Biography - Historical Note

March 1958 Report to the Alumni (v.9, no.3):

"Charles Norris enters private work" "The University of Oregon Medical School's first full-timephotographer Charles F. Norris, 51, resigned this month to enter private business. An early pioneer inmedical photography, 'Charlie' was well known by a host of faculty members and students at the UOMSsince he first stepped on the campus in September 1931.... In 1940, Charlie married the former ThelmaLehman, secretary to Elnora Thompson.... For a number of years, the Norris' have conducted a limitedretail nursery business in Portland, specializing in rhododendrons, azaleas, and native plants. They plan toenlarge the business and devote full time to it."

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of photographs of the University of Oregon Medical School, taken by CharlesF. Norris. It includes photographs of administrators, doctors, students and staff, physical plant workers,nurses, technicians, landscapers, architects and others. Also included are group pictures such as classphotographs and groups in formal and informal settings. There are photographs showing the constructionof the Library Building in 1939 and the construction of other buildings on campus. Accompanyingthese photographs is a brochure of the dedication of the Library and Auditorium, June 7, 1940. Insertedbetween pages 44 and 45 is a letter from Dr. Dillehunt to Dr. Josephi dated 1911. The materials datefrom ca. 1915[?] - ca.1960. The photographs were originally arranged in a scrapbook. During processingthe photographs were photocopied on the original pages to preserve the original order. The photographscould not be removed from the pages due to the glue and arrangement of the photographs. The pages wereremoved from the scrapbook, labeled, sleeved and then stored in acid-free boxes.
