find what you need. There is a main ‘reference’ section including dictionaries, encyclopaedias etc. These books are also in number order. Other non-fiction sections include ‘local studies’, ‘biographies’ and Key Stage 3 & 4 ‘issues’. There is also a separate ‘careers’ area to help you with decisions about your future when you leave MHS. Fiction (story) books are in many sections in the library. The main ones are ‘junior fiction & stories for older readers’, ‘young adult’ and ‘adult fiction’. Others include ‘graphic novels’, ‘short stories’, ‘large print’ and ‘quick reads’.
There is a large section for the Accelerated Reader scheme.
This section includes fiction and non-fiction books which are arranged in book level order, ranging from 0 to 15.
All library resources and information can be viewed on all school networked computers via the Eclipse.net library software. Please ask permission to use the computers in the library outside of lessons. They are for school work, research or homework - not for playing games etc unless you are given permission. The school operates an “Acceptable Use Policy” for using the Internet and school network. You and your parents will be expected to sign and return this.
Library pages are available in Internet Explorer only, and Accelerated Reader can be accessed via Internet Explorer or Google Chrome.
Audio-books are books on CDs or to download. You can borrow audio-books from the library for one week. A few examples of current titles are “James and the Giant Peach”, “Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.
There are also some DVDs available to borrow in the library. You can borrow these for one week at a time (the same as audio-books). Current titles include “Holes”, “Macbeth” and “Alice in Wonderland” .
*Please be aware that fines are charged for all overdue
items, including DVDs and audio-books.
Remember - the audio-books, as well as ALL the resources in the library,
should be treated with care and returned on time to enable others to
use them. *See the note about fines further on.
Your school library has a range of daily newspapers available. There are also magazines, puzzle books, sets of encyclopaedias, foreign language dictionaries, books of quotations and many more useful resources.
Library news and information is available on Eclipse.net, the library software, and the school website. There is also a suggestion box for your ideas.
Look out for special events, themes and promotions in your library.

Year 7 pupils are unable to borrow Young Adult books unless they bring in written permission from their parents/guardians - see the librarian for details & a letter to get signed. There are also a few items which can only be issued to UPPER
school pupils and staff - please be aware of this.
During lesson times, your teacher may book your whole class into the library or may send individual pupils to work in the library. If you are sent to work in the library during lesson times you will need an official pass or written permission from your teacher. Here is an example:
Whether you need to research for homework or choose a book to read for your leisure,
you are very welcome in the library. The library is open to everyone providing they follow the library code of conduct.
The code of conduct is displayed all round the library and in this information booklet. If you cannot follow the code of conduct in the library, and you disrupt the work and pleasure of others, you will not be able to stay!
YES, THAT MEANS YOU !

CODE OF CONDUCT
PLEASE REMEMBER when you use the library: 1. THE BOOKS ARE IN ORDER SO PLEASE KEEP THEM THAT WAY - books taken off the shelf can be left on the returns trolley but borrowed items must be returned to the
desk. 2. Food and drink should not be consumed in the library. 3. Sensible behaviour is expected. 4. Speaking quietly enables others to read or work. 5. Taking care with the furniture ensures a pleasant environment. 6. Books need careful handling or they fall apart. Be
careful with food and drink in your bag, too. 7. Politeness to staff and each other is expected. 8. Books need to be returned on time to enable others to use them. 9. Bags and coats should be left in the foyer. 10. If moved, chairs and tables need to be put back.
Now you should have some idea of how to use YOUR school’s library.
Remember, the more you use it, the better you will be at finding things..........AND......... IF YOU ARE UNSURE OF ANYTHING....
JUST ASK!
Please REMEMBER, most items in the library are in some sort of order and need to be kept in the right place. If you just pick something off the shelf to look at and don’t want to borrow it, please leave it on the returns trolley next to the issue desk so it can be put back in the correct place.
Ask how to view the ‘floor plan’ (see overleaf) in Eclipse.net to see where every single item is in the library-
