Collection summary: These files represent the research conducted to nominate particular geographic areas or buildings for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places, under the National Historic Preservation Act.

Organizational history: Passage of the Alaska Historic Preservation Act (AS 41.35) in 1970 led to the creation of the Office of History and Archaeology within the Dept. of Natural Resources whose staff of historians, archaeologists and architectural historians carry out a mission to identify, document, restore and preserve Alaska’s historic buildings and geographic sites and educate the public about their existence and value.

Collection description: These files document research conducted to nominate prehistoric or historic geographic sites or structures to the National Register of Historic Places. Nominations are reviewed by the State Historic Preservation Office and the Alaska Historical Commission. If accepted, the project is forwarded to the Keeper of the National Register (National Park Service) for final review. Information may include applications, reports, surveys, photographs, maps, charts, nominations. Project research varies from 2-3 pages to over 100. The records are divided into four categories:

3330-5: Properties designated National Historic Landmarks (also listed in the National Register of Historic Places);
