Welcome

Welcome to the fourth annual Health and Wellness Expo for Howard County Public School System employees, retirees, and their families. The event this year has more to offer than ever, with numerous screenings, workshops, demos, and health and wellness information. The Health and Wellness Expo is a dynamic event that emphasizes the importance of the health and well-being of each staff member. The expo helps reach the goals of our employee wellness program and is aligned with our commitment to community health. We are fortunate this year to feature a very special keynote speaker. Dr. Majid Fotuhi is an internationally recognized neurologist and expert on memory and Alzheimer’s disease. Fotuhi is a frequent contributor on CNN, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and other major media outlets. I extend my thanks to the expo planning team, exhibitors, presenters, sponsors, and other supporters for their hard work in making this important event happen. I encourage everyone to take full advantage of the activities and resources on hand today. I know you will be motivated to try something new and take your health and fitness to a new level.

Enjoy the Health & Wellness Expo!

Renee A. Foose, Ed.D.Superintendent

Workshop Descriptions

11:00 AM

“Heart Disease in Women” – St. Agnes - Seton Medical GroupHeart disease is the number one killer of women in this country. Learn how to address its risk factors, warning signs, and ways to prevent coronary disease.

“Hands Only CPR” – Howard County Fire & Rescue (Source – American Heart Association Fact Sheet)

WHY LEARN HANDS-ONLY CPR? Cardiac arrest – an electrical malfunction in the heart that causes an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) and disrupts the flow of blood to the brain, lungs and other organs - is a leading cause of death. Each year, over 420,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States.

• When a person has a cardiac arrest, survival depends on immediately getting CPR from someone nearby.

• According to the American Heart Association, 90 percent of people who suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests die. CPR, especially if performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival.

• Most Americans (70 percent) feel helpless to act during a cardiac emergency because they don’t know how to administer CPR or they’re afraid of hurting the victim.

BE THE DIFFERENCE FOR SOMEONE YOU LOVE If you are called on to give CPR in an emergency, you will most likely be trying to save the life of someone you love: a child, a spouse, a parent or a friend.

• 80 percent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in private or residential settings.

• Unfortunately, only 41 percent of people who experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest get the immediate help that they need before professional help arrives.

• Hands-Only CPR has been shown to be as effective as conventional CPR for sudden cardiac arrest at home, at work or in public. It can double or even triple a victim’s chance of survival.
